I was always curious how we discover if some animals are colorblind or not. I like to think that some random zoologist points a microphone to an animal and ask him: "Are you colorblind?" And then the immediate response is: "Dafuq is a color?"
@hydrogencyanide49996 жыл бұрын
I also thought the same once, but then I learnt that color vision is enabled by the rod and cone cells in the eye. If an animal doesn't have them, they are colorblind.
@williamwatson97816 жыл бұрын
i wonder if the arms having a lot of nervous cells has anything to do with it. It would be cool if the cells in its arms could detect color and transmit the color information to surrounding cells.

William Watson u seem smart, does that explain why chickens can still run even after they get their heads chopped off?
@williamwatson97816 жыл бұрын
its that the spinal cord of a chicken also stores basic responses like the brain does in a chicken. So even tho the head is removed the spinal cord is sending out signals to make the chicken run. I believe this is the reason why if I remember correctly.

So if 2/3 of the neurons are in the arms and the arms can fall off, does that mean octopuses can forget things that way? The memories don't grow back.
@crylec65348 жыл бұрын
whoa
@hjdenison8 жыл бұрын
Memories are stored in a part of the your brain. The nervous system is just a series of wires that carry signals from the brain to different body parts telling them what to do. They also send signals back to the brain so you know you're touching something. That's why if your nerve endings die in a body part that body part goes numb.
@TheProtronic8 жыл бұрын
+Henry Denison I heard octopuses have decentralized nervous systems, with parts of the brain in the arm, like some office network hub. Wouldn't that explain why something with a tiny donut-shaped brain circling its esophagus can control its organ functions, all eight arms, and still have intelligence enough to outperform many mammals?
@TheProtronic8 жыл бұрын

However, the word octopus comes from Greek and the Greek plural form octopodes is still occasionally used. The plural form octopi, formed according to rules for some Latin plurals, is incorrect".

Not that venom is incapable of being lethal if swallowed but the probability is improbable. Its more attainable to develop temporary illness like nausea, agitated stomach,head aches,etc. Venom is a evolved saliva gland and poison is a toxin usually formed in glands under the skin.

And some folks still insist that science like this is a waste of time! Imagine "unlocking" the technology of chromatophores for use in our everyday life. Imagine simply opening up your smartphone to choose the color of such things as your house, your car, or even your clothes. The applications aren't limited to aesthetics either: Think of the myriad military applications of such a technology. Someday a soldier may be able to change his camouflage patterns at will--or automatically--so that the soldier always remains hidden in his or her surroundings. We're already working on such technologies for military vehicles like tanks and ships; I'm very excited to see what the next generation of scientists can come up with!

YES LETS USE NATURE TO KILL It!!! Ur such a smart human!!! LETS send atombomb to... No one cares about life and global warming anyways!!! Yeyy
@barryretmanski47637 жыл бұрын
Twenty LoneWolf - I guess you didn't get the memo, "global warming" was downgraded to "climate change". Under either name it's a load of non-sense! Let me explain why, I'm sure you'll understand. Over the past million years there has been a warm period/ice age cycle going on roughly every 100,000 years. Okay? (Can link to proof if you want) I'm just pointing this out as a frame of reference and to illustrate the timescales we're talking about. Now, current climate science is based off data from merely the last 100 years! And most of that data is not very good! But even if it was the best data ever, 100 years on a timescale of 100,000 years is nothing! It would be like looking at a day of the week, and after opening your eyes and seeing the first few seconds making predictions what the rest of the day will be like. It just doesn't make any logical sense! As it happens we find ourselves at the peak of a warm period, and it's a good job we are because ice age is no fun! Btw there have even been warmer periods than now. A couple hundred thousand years ago if my memory is correct, possibly the cycle before that. It's like when a new medicine wants to hit the market, they don't just test it on one person and give it the all clear! That's not enough data to base any conclusions from. EDIT: Oh and to further illustrate my point, on a timescale of 100,000 years it's conceivable that the warm period could last 20,000 years! It's very possible that there will be relatively no change for 10,000 years! Lol... WTF is a poxy 100 years going to tell you? It's a drip in the ocean! EDIT2: I just wanted to point out that when I say relatively no change I am speaking in the context of the warm period/ice age cycle. There will be changes, a degree here or there, maybe 2 even... But relative to the entire cycle it's nothing! There could even be a dip such as the mini ice age we had in the 1600's. But relatively it's still statistically insignificant. My point is it's not a nice even curve over the cycle, there are peaks and dips throughout! So with all this in mind how on earth can they come to the conclusions that they have? At the very least they should admit that they don't have enough data! Even a thousand years is not enough! Lol So this 0.7 degree rise they keep blathering about is completely within normal limits, the max temp has not even broken any records from the last million years!
