Theoretical: The Ultramarines are overhyped poster boys of the setting. Practical: Their geneseed is stable, all of their implanted organs work, and they can adapt quickly when needed. They are on posters for good reason.

I absolutely get it from an in-universe perspective, but from an out-of-universe one I feel like the Blood Angels are a better choice. The Ultramarines are kind of your stock-standard non-trademarked space marines, whereas the Blood Angels are a good way of dipping your toe into the Grimdark.

Or even the Blood Angels keeping their humans in total poverty and paying no attention to them (Theyre nice to their slaves though) Not a big fan of Ultramarines...but its thr idea of hope that the realm of Ultramar brings....that despite the horror and constant war, life can be pretty good if you're fortunate enough to be born on a world like Macragge

Yeah it's kind of neat how in universe it helps explain why they're the poster boys: Had an entire empire of 500 worlds to draw recruits from during the GC Survived the Heresy with the most intact and largest standing Legion Primarch wrote the book that dictates 95% of chapter structure and organization Stands to reason that their Legion gets broken up into the most chapters Preexisting large numbers and stable geneseed means the majority tithe contributions and subsequent Foundings originate with the Ultramarines More Ultramarines successors means more Ultramarines geneseed tithes which ensures their primacy The cycle continues for 10k years and eventually something like a full third of existing chapters (at least) prior to the Indomitus Crusade means are freon a single stock

They can adapt, but I wouldn't say quickly. But I'd argue that's their strength too, Robot Guerilla Man learned during the strife after his adopted fathers murder that a level headed one step at a time approach was prudent in times of turmoil. When he acted rashly, blind with grief and rage there was so much wanton destruction that could have been avoided.

I love that picture of Guilliman, Magnus, the solar auxilia , the thousand suns and ultramarines all just hanging out. It's one of the few times we get to really see what we lost because of the heresy. (or at least the important stuff that was lost)

Now I kind of want to make an Ultramarines successor chapter that uses the '13' motif. "Triskadekamarines", perhaps? Or maybe the "Ill Omens" chapter. Something to that effect. ​@@johncherrybone4835 And they handle rebellions better than most of the Imperium. In the plague war book. Chapter master Calgar had to personally handle a mutiny of the local PDF within Ultramar. He and his men laid down suppressive fire and used concussion grenades to incapacitate the rebelling troops. And then he laid down the judgment, the leading officers would be executed, the troops would be sent to hard labour for a few months and extra military drills after that but no more punishment allowed. Has it been anywhere else, they'd all be executed.

I’d say the Astartes are on something of a sliding scale with this to me it goes Ultramarines, Imperial Fists, Raven Guard, Iron Hands, Dark Angels, Blood Angels, Salamanders, White Scars, Space Wolves. From consummate professionals to hooligans with Bolters and Chainswords

I love their f*ckery better than their official presentation. Like the fact they still retained their baneblades and such, despite superheavy armor being forbidden to the astartes chapters, since _technically_ the crews were Ultramar PDF not spacemarines or chapter serfs. Or like they split Ultramarines legion into boatload of chapters but retained such close a communication that it was still a legion in anything but name.

@@ArchArturo Salamanders here and my poor boys, the Lamenters. Ultrasmurfs are okay, though, even if they are a bit too stuck up for my taste. Oh, and I totally agree, although the Ultrasmurfs are less _inhumane_ than other loyalist chapters, they are not feeling exactly super humane as well.

The Ultramines are a Legion of Cyclopses (X-Men). They are professional to the point of lunacy. They are (by Astartes standards) excellent when it comes to suppressing emotions & looking at things from a tactical & strategic POV. They will be whatever the situation calls for be that brutal, cunning or sneaky but they will not be dishonourable. If you were looking for a Legion who'd be a good fit for defecting to the Tau (not that any would) the Ultramarines are your best bet.

I always felt that the Ultramarines were built to be soldiers, where other legions tended to be formed more as warriors if that makes sense. I actually really like the ultramarines for the contrast they provide to (some) of the other legions.

What you're hitting on here is the distinction between the two: for a soldier war is a job, a series of tasks and objectives to reckon with professionally and coolly if possible. For a warrior: war is simply a way of life, whether out of sheer necessity or cultural traditions or to defend/uphold some status or material title. A soldier may hope to distinguish civilian and military life, but for a warrior any lasting respite from warfare is not only unthinkable but bad for business...

This video has given me a new appreciation for the idea of a Lorgar-Guilliman rivalry. Beforehand, the rivalry seemed a touch random, but Oculus really touches on an element you can see in both primarchs - i.e. massive reformation of a planets infrastructure to their vision.

They were so impressed by Guilliman's restraint when realistically nobody could have stopped him that they would go on to promote Konor's dream of their own volition.

Captain Ventris knows when not to do things by the book, which he learned from his own predecessor, Captain Idaeus (who went on a solo mission to melta-bomb a bridge in heretic Astartes territory… Definitely not codex compliant). Heck, even the series’ Leandros figure, confusingly similarly called Learchus (and who also sold out Ventris for not abiding by the Codex) has a period of redemption where he engages in covert ops behind enemy lines and learns that rigidity in warfare can lead to disaster (shame that the book he learns that in is by far the worst of the series)

My dearest master chronicler, Greetings once again from the spires of Dub-hive. I pen my now customary correspondence to you from my humble scriptorium by the light of my flickering lumin after reviewing your latest report on these paragons of the divine Emperor's angels, the Ultramarines. I must say, this most honoured of chapters is a very popular subject of my students at the schola, as well as the citizens of our hive. As you rightly point out, the astartes of the 13th legion had been recruited from many diverse and, to be blunt intractable, populations of the Unification wars Terra. It may not be known in these days of glorious unity on our most Holy homeworld but the population of the Eir plateau were a people of stubborn tradition and uncompromising independence, traits that the castrum-holds of Old Albia struggled to cope with. It is said that the "Ironside" power armour, a precursor of the Mk1 power armour type famously used by the Emperor's Thunder Warriors, was developed to combat the "Gael" strike warriors of the Eir clan forts. With the coming of the Emperor's legions, the Eir clans, also known in Imperial records as the "Hoth-grendal", resisted compliance and were brought low swiftly by his most glorious forces, in the main his ever victorious Thunder Warriors, yet not completely. Unfortunately, much to the eternal shame of those of the Eir-district who are aware of the past, the clans were bruised, but not broken, and engaged in guerrilla warfare and vile terrorism against the Unification authorities. And so, at the behest of the Hive-Lords of Albia and those Eir clan chiefs that accepted the Emperor's divine and rightful rule, the youths of those reticent clans were inducted into the Warborn, later to be known as the Ultramarines. In this enlightened policy, our region became forever tied to this most glorious and honoured legion, later chapter and those recruited into this grand brotherhood kept the marshal customs and traditions of their origin. In fact, later, once the wise Primarch, Roboute Gilliman, divided the legion into chapters, several of them with ties back to Eir, brought forth these old traditions of the Gael warriors and the traditions older still, maintaining their ancient link back to the plateau from which they arose. Even today, at the Grand Emerald Basilica of Dub-hive, the ceremony of the Azur Shield reminds all the faithful throughout the hive of our proud connection to this legendary legion and the chapters that were raised from our soil. And so, my most esteemed master, I once again must give my most humble thanks for this comprehensive history, which resonates so completely throughout our hive, so much so the warcry of those worthy sons of Gilliman echoes throughtout our halls "We march for Macragge". That said, it hurt me deeply to hear such a gifted orator utter the word "hung" in place of the proper and appreciate term when referring to persons or any individual being executed via noose: that term being "hanged." Pictures can and may have been hung. Christmas ornaments can and may have been hung. Persons, however, cannot have been hung. They can only have been hanged. (Referring specifically to those persons or individuals having been asphyxiated about the neck via rope or rope like apertures.
