This is where i stopped playing drums when i was a boy from 12 years old. It sounded like mathematics to me.... I started playing drums again late 30s and 12 years later still playing. Its all about the explanation. You do a grear job ! Keep up the good work!❤

Our Drum Line plays a cadence in 7/8 but we have to march in 7/4 for 2 measures to keep the band in step.

Great video. We literally just worked on a ‘7/4’ new song but I think it is now actually a 7/8! Anyway, I’ve sacked our drummer - we rehearse on Wednesday evening 7-10. Don’t be late. :)

I been playing drums since 1977. I been semi-pro, pro, toured, done sessions rock jazz country whatever needed anyway blah blah. I always enjoy these types of vids because there always something to learn. This vid is outstanding in that it is broken down very simply and easily then we can take that and practice with it. I will take this exercise and add some ghost notes to create a funk vibe ala Billy Cobham meets Dave Garibaldi and I think this be fun. Thanks for posting I sub and check out more.

Hey lady, thank for this video! I love 7/8 and the song that grabbed me is the Chris Squire song "Lucky Seven" from his "Fish Out of Water" album. Keep rockin' and keep on with the odd time signatures, please. Your steady and reliable timing is so pleasing to hear for this old guy bassist!

i dont get it. wouldnt that mean, that 7/8 on 80 bpm is the same as 7/4 on 160 bpm?

These are just convenient ways to annotate what's played and to coordinate with other musicians. In isolation, the only difference between an 1/8 and a 1/4 note is that an 1/8 is played twice as fast as the quarter. But notes are never played in isolation unless you're a metronome (with only one click type). So, you need to know how the beats/notes relate to each other. Time signature is similar. If all you did was play quarter notes on hihat for 2 min straight, you'd be in [something]/4, but it wouldn't really matter what the top number is. And yes, that would sound exactly the same as eighths at half the tempo (something/8 signature). Now, what if you had a guitarist next to you that was playing a 7 quarter note riff that repeated. Maybe in addition to the hihat quarter notes, you wanted to start throwing a crash on every one beat of what the guitarist is playing. Now, what time signature are you in? It suddenly matters. For sanity, in this situation, you'd probably like his/her "one" to be the same as your "one" (though, of course, not always, eg polymeters). Anyway, time signatures are tools for notation and coordination with other musicians. The fact that you could perfectly play a song without having a clue what time signature you're in is evidence of this. In contrast, if you don't know the note lengths or tempo, if even only intuitively, then you can't.

@@JayM928i see. so i guess there is just the "sweet spot" of time signature you COULD read a song in if you know what im trying to say. i just always do everything by ear and its worked until now 😂
