For me the delayed controls are part of the gameplay. It's exrremely unsettling at the begining but very rewarding once you have a good grasp on the controls. Edit : Also imo the best element of the game is its artistic direction and mood, the game is sad, grim but also fascinating. Escaping rupture farms in the night is probably my favorite part of the game in terms of artistic direction.

I remember seeing the night sky as a child and feeling the sense of freedom, getting past the watch towers in the background and slowly seeing the industrial buildings sink away into the shadowed wild. Making it to the fireflies and campfires, the art and taste of it was amazing. This was the first game I played on the Playstation and its still left an impression till this day on me.

You get used to the delay after a while. I actually kinda liked it since it's a bit more like controlling an actual creature that's alive instead of a robot. Abe doesn't get up to speed instantly just like none of us do. It's still precise since he does exactly what you tell him to do and does the exact same thing every time you press certain buttons, he just takes half a beat to respond to your inputs. That type of thing used to be a lot more common in games, see stuff like the original Prince of Persia and Out of This World. Also, the visuals in this game always kept me going. The stages you showed where Abe was in shadow was a nice touch to me. Some of the screens later on are just beautiful. I think this was one of the last games that was "Nintendo hard" with no difficulty setting or anything. You got your skill and your brains. That's it. When we got this game I either didn't know it existed yet or there wasn't a "gamefaqs" walkthrough at the time. Some of those puzzles are just devious. It's so satisfying when you finally figure it out on your own and now down a bunch of enemies by taking over one of there buddies. Hearing them scream "Help!" is just fantastic. I know it can try your patience at times but it really is worth it to pay through the entire thing.

I played this game as a kid and couldn’t beat it. Came back to it as an adult and absolutely loved it. The remake is also amazing on PS4 I highly recommend you play it if you haven’t! They did such a good job.
@jonthedoors5 жыл бұрын
The nack to the controls is learning the timings of how many 'squares' it takes to stop when running, jump, roll, etc All the movement is divided up into specific steps. Once you get that, the control scheme and timings become a lot easier. You need to play Exodus next. It vastly improves on Odyssey while essentially playing the same way. It's also a little more generous with its difficulty and much easier to finish
@tenbeat5 жыл бұрын
Oddworld: Abe's Oddysee is one of my favorite games ever, bar none. I cannot wait for Soulstorm. By the way, Soulstorm is sort of a remake of Exoddus, but it'd be more accurate to call it a reimagining. An entirely new game that follows on from New 'n' Tasty, sort of like if Exoddus was wiped clean from existence and a new game was made from all of its ideas and concepts, along with an additional 20 years of Lorne designing the game.
@Jack_804 жыл бұрын
will it still play in 2d or switch to 3d? seems like switching to 3d would ruin the feel and it would be entirely different, and probably not as good.

My fav story about this game is when I was younger, I wasn't very good at the game been 5/6 years old but I just loved it, visually and auditorily. People used to just look at me with uncomfortable eyes as I walked around town with my mum going "Follow me, okay!", *farts* and imitating a Mudokon laugh.
@VitZ92 жыл бұрын
I love when you're a kid and you think everyone knows exactly what you do! But in reality, everyone was probably just giving your mum some pretty dirty looks for bringing in this defective kid with severe flatulence issues, who keeps asking people to follow him and then farting in their faces! 😆
@AgeofJP5 жыл бұрын
the Oddworld games may just have the coolest and one of if not the most original world I've seen so far...an alien setting that doesn't scream "this came out of a human mind" in your face at every corner. Of course there are parallels like the weakminded and naive mudokens representing our middle class and lower that eat's anything given by the big corporations but in Oddworld it's fleshed out and explained in it's own lore so that you don't get the feeling of seeing a generic human story through non-human characters like in Disney and Pixar movies. I've waited for something similar to this universe for almost two decades now, but everything nowadays has some present day setting, a future setting (with humans), a middle-age fantasy setting (with humans) or a space setting (with humans or aliens that behave like humans)
@brendanspaulding79305 жыл бұрын
AgeofJP yes, I love worlds in games and wish they were explored more. With today’s technology everything feels so oddly generic on the setting side of things. Why don’t more people aims for new settings like this? I just don’t get it. And you describe it perfectly, even the games with cool worlds can feel too much like they came from a human mind, and it can make the world feel empty. Odd world, dark souls, hollow knight, and doom are the only games I can think of when it comes to cool worlds that make me feel immersed. This list shouldn’t be so small.
@AgeofJP5 жыл бұрын
@@brendanspaulding7930 Dark Souls got the feeling right and it's such an interesting concept, but what I love about Oddworld so much is how everything makes sense in a realistic way. And I'm talking about all the things the game doesn't ever tell you...for example the worlds in DS are inhabited by many reasonably placed enemies but also a fair share of enemies that just don't make sense (even though they're awesome ofc) where in comparison every race/species in Oddworld that lives where you encounter it and they're all designed somewhat anthropologically correct and with a ton of background detail. The Scrabs you meet along the way are either captured animals waiting to be processed into food or wild ones trying to survive. So even though they are brutal beasts that will rip any other animal apart (even their own kind) the game was designed so that you only rarely would need to harm them and often it's not even possible. You mostly run from them (also because they're terrifying)... the Scrabs, Paramytes, Fleeches, Slogs, Sligs, Glukkons and so on are not monsters that fill stages you fight through, they're different kinds of more or less intelligent animal species that fill an odd world you trespass
@HamidKarzai7 ай бұрын
@@AgeofJPi believe you may be interested in the Zeno Clash series of games, the story is anything but generic and the world is just as alien as oddworld: Zeno Clash 1 & 2 And the latest entry, which I haven't played yet but seems to have received the most praise: Clash: Artifacts of Chaos

I think the "delayed" controls you speak of are partly due to playing the PAL version, if you play the NTSC version (or any PC version) you'll notice it plays noticeably faster and the controls feel similarly less delayed.

09:30 that bit with the scrab is brutal, particularily when you come out and still have a few screens to the next checkpoint. One word of advice, if you hold the jump button rather than trying to tap it twice you'll clear the two consecutive holes on that level. Makes it a little bit easier.
@zoostation645 жыл бұрын
The first ever game I played for PS1 back in the late 90s. Hours of fun and frustration. Never beat it!
@BeerBellyDK5 жыл бұрын
The 2nd game has a quick save function, which takes away the frustration of having to replay large sections of the game over and over again. The controls are largely the same, but slightly tighter in the sequel, and interactions with fellow mudokons, is much deeper, and a lot more complicated, since their mood impact if they will do as you say or not. And if that's not enough to make one want to play it, here's a sentence that will. Remote controlled explosive farts. Oh yes, you read that right. :) I think you should give it a go. Exoddus is much more forgiving than Oddysee, while still retaining the beautiful artwork and animations. I for one like the sequel a whole lot more, and seeing the frustrations you had with Oddysee, you just might like Exoddus better as well. :)

the jumping is definitely not luck based.. the feeling of input delay to me felt like character weight that fits so well with the animation, like when you jump on to a ledge and just hang there swinging with abes arms in full extension or falling onto a platform and abe grunts and the animation of the impact going to his knees as it looks like he almost falls over.

Not on the skill level of modern speed runners. But I could finish it with the bad ending in a bit over an hour and good ending, with the minimum rescued. About another hour. I wouldn't be able to do that now.
