This just reminded me that when my little sister was like 5 or 6 I used to watch her all the time and she was really difficult sometimes and once we were watching a giant squid documentary and she was like “is.. that real…” and i was like “yeah, but dont worry. He only drives up here to take kids down into the ocean if your *really* bad” and right then someone randomly pulled up to our house and knocked on our door and she was like “DONT LET THE SQUID GET ME. ILL BE GOOD. ILL BE GOOD I PROMISE” And for the next like 3ish years if I ever needed a break I would just take out my phone and start dialing “the giant squid”

There was a recent video release of a bigfin squid "attacking" an ROV. I use air quotes because it's hard to tell if it was just being blown around by the jets or if it was actually attacking, but consensus seems to be that it might have been self-defense after being startled. It seemed to be using its filaments like a coil-like whip to attack. This could maybe suggest that they're more active predators as opposed to just waiting for food to bump into them like how jellyfish feed, but we don't know for certain.

I actually haven't seen anything respectable say it was attacking anything. The main theories are a defensive maneuver to escape, or, the much more likely scenario, it was caught in a current.

I feel like another thing to mention when discussing the size of these animals is that it can be tricky to gauge size of things in the open ocean because there’s nothing to compare the size to, nor is there anything in the back to gauge how far away it is. If one happens to be spotted on chance there isn’t going to be the tools or intention needed to measure it

Cool video! The first time I saw that night vision footage I was like “Why do their tentacles jut out away from their body and then hang down??? Freaky” Now I know! The parts that hang down aren’t tentacles. Wonder what about the human psyche finds their vertical position so unsettling, though. They’re just vibing, why does it give me the willies? Edit: Thought my parents showed me the original video, apparently they didn’t so I showed it to them. My dad’s response was “That thing is what nightmares are made of” 😂

New subscriber here. I’d watched another of this channel’s videos before this - the siphonophore one - and when I saw the channel creator crediting an artist whose work had gone kinda viral sans credit, I knew I had to sub. That’s class, right there. Ensuring someone gets the credit they deserve when it would be easier to just forget about it and use the image uncredited. That’s class. As to what I would rename the squid? The Phantom Squid. They’re elusive, scary looking, hang out in the world’s flooded sub-basements, are vaguely menacing, and are very misunderstood. Sort of like the Phantom of the Opera. Phantom Squid.

The video of it dragging its... Oh shit i already forgot the name for the ends of its arms. Anyone that video if it dragging its "legs" across the bottom the ocean looked like that tom cruise alien invasion movie.

Spaghetti Squid is a sub-deity, akin to an angel, if you will, of our Lord and Savoury, the _Flying Spaghetti Monster,_ that is working in the depths of our oceans to spread the word of Pastafarianism to _all_ of His creatures. I thank the Pasta, the Sauce, and the Meatballs. rAmen (and pass the parmesan)!

"Weaver squid". I know they don't actually do anything that could be called "weaving" the way spiders do, but it's the most evocative name I can think of related to their most striking feature.

Actually, the magnapinna squids are hilarious. I mean look at them. They manage to get their terror spaghetti tangled and then? How do those reproduce when they can't even get their tentacles in a row?

Captured in the night-vision of a submarine's camera against the cold, silent gloom of the deep sea; the ghost like alien appearance of these H.P. Lovecraft like creatures is the stuff of nightmares... until their silly string arms get accidentally wrapped around something.

A name-change would seem entirely reasonable. After all it is done with some other common creatures. Here in Australia we are renowned for our Saltwater Crocodiles ('Salties'), a name used to distinguish them from the much smaller and less dangerous Freshwater Crocodiles ('Freshies'). However six years ago I discovered they had been renamed as the Indo-Pacific Crocodile, because they are found all through the Indian and Pacific oceans. But then just a few weeks ago I heard another statement that they are now named the Estuarine Crocodile, because of course, they live in river estuaries (where almost all of the human attacks and deaths occur, not at sea nor on our beaches). So renaming creatures is part of developing science.
