On July 18th 2016, the Ottawa Senators announced that they had traded forward Mika Zibanejad and a 2018 2nd round draft pick to the New York Rangers in exchange for forward Derick Brassard and a 2018 7th round pick. Since this trade, one team has been reaping the rewards, while the other wished they could get a refund...
Join me as I explore why the Zibanejad-Brassard trade gave one team all the buyer's remorse!

To be fair, despite the fact that Ottawa did lose the trade and Zibanejad has one of the best contracts in hockey at the moment, I don’t think this video paints the full picture. Brassard was in Ottawa for two seasons and in that time he had 77 points in 139 regular season games. In that same timespan Zibanejad had 84 points in 128 regular season games. The main differentiator in those first two years was the fact that in 2017 Ottawa had the deepest and most exciting playoff run they’ve seen in 10 years, which likely would never have happened without Brassard. Big Game Brass was acquired to help in the playoffs and he did. The other part that was left out from the video was despite the fact that the Zibanejad trade remains one of Dorions worst trades to date, the trade that sent Brassard to Pittsburgh is probably one of his best. Ottawa ended up with: - 2016 2nd round pick, Filip Gustavsson - 2018 1st round pick, Jacob Bernard-Docker - 2018 2nd round pick, Jonny Tychonick - 2019 2nd round pick, Mads Sogaard - 2020 3rd round pick So although Zibanejad is exceptional and still continues to improve every season, the 2017 playoff run was invaluable and when weighed with the prospects Ottawa subsequently acquired I’d say the scales are closer to balanced.

I mean, it was an upsetting bust for Ottawa and I'll be the first to tell you as a lifelong fan of the team, but Derick Brassard is one of those players who benefits from a highly defensive regimented system, which is why he kind of experienced a rebirth in Long Island under Trotz and why Ottawa under Guy Boucher pursued him. And like your video indicated, Brassard was a playoff performer and that's what Ottawa ultimately wanted, even if it was at a high price of a coveted prospect in Mika. Brassard will be on a Cup-winning team one day, but maybe not as a star like Mika.

-All hindsight, Brassard was, in fact touted as a better player at the time -Zibanejad would've been traded most likely to get draft picks (knowing how Eugene is) -1 player can only change a franchise so much and for that reason I don't think Ottawa would've avoided a rebuild -Brassard did in fact help them reach the eastern conference finals and who knows (literally impossible to know) if Zibanejad would've actually pushed them over the line It's a bad trade for the sens but it's not like Zibanejad would've even been the same player he is on the sens (in fact I would argue completely against him being a great player on the sens) and for that reason I don't look back on this trade overly negatively.

My thoughts exactly. As a die hard sens fan I feel no buyers remorse. I value that 2017 playoff run so much that I'm happy with everything they did to get there. from an objective point of view obviously the sens 'lost' this trade but I don't mind it. Everything from that team is gone now anyway, eventually Mika was gonna get purged.
@Wexter0083
@Wexter0083 3 жыл бұрын
@@TheRichardson711 To be fair even then we have not fully lost the trade. If we look at the full trade tree we flipped Brassard for Gustavsson who can still become an NHL calibre goalie, a draft pick which we flipped to draft Jacob Bernard-Docker a potential Top 6 or even elite level defenceman. So the deal can still even out to a win-win for both clubs as if Gustavsson becomes our starter or even Bernard-Docker as a key anchor on our blue-line then I think we'll be fine. Much like the Karlsson trade, this is a trade waaaayyyy to early to call when you're dealing with prospects. Remember when people thought San Jose won the Dany Heatley trade? Right crazy things can happen in the NHL.

@@mayuyufan Not a lot of people were calling Zbanajad elite either till his breakout season last year. Always been a Z-bad fan so I was disappointed to see him go, but he did play a number of his years under Spezza so it does not surprise me that he had learned a thing or two and emerged as a fantastic player. As for JBD he has become something very special in the NCAA for the University of North Dakota as he put up 25pnts and was a +21 in 32 games played which is very solid points totals in the NCAA for a defenceman. That and he has consistently improved his game every year throughout his career. He was disappointing in the World Jrs when you look at his points totals, but he was very defensively responsible. Ottawa does not need another points guy, but a defenceman who can compliment Chabot and Branstrom which JBD can provide. Hence why I said he can be Top 6 level and Ottawa still would not have fully lost the trade, but if he turns Elite it can even out. We need to understand we cannot fully judge a trade till a good chunk of the prospects has panned out.

They gave Pittsburgh fits in the East final and were one double-overtime goal away from the Stanley Cup finals. The moment I saw this trade I knew the Rangers stole Zibanejad and I hate the Rangers. His potential was way too high. Brassard might have been a better two way player at the time but you could argue Mika was already as good if not superior offensively already. Add in the fact Mika was 6 years younger and it makes this trade more unbelievable, that it actually went through. In Mika's 2011 draft year he was the guy everyone said could end up being the best out of that draft in the years to come, along with Huberdeau. He just wasn't as NHL ready as guys like RNH, Larsson and Couturier for example. These are the type of trades that set back the Senators for years. This and the Duchene trade primarily. Should have just held onto him but that's why Ottawa was the joke of the NHL for those few seasons. Good to see them turning it around though. They got a lot of young talent even if there years from contending.

Actually Gorton has made some great deals running the Rangers. They traded Ryan Spooner for Ryan Strome, what a steal after getting Spooner as part of the package for Rick Nash. For Nash who sucked in Boston, the Rangers now have Ryan Lindgren, K'Andre Miller, and Ryan Strome after swapping first round picks to draft Miller. Can you imagine a rental in Nash who stunk in Boston and the Rangers end up at the end with Strome, Lindgren, and Miller. How about signing Adam Fox from Calgary who didn't sign him? Half their defense now is Fox, Lindgren, and Miller and they also stole DeAngelo who played fine but was a jerk and basically was kicked off the team. They now are playing young Libor Hajek on defense who was acquired as part of a package with Tampa Bay so 67% of the defense was made by shrewd moves and Strome, Zibanejad, and Panarin look pretty good up front. The Rangers have an army of young defenseman coming so in the next year or two they'll have great assets to play or trade. I wouldn't knock Jeff Gorton that much. He needs some grit and a guy to win faceoffs but they are the youngest team in the NHL.

I guess they gotta win something since they can't win any Stanley Cups. An original six team founded in 1926 with 4 Stanley Cups. That's one Stanley Cup pretty much every quarter century. That's pathetic.

Nobody cares about that. ‘Overall championships’ is an overrated stat. Nobody cares about the 20’s, 30’s, 40’s, 50’s, 60’s, 70’s, or 80’s unless you’re in your 40’s, 50’s, 60’s, 70’s, 80’s, 90’s, or 100 🤷🏻‍♂️ The Rangers are easily one of the most dangerous teams in professional sports nowadays, you wanna disagree with me? I dare you..

@@codymason2471 Yep, you're right. If anything, Strome is the one benefiting greatly from Panarin. Zibs is doing fantastic on a different line.
