It's not that they have bigger issues, it's that there is a lot of competition. £330 - I could put that towards a Steam Deck OLED, or even a Switch OLED. Both of which will be far better. The ONLY issue with this device is that once you go past the Early Bird prices, the Portal becomes as expensive as a Steam Deck, which will play everything that this thing plays and more with the exception of Android games. The Portal does have a far-superior screen and D-Pad to the Deck, but the Deck is infinitely more customizable and comes with its own case. Not to mention there's a massive Deck community if anything goes awry with it.
@sillydude1712 күн бұрын
Curious what country you're from? I keep seeing this parroted but can't see it in the numbers for myself. I ordered a portal + some extras + shipping and I would STILL have to put down an extra near $300 aud to get an oled deck. Looking at ebay right now and I'm not sure I could even get a used lcd deck for the same price. "Plays everything" is fun to say, but feels like an empty point when the conversation really should be gaming natively vs. streaming. I can play AAA games at med-low settings at the beach on a deck or I can just stream everything at home using apollo&artemis on the portal.
@mrAPchem12 күн бұрын
@@sillydude17 I'm in America. A brand-new OG Steam Deck can be bought from Valve for $399. The Portal 2 Pro is also $399 according to the AYN website, but that's only for right now. Once the Early-bird pricing goes away, those prices will rise dramatically. As a matter of fact, the Portal 2 Pro will wind up being virtually the same price as the 512 GB Steam Deck OLED ($539 vs. $549). The Steam Deck will play ALL the same games that the Portal 2 will with the exception of Android games and then play the vast majority of the PC library out there. The Portal 2 will not. And they are virtually the same price. That is not a small deal or an empty point, especially for people that want to play their games on the go - not tethered to their home. As far as streaming goes, spending $399 for a portable device merely to stream with it when you could buy a Logitech G-Cloud for half the price - or use a device that you already have sounds too much like ice-skating uphill. I mean, people can do what they wish with their money and their devices, but everything that you said about the Portal 2 is just as true for the Deck - and the Deck can play many of those titles anywhere else that you are. If this device was $250, it'd be a no-brainer to recommend to people over both the Deck and the Retroid Pocket 5. But both of those devices punch far above their weight class for the money compared to the Portal 2, even though the Portal 2 is still amazing at its job. The Portal 2 should really only be purchased if a person needs the very best Switch/Wii U/PS2/PS3 performance on an Android device, must have the best 7-inch panel out there or wants a large screen device. But for the money, it's still not beating the Steam Deck.

Handheld PC's have entirely killed any of these larger android devices for me, I don't mind if the Handheld PC is 50% larger, still fits in a bag easily. I LOVE my ROG Ally. I do still think tiny ones like the the vertical Ambernic handhelds are neat, pocket sized stuff. I'd rather spend the money I'd spend on this device on a better phone I can chuck a Backbone on if I wanted to play some light gaming.

Also, you may not have had a budget phone, but the Google chip in that 7a is barely supported vs a snapdragon in emulation, the odin 2 can play basically all of the ps2 library really well.

You know what bothers me of these android gaming handhelds is that to get the most out of these gaming handhelds is that you need to set up emulators etc to be able to get as much from your investment as possible,but for some people out there who thinks they can buy this and play tons of great quality games will sorely be disappointed to know that android games will be a complete waste of time.
@clblanchard0812 күн бұрын
Most people buying stuff like this already know what they’re getting into. We can’t dumb down every product so much that mouth breather Joe only has to hit the power button and be immediately satisfied. That thought process completely ruins innovation and makes every one suffer for the idiots.
@FaeezHendricks11 күн бұрын
@@clblanchard08 I totally get what you are saying, but the reality is that this is an android device essentially geared towards android gaming first and foremost. Emulation is where you get the most value out of this device and that is a no brainer, but if you look at the value of the device solely based on just android gaming then its a complete waste cause android gaming is just bad. A very few odd ones are ok, but not worth investing this type of money. Another point is that they will eventually need to change the way these handhelds are built to accommodate a wider audience because they need to improve on sales. They will eventually hit a cap because they are not really catering for a wider audience. Purely thinking about a business that wants to increase profits and value of the company itself. Also it doesn't have to ruin innovation at all to cater to a wider audience. I would agree on the ruining of innovation based on the types of games being developed vs what was created about 10 years ago. Most developers makes games simpler to accommodate more people so that I can understand stifles innovation to an extent. It still doesn't have to though.

The point of this IS emulation dude. Are you OK?
@FaeezHendricks10 күн бұрын
@@marcusborderlands6177 I know the point of the channel forms part of emulation and yes I am ok. You are missing the point of my comments and I mentioned it in my previous comments that I know to get the most value out of these devices is emulation. I have my own devices I use for emulation, but the core build of some of these devices are Android systems and if you take them exactly for what they were built on which is Android then it's not worth it the money because android in itself is so limited on it's own. Again I have said it in my previous comments that if you are some of the few who knows how to set this up for emulation you would get far better value from it even though it wasn't ever truly designed from the ground up for emulation. Meaning you need to be knowledgable about downloading and setting up emulation. Finding roms, iso files etc. it takes lots of time to get set up and the average consumer is never prepared for that. Again if you look at the company to gain more profits they will eventually hit a ceiling cause they will only be catering to a specific audience and it's the ones who are more technically savvy from emulation builds and set ups etc. So yes, I am ok. Read again next time. Maybe slower so that you don't miss key points I'm making.

There has been an absurd amount of handheld in the first 14 days of January 2025.

I don’t see much appeal since my phone can do everything it offers and some. This might be ideal for those with extra cash and no idea where to spend it. As for me, the Steam Deck covers all my gaming needs-for now.

I refuse to buy ANY handheld until we can emulate PS3 directly on android.
@treyhay454312 күн бұрын
@JonathanTroth413 Right! At this point it's going to be diminishing returns. Switch emulation is dead -- Nintendo made sure of that-- and no PS3 emulation. These handheld companies make these devices in hopes that someone will make an emulator. It's no guarantee that someone will make PS3 emulation and Switch emulation for Android

AYN should definitely update this to the Snapdragon 8 Elite later this year, and then I would love to see a larger version with an 8" 1600p 144hz OLED screen. (Since the Legion Go 2 is now rumored to be moving down to 1200p I'm going to say every other handheld in existence needs a 1600p OLED screen.)
@chriswright807412 күн бұрын
Nope it's way to expensive
@soragranda12 күн бұрын
Hopefully they do upgrade it to the 8 elite, that chip has full Linux driver support, they will squeeze so much compatibility and performance.
@Cujobob12 күн бұрын
There is a price advantage to getting older chips. If you want newer stuff, you’re paying X86 prices. While there are still some advantages, that puts them in a different position where the volume of sales would decrease.
@harrydavey988412 күн бұрын
Really, the Steam Deck is like 800p and it's fine. I don't see why these handhelds need to be such insane resolutions. The screens are so small, you genuinely can't tell the difference anyway.
@Cujobob12 күн бұрын
@ part of the problem with screens is that there are only so many options available. When you’re not a giant company, you’re not getting screens custom made for you with the newest technology. You’re buying what’s available. If you want OLED, there are fewer options for size and specs. They have to build around what’s available.
@BoomerCosmo11 күн бұрын
hahah good old days of that being the standard.

Also, it doesn't matter if you have a stronger chip if developers aren't making the emulators.
@soragranda12 күн бұрын
@treyhay4543 True, but that is why it matters that 8 elite have FULL Linux drivers support, people already run rpsc3 (ps3 emulator) via container (thermux) on a 8 elite phone, 30fps 720p, running really good.

128 GB is not enough for an android device in 2025; 256 GB should be the minimum... Although, I think at this price, I would prefer to get a used Steam Deck with LCD.
