OK if I’m being super picky, the instructional video is a little too sales pitchy, this is the elixir of the gods, it can do anything and it’s fool proof etc. but - - - he’s basically right. I used Odie’s on a couple of restoration projects of late, and I can’t for the life of me now understand how come someone didn’t figure this out sooner. This is by far and away the best hand rubbed finish you could apply to any project. And for many reasons. And I’m an old danish oil, and Maloof mixture, hand wax, and even shellac guy. Occasionally lacquer. This stuff is the real deal.

Hi. What grit do you sand the wood to before applying the odies oil?
@Odiesoil Жыл бұрын
With our finishes there are no sanding restrictions or limitations! The sheen is primarily dictated by the sanding. The higher you sand, the higher the sheen. 180-320 for matte to low satin sheen, 400-600 for satin to medium/ medium high sheen 800+ for high sheen. You can also build upon sheen, depth and lustre with additional coats.
@TzufFamilyBand Жыл бұрын
Hi. I have some questions I was hoping you could help with 1)What is the minimum dry time for a table? We want to renew our dining room table, but don’t have a week to wait for it to dry. What would you say is the minimum time to wait for use, and perhaps the precautions to keep in mind while using until it’s fully cured? 2) can you help me calculate how much odies oil I need for a table that is 1.4meters x 1.4 meters. 3) is it best to put two coats for a table? If so, how much do you reccomend in between coats? 4) I have a finishing wax called deylina wax. How much time do you reccomend waiting in before waxing? Thank you 😊
@Odiesoil Жыл бұрын
@@TzufFamilyBand we typically recommend 3-5 days cure time before being subjected to standing liquids. The table can be ready for light duty use the next day otherwise but it’s best to tread lightly. These minimum recommendations would apply to any finish. Once the applicator pad is saturated with Odie’s Oil you’ll get approximately 22+ Sq ft of coverage per ounce of oil on hardwoods like oak, cherry, walnut, maple…. One properly applied coat of Odie’s Oil is all that’s needed for protection and durability. The only thing better then one coat of Odie’s is two coats! With additional coats you will micro build upon the finish adding a little more sheen, depth, lustre and that silky smooth feel. We do not recommend using any other non Odie’s brand of finish or wax over Odie’s as we cannot guarantee a proper bond or performance. If looking to add a wax coat, we recommend Odie’s wax. We would recommend waiting 3-5 days before applying the wax.

I’ve got two tables made of parawood. Going to sand it smooth before applying any finish…not sure we want to stain it. Any special instructions needed for this kind of wood?
@OdiesoilАй бұрын
No special instructions. If you are going to add a pigment we would recommend not sanding too high as it may inhibit the colour saturation. 150-200 will be adequate. It’s always advised to run some tests on a scrap piece of wood to verify results. If you are finishing with just the straight oil, your sheen is primarily dictated by the sanding. The higher you sand, the higher the sheen.

@Odiesoil Жыл бұрын
Hi! Thanks for choosing Odie’s to finish your table! The underside of the table is typically fine with just the one coat but it wouldn’t hurt to apply another light coat to make sure it is all sealed up equally to the topside. It’s important to make sure both side are equally sealed to prevent any difference in moisture gain and loss. This will ensure wood movement will be kept to a minimum and help prevent any warping and cupping.

@Odiesoil3 ай бұрын
The blotchy look is given by the product left on the surface, probably it was applied to much and not removed completely. You want to use very little oil and buff off completely until there is nothing remaining, a cotton terry towel works best at achieving this. To fix, apply a very small amount of oil back to the surface, using a non-woven pad. Scrub the surface well with the mindset that you’re trying to reactivate the oil on the surface. Buff off immediately until it is completely dry to touch (you can work in sections)!

You do want to get the wood to the point of full saturation (to where no more oil will be accepted) for soft woods, old dry wood, or punky wood it’s best to do multiple light coats with a day between coats until the wood becomes fully saturated. It’s still important to do a proper buff off after every application to ensure any excess or residual oil on the surface gets removed.

We typically recommend choosing a pad rated just higher then your last sanding grit as the slight abrasiveness does have its benefits. Our pads are as follows. Maroon pad-rated 240-360, Ultra fine grey pad-rated 400-600, Micro fine grey pad-rated 800-1000, white pad-rated non abrasive.

what grit would you take red cedar to and what coresponding pad colour?
@Odiesoil Жыл бұрын
You can sand to any grit! There are no sanding restrictions with Odie’s. It really all depends on the look and feel you want. The higher you sand the more refined the surface and it will be the basic dictation of sheen, the higher you sand, the higher the sheen. When choosing a pad, you typically want to choose one rated just higher than your last sanding grit.
@Boom-oq5yj2 жыл бұрын
Is the 2500 grit pad essential? These are hard to find. Also you were clear about not putting too much but then didn't measure it out when you spread. Were you eyeballing the amount you applied in this example?
@Odiesoil2 жыл бұрын
We do recommend using a non-woven pad rated equal to or just higher than your last sanding grit. They are always available on our website! If you are new to Odie's then measuring it out by volume is a great way to get used to being accustomed to how much you need. Once you are more familiar, then eyeballing will be perfectly fine.

What kind of protection does this finish provide? ie: Is it okay for wet glasses on a table, etc. Also, how do you handle porous woods?
@Odiesoil5 жыл бұрын
After the full cure time, it is completely waterproof! It is also stain resistant, provides UV protection, stabilizes the wood, and more. Odie's works great on all species of wood, porous or not.
@jeepersmurphy25702 жыл бұрын
@Running Red Fox Use your intuition. If you're using a low to no building finish like these oil/hardwax products, porous woods are better used with a pore filler. If you're just slapping lacquer or poly, just let er rip if that's your style. Price is what you pay and value is what you get. Doesn't get much better value than these simple to use oil/hardwax finishes.

There is no stain on this table. If using a stain you just want to make sure it is dry before applying the oil. This could vary depending on the stain and drying conditions. Anywhere from a few hours to a few days.

Yes, it can. Odie’s will cross link and molecularly bond to a great variety of mediums including other finishes. The downfall to using Odie’s over other finishes, even though Odie’s can help repair and rejuvenate them, is that those existing finishes are the barriers between the true cross link and molecular bond with Odie’s and the medium itself and that existing finish will be the weak link.

There are three different ways to clean things that are finished with Odie’s products: You can mix 1 part vinegar with 10 parts water and clean with a terry cotton cloth You can use soapy water (like Dawn dish soap), but remember to rinse all the suds off, and then wipe it dry Or you can make your own cleaner using Odie’s cleaning concentrate. To do this you can make a mixture, mix 2% of Odie's Cleaner Concentrate with 98% water in a spray bottle. Just spray and wipe. This will clean, refresh your finish. Start using this mixture after is fully cured. Start cleaning your cabinets after are fully cured for 2 weeks

@@Odiesoil Is this finish as hard as a polyurethane? How well will this product wear with a home with dogs?
@Odiesoil5 жыл бұрын
Joyce Thomma please watch our videos to learn more about how Odie’s works. Odie’s oil finishes are totally different from polyurethane, our oils molecularly bond with the wood and will offer depth, stability, and protection to the wood. Odie’s will outperform any polyurethane on the market, as per dogs- it’s inevitable that polyurethane will scratch and poly is virtually impossible to repair. as per using Odie’s... Odie’s will harden in the surface and reduce scratching, but when scratched repairs are simple....you will be able to spot repair

Anyone use a 6 inch buffer with Odie's? I've been applying to Tigerwood with gray scotch by hand but it's taking more oil and way more elbow grease than in the videos. The Tigerwood seems way more porous than Walnut so it's not stretching as far.
@Odiesoil2 жыл бұрын
Real Tiger wood is a fairly dense hardwood with a Janka Hardness of approximately 2170. You should be getting close to the same coverage as in the video, but slightly less, also your sanding level will have a factor in the coverage. You can apply the oil mechanically, just be sure not to use to much, and more importantly, be sure to buff off any and all excess oil until dry to touch.

What about adding a ceramic coating?
@Odiesoil Жыл бұрын
We do not advocate the use of any ceramic coating as they contain harmful and dangerous substances. Beyond that, we do not recommend the use of any other finish to be applied over an Odie’s finish as we cannot guarantee a proper bond. A properly applied Odie’s finish will withstand much abuse and is very easily maintained if and when needed. We would recommend to read our blog posts on our website for more information.

Started woodworking less than two years ago. All I have to say is, where’ve you been all my life? Oldie’s checks off every box for what I’m looking for in a finish (seriously, I’m not being paid to say this). I needed a food safe finish that 1)doesn’t go rancid 2) I don’t have to worry about a person having allergies, and where food safe isn’t a necessity provides 3) protection against water 4) is UV resistant (so my projects done in cedar won’t fade). I thought I was going to have to figure out at least 3 primary finishes to always have in my arsenal in order to meet the necessary criteria for different projects. So, this will basically be the only finish I foresee using from now on, unless someone requests otherwise. One question, if this is the right venue: for things such as cooking spoons, how often does Odie’s need to be reapplies? Just wondering if I should continue sending a single use bit of oil to my customers with their purchase (this expense is out of my pocket because that’s how much I want my customers to have a good experience. Cuz that’s what it’s all about, sharing the beauty of our work).
@Odiesoil3 жыл бұрын
Hello, your feedback made out our day. The regular works great on wood spoons, bowls, charcuterie ecc, in this case just apply 2 coats of the oil and let it fully cure for 2 weeks before you expose it to liquids (3 weeks for walnut), it has to be re applied only when is need it
