You missed the biggest oddity. At the West Coast Eagles game, prior to the game starting, the eagle that is released to fly around the stadium refused to go back to its perch. Flew around quite close to the stands and landed a few times. It ended up flying up to a corporate box and sitting there in the end. Took them 15 minutes to finally get it back.

6:10 this is not holding the ball under current interpretation as I understand it. If there is no prior opportunity, the player with the ball is only required to attempt to dispose of the ball. This includes dropping the ball to your foot, swinging and completely missing the ball even if you make no contact between ball and foot.

Good video as always. You didn't show the gold coast v bombers holding the ball in the final minutes where the bombers bloke isn't tackled, but when he drops it they called holding the ball lol. He had just shrugged 2 attempted 1 hand tackles.

Another oddity: I was at the Marvel game with my footy team, sitting not to far from the back on the very top row, one of our coaches threw a paper airplane which landed about halfway in between the goal square and fifty meter arc after flying for about 70 meters

6:30 This was the right call as regardless if the player was holding the ball the tackle was complete and Rowen just threw him to the ground. The Richmond player lost control of the ball too so this just makes it more convincing to me that this call was right being a free to Richmond. It’s sort of like how calls can overturned if a player makes contact off the ball.

The wild thing about the Garcia tackle on Daicos is that everyone stops and looks at the umpire because everyone there knew it was holding the ball.

3:10 I mean if you look at that one, in the tackle the ball isn't pinned to his body, he has the option of attempting to handball it away.

The Richmond/Hwthorn ruling of play on that you said was inconsistent was more about prior. He only just got the ball & was trying to kick. Listening to the umpires explanation, I thought it was just a poor decision by the umpires based upon the "no prior" ruling. The dropped ball by the Pies star was definitely HTB. I called Stringer's throw as I was watching the game.

Agreed: good call. On the goal-line analogy, if I'm a forward-line player, and my foot (or both feet) 'carries' the ball over line, I would absolutely expect a goal to be paid. In this boundary-line call, the only consideration is : is the ball dragging across the ground as it crosses the line? If not, then it's on-the-full.

5:55 some umpires will cut you some slack if you are in the motion of kicking the ball while being tackled. They shouldn't, because that means they are analysing intent rather than the actual method of disposal .

With the Mitchell one, I personally think its the correct call. its got to do with the fact they want people to stay on their feet, so by Mitchell jumping on the ground instead of being taken down, shows he could have stayed on his feet and put boot to ball.

@@chadchadderton when you see players kick a goal very close to the line you will see they are careful not to put their boot over the line, it will be called touched. I guess the rule is that you kick it through not push it through

The umpires really need to take a hard look at the difference between holding the ball and incorrect disposal. Players have gotten into the habit of just dropping the ball when in a contested situation and the umpire calls that it was knocked out in the tackle. If a player gets tackled and loses control of the ball it should be incorrect disposal, if they had prior or not.

No, that's not how the rule works. Umpires aren't calling that it was knocked out the tackle, they aren't paying HTB because if a player has no prior and makes a legal attempt to dispose of the football they cannot pay HTB.

There were quite a few mistakes made by the umpires on the new/old interpretation of HTB. It's been an issue forever & will continue to be, especially while there is bias by umpires that has always existed.
