In my studies, I have found reference to units similar in many ways to the Solar Auxiliary. On Old Earth, in M2 there is mention of a class of warrior known as a SEAL. Apparently this is a word play in an ancient Terran language with the word meaning both a Terran pinniped and an acronym of the warrior's combat areas; namely "SEa", "Air", and "Land". In modern terms and Gothic Militaris Vulgaris this would make the Solar Auxillary "VAILS": "Void", "Atmosphere", and "Land".

Personally I compare the alpha legion more to that in regards to their operating procedures and mission types. I think the auxilia to be closer to the USMC in mission since they preform the tasks usually done traditionally by naval infantry such as boarding. Not to mention their discipline compared to other formations would also make me draw that comparison. The Astartes I consider an entirely different animal from Marines in our traditional sense as they technically are not part of the traditional military structure from what I understand from the web of bureaucracy. This is because since Astartes last I checked didn't have to follow orders from naval or guard officers since they were not part of the same overarching formation, but a separate entity.
