One of the greatest songs Robert Wyatt ever wrote. Although the text makes no sense I deeply understand what Robert wants to say. This song makes shudders running down my back and makes tears flow. I’ve listened to many covers of this song but no one had the magic I thought only Robert can express. But when I first listened to this song from Odeia the magic was there with the first tones of the guitar. And then this fantastic voice which also brings new colours to the song by bringing it to a climax. The solos of the violin adapt themselves exactly to the mood of the song. Thanks to Odeia for this beautiful cover, thanks to Robert for writing this song and for his recognition that he paid these four young musicians

I'd long been an admirer of Robert Wyatt. I saw him with Soft Machine. Then there was Matching Mole. So I bought Rock Bottom as soon as it was released. I've listened to thousands of albums since then, but it's always stayed with me. To try to name one's favourite album is an exercise in absurdity, but, if really pushed, I might say Rock Bottom is mine; and Alifib is my favourite track on it. The algorithm threw this up when I was watching some old Hatfield and The North videos. I clicked on the link with a mixture of curiosity and trepidation. It's such an intensely personal song - like Joni Mitchell's A Case Of You - it's hard to believe anyone would be foolhardy enough to attempt to cover it. I watched the video six times in a row, in tears; not just misty-eyed, but with tears running down my cheeks. Not because the song may seem melancholic, especially with the grim hindsight of Robert Wyatt's fall between writing and recording it, but because these four immensely talented young musicians know the song after all this time, they wanted to record it, and they cared enough about it to come up with this beautiful arrangement. From the first notes on the guitar, it's clear this isn't just any old cover. It's hard to imagine the song without Hugh Hopper's glorious bass, let alone Robert Wyatt's singing, but they've managed to bring something new to it while remaining faithful to the original. The instrumental work is wonderful, making every note count. And then there's the singer. I've listened to this song hundreds of times, and I know it by heart. Her phrasing is impeccable. She has a gorgeous voice, and she sings with great simplicity and sincerity; as did Robert Wyatt. I was six years late to the feast, but it's a sumptuous one. My respect, admiration, and gratitude for moving an old man to tears of bittersweet joy.

A most haunting and beautiful rendition of a rather obscure song which mesmerized me as a teen.
