So that abandoned Antique store was an antique?

A week ago I also bought a GAF 3100S for $5-at an estate sale. The woman I'm dating is a film collector and she had a Super8 sound film (which has about a 0.8mm wide magnetic sound track) which we watched, for the first time hearing the sound! Unfortunately it was mostly a few squirrels from the 1950s along with a woman riding a bicycle from that era-and virtually no use of the sound (e.g. for talking.) The "highlight" was the sound of morning doves during one of the squirrel sequences. After the third Super8 we watched, the bulb burned out but it's a modern 120V 150W halogen reflector bulb which will be fairly easy to find. The least technical solution for the power cord would be to open it up, cut the connector bits off, strip back the wires, and wire-nut on a 2-wire power cord (or scrap extension cord). Tie a knot in the cord inside the case (probably do that before wiring it up) so it can't pull out, wrap the wire nuts with electrical tape to be safe, and be done with it.

Nice scores! I have a GAF 3000S Super 8 Sound movie projector, which is quite close to the 3100S, but mine has no hacked AC jack. Still works and runs perfectly.

Hey, another great post, thank you! I had gnip-gnop as a child (mid 70s). It’s actually pronounced guh-nip guh- nop. (Ping pong backwards). I hope you have better thrifting luck soon!

GAF was pronounced as Gee Ay Eff, It stands for General Aniline & Film. They started in the 1890s making roofing materials, later went in to photographic film and equipment (Gen Xers remember them as the company that made the View Master.) They're still around, back to their roots as one of the biggest makers of roofing materials.

I inadvertently used to confuse it with Agfa, who made film for a while
@jamesslick4790
@jamesslick4790 6 жыл бұрын
Yeah, I can see that. Agfa still exists, Basically, the European (German,mostly) version of Eastman Kodak. As a kid, I confused Agfa with Argus and Ansco . Argus and Ansco were American, But Ansco and Agfa WERE merged for a time, So there's that. At least Kodak and Polaroid had distinct memorable names! Today I'm a camera collector and now fully know my Argus,Ansco, Agfa and GAF!, All of my modern shooting gear is Pentax, avoiding the whole confusion, LOL!

Concerning the Super 8 projector, I would snip the prongs off and solder the wires to a figure 8 style power socket and then JB weld the connector on the inside of the case.

Fun haul, thanks for sharing. I have a short video on my 3100S on my channel if you want to see one in action. Henry Fonda used to do GAF's commercials in the '70s or so and he always pronounced the company as G.A.F. (each letter separately.) I think a young Jodie Foster was in one too. Look around KZbin for them.

7:30 one of my aunts had a TV like that in the little dining nook off her kitchen for decades, and it still worked at least until as late as 1992 (I asked her once, she said it was purchased in 1958 or 1959). After she died, family had an opportunity to go thru her stuff and pick out what we wanted before the estate sale. And I looked EVERYWHERE for that TV. It was gone. :(

There are some other options for LPs in Sioux Falls. There's Last Stop CD Shop, which you may or may not have heard of. I only ever bought video games from there, but they do have a large selection of LPs, DVDs and VHS tapes. They can get a bit pricey, charging top dollar for rare copies of media. Even common popular titles can be a bit high. Another store is Ernie November, which mostly sells LPs, CDs, and various knick knacks related to the hippie subculture. As for things to look out for, keep an eye out for any "Buttons and Rusty" or "Chucklewood Critters" VHS tapes. These are 30 minute cartoon specials produced by two former Hanna-Barbera staffers, focusing on the adventures of a bear and fox cub. The tapes seem to be a bit rare. I rarely see these in the wild, and only a few are listed at any given time on FleaBay.

I was also going to bring up Last Stop and Ernie November, I’ve built up my entire record collection from them. By record collection I mean about 15 records and only 1 was Ernie November, so i guess the point I’m trying to make is you’re cheating yourself if you’re not going to Last Stop. But this video gave me ideas for places to shop at I wouldn’t have thought of otherwise too, so there’s that. Also I think that memories cassette tape was more of an early to mid 90s design. I looks like the same style of tape I recorded my middle school prank phone calls on before some killjoy invented caller ID.
@OddityArchive

I've been to both many times (both Last Stop locations at that). I've always had a much better CD haul from Last Stop than anything else. I think I've only ever bought one LP and one tape from Ernie November (and that counts numerous visits to town prior to moving here).

Yeah, Easy handyman fix. Just splice a new cord on the wires, Its likely neither grounded or polarized, as it's in a plastic case, and it's fairly modern. A cord chopped of of a dead TV is enough for it.

Some of it. Though I love it, a lot of it is pretty contemporary humor. I think that's a problem SNL has too. A lot of pop-culture references, so younger generations don't know what they're talking about half the time, when they watch old episodes. But I'm glad to know it's still so well-loved by the fans. That cast was genius.

I would just splice a cord and plug off of a dead TV or something right on the wires. Something like that isn't going to get daily use so the convenience of a detachable cord is more of a luxury.
@thaddeusmcgrath
@thaddeusmcgrath 6 жыл бұрын
On the projector you can straight wire it and tie a few knots in the wire on the inside to keep it from being pulled out of the plug slot for an easy fix. Or you can still straight wire it, glue a cover over the plug slot from the inside, drill a hole in the center of the cover and mount a strain relief power cord connector onto it if you want a fashionable power cord installed.

They still make halogen bulbs for projectors (and some DJ and some medical equipment that use similar bulbs), but the new old stock is usually much cheaper. The NOS Sylvania bulbs are the best, GE bulbs tend to be junk and die early. Watch the prongs on the bulbs for oxidation on the NOS stuff though, can cause premature failure of the bulb socket.

65 bucks is reasonable compared to the 100 dollars the local Salvation Army (yes, Salvation Army of all places) is charging for a late 50s General Electric equivalent of that RCA set. Meanwhile they sold me a 1978 RCA set for 10 bucks...
@jamesslick4790
@jamesslick4790 6 жыл бұрын
If the 1950s set (RCA or GE) worked, $65 or $100 is more than OK, Fewer people restore old TVs than radios, (as more electronic skill is required) So working vintage (or restored) TVs are more rare, And in this case these are portables and "lived" a harder "life" than consoles, increasing their rarity. For a TV collector, these "little" sets are a "find"- If they are cosmetically nice, they find use as display pieces or props, as they have a more "period" look than their console brothers. A 1978 TV right now is considered no more collectible than a 1998 TV (That will change in a couple of decades,LOL) Plus, for all of the good that the Salvation Army in reality does, I'd buy the TV for a display piece and feel good about where the money went.
