What I find hypocritical beyond measure is that EVERYBODY love Samurai and their Bushido code, while in 40K most hate Ultramarines and their Codex Astartes. Nonsense. Also, the Codex is basically a library, not a single tome, continously updated, and not a strict set of rules. Looks NO ONE ever understood the Ultramarines. NEVER.

It really is true, despite all the accolades of the Imperial Fists, of the sociopathic effectiveness of the Dark Angels, the Uktramarines have almost single handedly been the only chapter to actively withhold their original purpose as a Legion and almost single-handedly hold the Imperium together for 10000 years. It’s really stunning what they’ve been able to accomplish while also being the most vanilla characters in 40k.

My favorite thing about the Ultramarines is that they’re Space Marine politicians who actually try to improve society by governing the planets under their control and improve the quality of life for the citizens of Ultramar. Of course there are a number of problems with their approach which gets brought up quite a bit in the Ultramarine books but the fact that they never really stop trying is a huge draw for me. It also helps that I always love a bit of politics in my sci fi.
@KevinJohnson-cv2no

I wish the ambition of the legion was expanded upon more. IMO, there should be *FAR MORE* Cato Sicarius type personalities in the legion. As far as I see it, the Ultramarines can express themselves in one of two ways; either the hyper-dutiful, by the book warrior who stringently monitors all aspects of the campaign to make sure things are going according to plan, OR the hyper-ambitious, glory-seeking warrior who wants to speedily rise up the ranks, climb the ladder of ascension to the top & rack up great feats/achievements along the way. Most Ultramarines are somewhere in-between, but we see characters like Leandros or Sicarius which embody the archetypes fully. This also goes hand-in-hand with the fact that I think their political aspirations should be expanded upon. We should see Ultramarines greatly anticipating being given a governorship in exchange for a victory on the battlefield, we should see tyrannical Ultramarines, etc. This would actually be a good way of making Ultramarine villains; their gene-seed is too pure for them to realistically be corrupted by chaos, but an Ultramarine going overboard in enacting *HIS WAY* unto his territories is very believable.

The Ultramarines were examples of what the Space Marines could have become after the Great Crusade as both Governors or Administration, and were one of the few of both the only of the Legions to look beyond of the Emperor Great Crusade. They were the one of the most expertly used Legions during the Great Crusade and with their Primarch they brought many worlds intact into the Imperium, and create the Codex for the rest of the Space Marines Forces by using the Ultramarines experience they gain in both the Great Crusade and Horus Heresy and any Theoretical situation that a Chapter may face in their endless wars.

The thing is Horus acknowledged that some Legions were more fit in the post crusade imperiun than others. One of the biggest factors in his decision to turn was that Sons of Horus/Luna Wolves were legion filled with warriors and berserkers that were not well suited for peacetime. Like big e he often compared Astartes to Guilliman and his sons. Iron Hands and Ferrus did that too. Horus had the crucial worry that some legions unsuitable for peace would be purged before Erebus showed the forged vision.

Here's a fun fact: A imperial fist successor chapter went on a crusade and conquered many worlds but when they asked the Imperium if they can govern those worlds they were denied. So to smooth things up Imperium sended a imperial fist chaplain, chaplain had a talk and the marines from the successor chapter claimed they have lost many brothers conquering these worlds for the Imperium and that they had the right to govern them. So yea uhh that chaplain went on ham on those Marines and we do not know if they still exist or not or just chaplain became a doom slayer. Story is called Irixa.

@@7F0X7 I mean the Ultramarines had more soldiers than any legion after the war, so most of the fighting force would be ultramarines. When most of your forces come from one source it's best to base your rules around the majority.
@Catonzo
@Catonzo Жыл бұрын
@@7F0X7 In the same way it greatly diminishes the Ultramarines overall power. They were to break up the strongest, largest Chapter. The one Chapter that probably rivaled multiple despite taking the biggest losses overall (not relatively speaking, just objective numbers). Every single successor chapter is ultimately going to respond favorably to their Primarch's orders. You cannot make be believe that a successor chapter of the Imperial Fists would ever take orders from Guilliman over Dorn. In Dorn's absence, yes.. but not if he had been present. Thus the breaking of the Chapters is but a way to keep each separate and to not conspire and this INCLUDES the Ultramarine chapters. Despite still being the largest group with an imperium of their own, for millennia the Ultramarines showed themselves to be the most adherent to their own rules even to their own detriment. I think you forget how much they have lost when they COULD have ruled the entire Imperium had they desired to do so. The Codex Astartes hurts them far more than it ever did others when taking into account what they *COULD* have been had they not adhered to such rules. The Black Templars are the ones who do not follow the Codex Astartes and they are easily one of the biggest disappointments of Guilliman. Do you believe any of the Primarchs, Dorn included, would actually like what they have become? They were Champions of the Imperium, but are now just beefed up zealots. I still think they are cool by design as I love Templars, Paladins and Crusader in fantasy design. However they do bring down unrighteous zeal upon undeserving citizens that are very loyal just because of their perceived "Emperor's perfection" which cannot be improved upon lest you are a Heretic. They are something born out of what made the Imperium the stagnated hellhole that it is. If it is a "well accepted fact" within the WH40k community that Guilliman wrote it to give Ultramarines an advantage/edge I am convinced that few in the community seem to be aware of the enormous loss of power, EVEN if he can call upon any successor chapter at any time, that this was for him. A unified, cohesive army is vastly, IMMEASURABLY more powerful as one than it would be splintered into dozens of small ones. He knee capped himself for the sake of avoiding new conspirators simply because Space Marines were proven to indeed be flawed like humans... if not more so. Just good at shooty stabby. Basically.. given the potential power of the unified Ultramarines, the Codex Astartes hurts them far, far more than any. It divides them from being an Imperium conquering force, into ones that actually develop their own loyalties as well. Hell.. some even having fallen to Chaos (though very few).. something unthinkable as unified Ultramarines.

I don’t know how any one who actually read the Lore (and didn’t just listen to influencers or the community) can think any of the Primark’s come close to G-man as a total package. I keep hearing ignorant comments that his superpower is taxes or logistics… His superpower is an AI level brain that allows him to master anything at superhuman speeds that even Shame Primarchs. This means he is the second best at every category in the galaxy and if you do not kill, cripple, or otherwise incapacitate him in your first move, he beats everyone. He adapted faster than the hive fleets and is the only one to do so. He adapted to Morts poison then burnt Nurgs garden. He adapted to demon Magnus and his warp sorcery and command style and retook the overran planet in a week after waking up from a 10,000 year old coma. His body adapted to the demon blade after 10,000 years. He has now adapted to dying, and all the evidence points to him being a perpetual now. Once you become a physical specimen, like the Primark’s, and you have a perfect nervous system, and can lift a semi over your head, the one thing that separates you is your brain…. G-man has the best brain in the galaxy. His ultra marines are by far the most adaptive. Without them, the imperium does not exist. Their greatest strength is the ability to reinforce any other chapter or legion seamlessly… there’s a reason why the prime Aris marines can come off the factory line and replace any space marines vacancy. You lost too many imperial fists and need some expert defenders? Teacher primaries ultramarine in a day. You need a secretive, paranoid, demon, hunter in the dark angels? Primaries ultramarine can fill-in. They adapt just like G-man. And what is war, if not rapidly adapting encountering your enemies movement?

However, I love that unlike Horus, Guilliman knew the wars would end and was smartly preparing his Astartes for lives of service and governance. I love that he joked with them, laughed and had camaraderie with his troops. The 500 worlds of Ultramar where normal citizens were happy and prosperous and the worlds were green and lush. The Ultramarines were the epitome of awesomeness until the heresy. So, all that being said, I was debating which loyalist legion to build an army. I think it has to be the Ultramarines!

The Ultramarines often take a lot of shit. I never understood that. They're a facinateing chapter and i love the roman aesthetic. Not my personal favorite but will always hold a special place in my heart. They were the first Astartes i ever saw in the local hobby shop some 20+ yrs ago. Always in my top 4.

There are a few issues most of which come from how the chapter was handled rather than the Ultramarines themselves. The first and still ongoing would be fatigue ... the Ultramrines are GW poster boys so 9 out of 10 space marines are presented as the boys in blue ... and many people are a bit tired of it. would love to see more variety in the official boxes and such. The second is based on their handling during the infamous Ward era .. they were kinda made into almost mary sue like chapter, with characters like Cato Sicarius gaining infamy .... and some statements in the codex Space Marine only fueled the anger towards the chapter with both gaining meme status by this point That said most of the issues with them were by now fixed ... Cato has become a much better character ... the chapter is written a bit more balanced through they still do have a bit of a main character syndrome in the eyes of many Its mainly the poster boy status at this point that keeps the meme hate going . ..

@Ower8x I agree! All very valid points! I guess what I mean to say is that I'm surprised more people can't see past these things. That is to say, the merchandising on a box and the occasional bad writing. I think who they are at their core deserves a least a bit more respect in spite of these things. Again, I'm not an ultramarines player. I've just always found them to be something special and have a unique place in this vast setting.

@@G.SPIES24 Well I am a newer 40k fan so its hard for me to fully empathize, but I can imagine that spending years with things like "Every chapter wishes they could be Ultramarines" or "Calgar is the defacto spiritual leader of all the SM" and moments like literally choking an Avatar of Kain etc ... could drive the bitterness quite deep ...

The codex astartes is a set of guidelines, to be followed loosely and interpreted differently by each chapter, it wasn’t written as a las by guilliman. The only law drafted with the codex was that primarchs wouldn’t be allowed to hold sway over the entirety of their legion until the imperium needed them the most. At least that’s how i see it

One of my favorite stories is definitely the battle between Guilliman and Magnus on Luna base. Roboute had to band together his Ultra marines, Skitarii, Sisters of Silence, Gray Knights, and even a group of Eldar Harlequin. To fight back Magnus, his chaos marines, and chaos daemons from pouring outa the web way. Right when it felt as though Magnus' forces were about to break through Roboute's defenses. Chapters of Custodes arrived to reinforce the loyalists. This gave them a much needed second wind, and allowed Roboute to focus is strength against Magnus. Even with Magnus' unparalleled psychic power. Roboute was able to power forward and strike down Mangus and push him back through the web way portal, while the rest of the chaos forces were slaughtered by the gray knights.

The best part was they landed on the moon because Magnus wanted to trick Gulliman to open a portal on Terra but Gulliman immediately figured out his intention and opened the portal on the moon instead, just far enough to prevent Magnus from invading the throne world but close enough for the custodes and SoS to immediately detect the teleportation signal and join the fight because even Gulliman knows he couldn't beat Magnus without the SoS and the custodes. I'm convinced that had Gulliman been on the traitor side he'd be a worthy Champion of Tzeench.

Great video although i will say Sanguinius is who Horus declared should have been Warmaster on his deathbed. Also the Lion had the most Military victories with Guilliman having the most worlds brought to compliance and Horus having the most campaigns completed.

I always used to pass off the Blue Boys as a bit generic, boring and too vanilla. However after watching lore videos like this and that about Guileman directly, and other notable stories and figures I actually think they are a good chapter. The closest to the Emporors vision and ideals, and in this grim dark universe, the Imperium needs this beacon of light provided by Ultramar to keep itself from becoming synonymous with the traitor regimes of their Chaos counterparts. Ultramar is what the Imperium should and could have been if not left to decay by Emperors demise. For Guileman and Mcgrague and for the Emperor they strike with the wrath of the righteous.
