While many theories have been advanced as to the cause of the seemingly grid-like rock formations in the Elk River at Webster Springs, West Virginia, a geologist recently confirmed that the formations are due to a natural occurrence known as "tessellated pavement." The tessellated rocks at Webster Springs are rare, however, as other known tessellated formations occur on or near coastal areas and Webster Springs is far from any coast.
