⛵️UNBELIEVABLE "Small" HUGE Sailboat!! Ep.314

We visited the Ovni 37 from Alubat! Such a spacious an aluminum bluewater cruising sailboat!
We are Duca and Roberta, a Brazilian couple that during a sabbatical trip in 2016 decided to follow our dream. So, we created "Odd Life Crafting", a project composed of many smaller projects that we call seasons.
The first one was the creation of Odd Life Crafting. The idea was to build a metal boat to be able to travel the world taking our house with us, but we didn't have money for that. So, we started the next season: we built a tiny shipping container house with no prior experience in building to gain some skills to build a boat. When we were almost finished we found a boat 700km away from our hometown that was neglected for over 22 years and we spent 2 years refitting her (Season 3). The last season has been a dream coming true… we are exploring the Brazilian coast with OUR BOAT that we called Odd.. But wait? What happened to the house? Also, Boris Hermann/SV Malizia (IMOCA 60) has a modified Scow-bow and they speak to the added stability and forgiveness when running off. Curious how this would work on a smaller hull... definitely adds more beam forward giving the V berth more room.

A great analysis from one who knows what he/they are talking about from first hand experience. Going from fiberglass to aluminum is going to be quite the different experience and I am looking forward to it---especially the cork spray on insulation after hearing horror stories from boats with cork board glued on. You're keeping me on the edge of my seat, folks! We "geezers" need this kind of Sunday experience.

Great videos, one observation on the guard wires/rails. In the UK it is normal to have one end of the wires tied so it can be cut to drop the guard wire or wires to recover a man overboard. It's much "easier " to lift a wet unresponsive body to toe board level and slide them under the top wire through the gap (bottom wire dropped) than to try to get them right over the top bar/wire and back on deck. It is more like you can keep them flat to reduce the liklihood of problems caused by hydrostatic compression, having them die when lifted vertically. Both systems have there advantages and disadvantages and its down to personal preference but there are reasons why some people prefer the wires.

There were so many things on the space that was hard to see the bottom 😁 but I’m pretty sure it’s raw aluminium. The tanks were plastic, you can see on the bottom of the saloon table when Duca opens the wooden lid on the top of them.

Sailing in to freedom is at a shipyard in Vietnam that seems to be good at Aluminium hulls. SeaWind & Rapido are manufacturing in Vietnam as well.

U can use Esthec with a night glowing floor, its very ve3ry save for sailboats if u have to go in the dark... So esthec wont get hot in the sun and dont get cold when its cold. and lives very long and is natural degradeable.

These to me are more like a launch, a motorboat. But they are rigged for sailing. Features are a distraction from a vessel made suitable for sailing. Blue water, i believe. One which can collide at full steam ahead and contain the damage without being scuttled? A safer boat. I have my boat still but contemplate the able but thin glass hull. Maybe i like it to be a heavy boat . With a stronger skin.

You should rethink your shower ventilation ideas… if you minimise ventilation you can eliminate steam. Completely enclosed shower cubicles are the driest option for boats and homes… have a look at your kettle as an experiment… when it is boiling with the lid closed there will be no steam as it turns to condensation and runs down the walls,if you open the lid lots of steam will fill the room.. If you do the same with your shower you keep all the moisture in the shower and reduce mould 100 fold.

Maybe it was clear on the video. Our intention is to have a entire (one piece) fiberglass cabine with a totally closed door. But with a top hatch to ventilating when not using. But in a way that we can close everything when taking a shower. 😊

@@OddLifeCrafting perfect! Minimise gaps with silicone extrusions… a well sealed shower is the best way to minimise condensation in your boat.

For your hatches, build custom hatches like Sailing Life on Jupiter has. They never leak and are supper strong. For your deck, it's best to have a white deck. Any other color that you use will get supper hot. I've never seen anyone use cork but I'd assume due to the color that it would get really hot and you would have to glue it down which won't last long. Most people that use a glue down material have to replace it in a short amount of time and it's a pain to get the glue off. It would be nice if you end up getting a boat that's no longer than 48 feet which is the maximum length for a marina before they start charging you an oversized price. I like the 46 foot design that you spoke about in one of your recent videos. Hopefully you can afford that size. The cork on the inside of the boat seems like a very good idea and one that I haven't heard about before. I've heard that you don't want to put any insulation below the waterline but it is a very good idea to paint your bilges so that the salt water doesn't corrode the aluminum.

Yes it is very large and nicely laid out. The 4m beam is huge for 11m length. It definitely needs the twin rudders. I wonder how it feels sailing -the fear is it could have less pleasant motion in rough seas light and be slow when loaded down.

Glad to see the French using Cork ... The wine connection fits well with the sailing.. Corks light durable and green ..it can even be sprayed on interiors. For floors its great and can be refurbished with a light sanding .. for the deck. The hull form is akin to the modern Racing and Scow bow designs so it has hard chines and twin rudders on which it can sit and track ... It also makes the vessel more stable sitting on a beach or mud flat whilst drying out. Odd did tend to lean quite a bit if not sat just right. If a chop blows up you can end up cockpit flooded before your the tide allows you floating level . Separate loo and shower means less conflict of emergency use whilst in harbour or busy anchorage s. 😂

@@clivestainlesssteelwomble7665 I agree with all the positives you mentioned, but I question the value of beamy scow bow designs for an aluminum cruiser. I think the marketing is ahead of reality for beamy boats. The box rule racers are beamy because they can carry giant square top sail plans that get them planing. On a cruising boat like this there is too little sail and too much weight. The performance is less than a 37ft conventional L/B boat. I really like the layout of the Meta design they plan to build. I hope they don't get any bad ideas from this.

for gasoline / gasolina : in french, Gasoil is for Diesel engine. Diesel is the engine type, Gasoil is the fuel, many makes the confusion. Gasoil comme from Gas (petrol)'s - oil : "oil from petrol". "Thick" oil. And this thick oil is for diesel engines. Essence (gasolina) : essence=spirit , = "the more distilled version of petrol" , and it's for "Otto/Beau de rochas engines" , ok, nobody uses this term. So we call it from the fuel's name. A rare time french was more precise logic and accurate naming something

The layout doesnt work out for me. It meanders to much and all that space for storage. You are living off grid for the vast majority of an exploration boat, why do you need that much storage? Seems wasteful to me
