Hi. Can you check if the VR is using the eGPU or just the integrated GPU? Did you connect the USB to the Laptop or the eGPU adapter? I tried to do eGPU with my 980Ti and my x230T today and noticed in the Task Manager that the eGPU is completely 0% utilization and the CPU max out at 100%.

So I have an 2020 Dell XPS 15 laptop which some decent specs. I am a fulltime university student who is quite mobile therefore I prefer a laptop (wish I got one with a better GPU tbh). When I come home, I plug my laptop into my dockstation and use it as a regular desktop. In the past, I have tried to play Steam VR games using the USB-C port using the oculus cord, let's just say it didn't run very well. (It has a GTX 1650 gpu). So I figured I would try an eGPU while hooked up at home to improve overall PC gameplay as well as play Steam VR. I hear a lot about whether or not it's worth it to use/buy one.. so I considered using my old Alienware x51 from 2012 to save myself the money from buying an eGPU enclosure this way i could not only reach the full potential of the GPU but also save the money of buying an eGPU enclosure... Let's just say my new RTX 3060 Ti is WAYYY out of its league. I dont think it was really wasn't worth trying to upgrade/salvage it as it would nearly cost the same as a nice eGPU enclosure in the first place if not more! (Btw I'm trying to be as cheap as possible rn so building a new PC is out of the picture.) Besides, I use my laptop a lot and don't perfer swapping between 2 computers eveeytime I want to play a game. So that comes to my question: Would you recommend an eGPU given my situation? I have an Oculus Quest 2, an desktop RTX 3060 Ti GPU, and 2021 XPS 15 Laptop with Thunderbolt 3 support. Im hoping to get atleast 60 fps in both 1080p VR and 1440p PC games. Words of advice is also appreciated. 👌

You might prefer the T430 with either Coreboot or 1vyrain for this, as you will be able to upgrade to a quad-core CPU to bottleneck the GPU less, although it still will be bottlenecked.

Yes you should be able to drive even more with the extra gpu outputs

Although you can force it by disabling Intel graphics, it is not recommend as you will lose out on even more performance as there isnt enough bandwidth for the graphics data to travel from the laptop then back through the same limited connection

@@VRKommando well clearly but it's a 2005 - 2015 laptop so it wouldn't be able to run modern games but I even turned the resolution down, graphics, EVERYTHING even the Intel HD graphics 4000 is good enough for me

@Linus, The Quest doesn't need the Link cable anymore. It can play all games including Half Life Alyx flawlessly and wireless :) This external GPU stuff is interesting as you get better results with this old crappy thinkpad, than i do with a £4000 gaming laptop....... fml lol Simply because VR doesn't support sli grrr

The oculus app sucks to be honest. It has settings that just won’t turn off and is just all around a crappy experience. The warping is from asynchronous spacewarp to keep frames up but the problem is that it happens even if the FPS are still good like 60 or 70. I had to stop using the app because it sucked. I suggest you use virtual desktop if you have a quest
