D2 is great steel for knives, just requires a little more care to keep it in good shape (well oiled). And it holds an edge so much better than any 420/440 stainless. Thx for the review.

In south Portugal it is still a tradition to "sell" knifes to a newly born, they do not give them because it "cuts" friendship so they are sold for a symbolic price, knifes are both symbolic and practical around here. A knife is a tool, my mom taught me how to use it, and I never leave my house without a pocket knife, and I have another in my car, and right know I have three in my desk. Small and larger blade knifes are better in my opinion.

Space shuttle steel? That is so outdated! Everyone knows the only knife steel worth anything is made from a Damascus pattern blend of mithril and scraps recovered from the Roswell crash site. The scales simply must be made of genuine unicorn horn and it must have a sheath made of minotaur leather. Anything else couldn't possibly peel an apple, cut a string or slice tape properly!

I always carry a small pocketknife as well as a micro-Leatherman tool with me. I get teased about it a lot. Well, you really realize how much you use them when they are not around. Last year when I went to the Albuquerque International Balloon Fiesta, I carried everything on the plane and could not take them with me. This year I am mailing a set out there or picking up one of each out there and just keeping them at my sister's house. Having a good knife with you is a good thing, the ones you showed look interesting.

Finally it is said, knives are tools not weapons. By the way, D2 is great for knives. Inhave a Canal Street knive in D2, and keeps an edge very well. The only downside is, due to its large carbides, D2 fairly easy chips. Just keep that in mind and you’ll enjoy these knives for a long time. Personally I’d prefer to see these little knives in Sandvik 12C27. Tough and easy to sharpen in the field.

The name alone makes me want to buy it. Who wouldn't want to carry an Odenwolf? I think this would be a great GHB knife... fixed blade, small, with a fire starter. I am working on a mini GHB that works for urban and suburban situations where having compact, light weight, items are ideal. In fact, if you are so inclined, I would love to see your take on an Urban or Suburban BOB or GHB someday. 🍻

Looks like a Mora Eldris with a better handle. I have been wanting their Sowcatcher (very large, double.edge) for a while. I really like neck knives - I have a bit of a neck knife collection and may have to check this one out. The funny thing is that, just a few years ago, D2 was considered to be a semi-premium knife steel and was very desirable and not commonly available. Many knife people got very excited when Ontario offered a special edition of their RAT 1 folder in D2. I have one or two of those as well as a special edition Buck 110 with light walnut scales and a drop point, D2 blade. At one point some respected custom knife makers were offering D2 as a steel option. The one criticism was that it could become brittle in very cold temperatures. I live in East Tennessee - it sometimes gets cold, here but not that cold. I think the real problem with D2 is that it became commonly and widely available so the knife snobs could no longer be like, "Oooh, look at me - I have a D2 knife and you don't" so they started bashing on D2 and people who don't know any better believe them and parrot what they say. There have also been some issues with some companies, especially Chinese companies, putting 'D2' on everything because it was such a desirable steel. In reality many of those blades were made of low end, crap steel and not real D2 so when the blades sucked D2's reputation took a hit even though D2 wasn't really even involved. Six or seven years back it wasn't uncommon for guys on knife channels to perform various formal or informal tests to see if a knife that claimed to be D2 really was - and it wasn't uncommon to find that they weren't. If they actually did use some (possibly low quality) version of D2 then they may not have heat treated it right so, again, the reputation suffered. Some of the better Chinese companies seem to be figuring D2 out now, though.
@dadbudgetadventures
@dadbudgetadventures 4 ай бұрын
Yeah, over saturation was the real issue. People got sick of seeing it and turned on it. Then people started regurgitating the negative stuff with no other real substance to back it up. It’s a shame people get that way over something that doesn’t deserve the naysayers.

They included images to identify which knives are recalled. Neither of yours would be recalled. Simply, they made prototypes without the brass grommet in the end of the handle where the lanyard hole is. The production knives should have that brass tube back there to anchor the tang inside the handle. They said there is a chance that, without the brass tube, the blade could separate from the handle. Personally, sounds like an unlikely scenario, but I’m sure their lawyers told them otherwise.

Cr12Mov is the Chinese equivalent of D2 steel, but manufacturers won't tell you that or are they're unscrupulous. Good American or German D2 steel has been around since World War Two and holds an edge well if PROPERLY heat treated. Most Chi-Com suppliers don't care about that or most U.S. manufacturers. You can't differentially heat treat it either. Bob Dozier developed a very good heat treat for D2 around 61-62 hrc. D2 and equivalents are made by most major steel manufacturers. There's an old saying about D2 "It takes a bad edge and holds it forever."

In defense of D2: it replaced the older budget steel of Aus8 or it's Chinese equivalent. D2 has been used in industrial applications since 1918 and we have figured out basically all the issues with making high chromium, high carbon steel in the last century. In 2024 D2 might be the budget steel and might never be the 'new hot thing' like magnacut or CPM154 but for what it is and does and what your average person uses knives for, you can get a lifelong use knife for under 50 bucks. Yes, I am a bit of a knife nerd. D2 is what I carry in my pocket every day. It works, and works well.
