Keith, Lou is my dad, and I want to thank you for making this video. It means a great deal to him to see that his tools have found a good home and are being appreciated, and will be used by someone who cares about them. He has been a machinist, tool & die maker, for nearly 70 years, and letting go of his shop and tools, though necessary, has been very difficult and painful for him. Seeing them go to a good home helps to take a little bit of the sting out of it for him. Your video is well done, and I know it means something to him to be able to see his special, personal collection in good hands. Thanks again.

Jerry - it is my honor to have been able to purchase these tools from Lou. While my only correspondence with him has been over email, I can tell he is a heck of a guy. I am looking forward to hopefully be able to continue his legacy using these fine tools!

Just came across this video... I enjoy all of Keith’s videos but this one really touched me because of your comment. I’m 42 & starting a second career in tool & die. One of the most enjoyable parts of this transition has been meeting a bunch of “old timers” like your dad who are selling their tools online now that they’ve retired. If I’m being honest, a big part of why I decided to become a tool & die maker was because I wanted to join the tradition they were part of and it’s been a little disappointing to learn that that tradition is going away. CNC, off-shoring, cost-cutting, etc... are making it less attractive for companies to invest in “human capital”, I suppose. Meeting guys like your dad, watching Keith’s videos (and many others) and building my home machine shop are filling in the gap, I suppose. Anyway, thanks for posting this comment and tell your dad that there are guys starting out that really look up to his generation and appreciate all that they learned, did, and shared with the world!

@@johnsquared1978 Thank you for commenting. My dad is now 94, and still watches Keith's videos (and others) in order to retain contact with the tool & die/machinist world. Best of luck in your new career.

@@jcosyn Jerry, I am a 50 yr old Master Toolmaker, I know how much emotional capital it cost your dad to part with these. These "things" are a toolmakers extra hands, eyes, fingers, and arms. We know, exactly which drawer they are in, where in the drawer they're in, and could find them blindfolded. I don't know if I could sell mine, but now at least someone appreciates them. They'll get oiled, worked, and oooohhh and ahhhhhed over. Please thank your father for me, one toolmaker to another.

That is a very nice collection. Your deal was not very good. What you saved in cash was displaced by soul. It takes a great deal of empathy and respect to become the gatekeeper of these tools. I know you will take care of them and now it’s your turn to scrape off some of your soul while using these tools. It’s humbling but each new owner carries the memory of the previous owner forward. The biggest task is in getting ones wife to understand this! When I was in college, I was hiking to a book store. There was an old building in downtown Boulder overgrown by shrubs and trees. Had I been driving I would have missed it. There next to the building was an original narrow gage locomotive. In the building was old man Larson. In his 90s! His shop was full of old black machine tools. Years later, I researched it. There in the archives was a photo of 14 young men who ran that machine shop. It’s all gone now. Replaced by a yuppie coffee bar. The contents of the shop and the locomotive were scraped as Larson had no kids. He was a sweet old man with years of experience. The sine bars and sine plate are awsome. I love using them as I don’t have angle parallels. It may be overkill in terms of accuracy but there simplistic use makes up for it. No protractors, no digital Chinese angle whoopies, no convoluted set ups. The only thing your missing is a set of tooling balls. I love using sine bars and tooling balls. Makes complicated easy.

I know about down sizing and getting rid of tools. We still have a mortar mixer, scaffold, mortar box, masonry saw and various hand tools with enough wear that nobody seems to want. I think Greg Jr. will keep them in case he wants to build a storage building or something along those lines. My hand tools (masonry only) are already gone so I won't be doing any bricklaying. Now, we do have a little Atlas lathe, a bench top drill press, welder and a bunch of hand tools so we will no doubt be making and fixing things related to his baking equipment and my ham radio antenna making hobby. Light duty all the way but I love watching you and a couple of the other machinists on KZbin; I have learned a lot! Thanks, Greg.

That Tool that you spoke of is a "Surface gauge" not a Height gauge .Its used for scribing and point of reference work ... usually used on a "Surface Plate " Hence the term Surface Gauge FYI : )) That looks like a Criterion Boring HEAD not a boring bar .That Sine plate fixture was probably made by an APPRENTICE Journey Man as a Project he would be graded on ... I have several like it , NONE are exactly the same . Most are FIVE INCH Sine .... As to be used in conjunction with Nominal FIVE Inch Sine Tables .( charts ) Love this Stuff I've been a toolmaker for over 50 Years

Keith, those angled parallels at 25:55, check it they have a slight angle off from 90 degrees from the wide side to the edge. If so they are used in a mill vice to hold down your part when you have a part that you want to make tight on the bottom of the vice. Check out Starrett #54 hold downs on google.

Very nice score Keith! I'm sure you will continue the legacy that some of those hand made tools deserve. User made tools are so very cool, they have many hours of someone's fine attention for detail into them, and they all tell a story of their own. I'm in the market for a planer gauge, maybe we can do a trade. I'll have some goodies at the bash, looking forward to meeting you and many other fellow machinist that paved the way for younger guys like myself. Thank you for all you do!

Hello Keith, I love watching your odds and ends updates. I am going in to have my prostate reamed out on Fri. May 20. In fact you look a lot like my urologist. The Anesthesist wants to give me a spinal but that scares me. Anyway, I have atria fibulation but my Cardiologist gave his approval for the surgery. He sent a catheter into the heart area and found one artery fifty per cent blocked and all the other arteries were wide open. Nice collection of tools. I am a plumber by trade so none of them would be any good for me. I purchased a Starrett dial caliper, six inches long for ten dollars at a garage sale years ago. Starrett does make lovely tools. Nice to watch your videos. All the best, Edgar

Hi Keith enjoyed the video of another tool junkie going through a box or two of candy. I was surprised to see what you called in the second box; a height gauge with no markings as I have one just like it with no markings that I can find anywhere. It was an extra item when I purchased a starrett 196 dial indicator set. I have no idea what it's for but have used it to hold indicator checking the run out on disks and wheels

K&T :) - It is a very nice unit and has extra arbors, Lou also found the 3 jaw for it under his bench and sent that along to me as well. I am going to shoot a video on it and a old drill fixture I got from him. I think he said he is 84 and figured it was about time to retire.

+Practical Metal Lou is my father. He will be 90 in a few months. He was still actively working in his shop until about a year ago, doing piece work to keep busy. It is devastating to him to have to give up the shop and the collection of tools he has spent more than 70 years assembling. Keith got a steal, but my dad is happy knowing the tools went to someone who will appreciate them and use them.

Tapered parallels are for use in a shaper or mill vice etc holding thin items by their edge. The narrow edges of the parallels should be slightly off parallel and this induces a downwards pinch on your workpiece when the vice is tightened.

That Flynn Tool at around 24:30 is a micro boring head! I have a similar one from Flynn and they are great. The only weird thing is that the flat for the set screw is opposite the cutting edge, not 90 deg. to it. I have found that Criterion boring bars work well since you can get them with two flats 90 deg. apart.

Keith, On the broken mirror. Go by your local auto parts store, and look at their tools section. They will have inexpensive inspection mirrors, usually they have telescoping handles, and they fold & swivel. They come in either round or rectangular, and most importantly, they usually use the same double ball connector/pivot, that is on the mag mount you have. Take the mag mount to the auto parts, if its ball connector is the same size as the inspection mirror, you just found a cheap, local, and convenient, replacement mirror.

The Morse taper reamers you have there are a set, a spiral flute taper shank machine rougher to open up a step-drilled or bored hole, and a straight flute hand finisher. The straight flute hand one is used to finish the machined taper to size and angle as the machine reamer leaves a coarser finish and a very slightly smaller angle. To refinish an abused or worn hole use the machine reamer lightly first to remove any burrs or ridges then finish with the other. If you want to true up a drill press spindle fix a center to the table and dial it in. Or drill a shallow hole and set a bearing ball in it to act as center. Then set the reamer shank on the center and turn by hand using the quill for down feed. The straight shanks for the boring heads are to use in a turret lathe. Mike (o\!/o)

Yes, I have both a straight and spiral No. 3 Morse taper set to go with this No. 2 set. I talked to Lou about the straight shank on the one and he said that he would chuck it up in a lathe on that round shank to clean up the taper in a tail stock.
