The Ayn Odin 2 Max and Pro are the most powerful retro handhelds that I've ever used. This Android based portable can play GameCube and PlayStation 2 VERY well, and even handle a surprising amount of Nintendo Switch games.

I think the only appealing aspect of having a console like this that can also do switch is that you don't have to mod a switch to do similar; and I feel like game wise, you'd want to do it to be able to run modded or hacked games. Animal Crossing is one good example with a pretty good modding scene, but Pokemon Brilliant Diamond and Shining Pearl has an amazing one. Because it was created in Unity, fans have been able to do all kinds of stuff to the game from fixing following pokemon, bugs, and removing the chibi-artstyle, to adding in every single pokemon across every generation including Scarlet and Violet, and adding back stuff like Mega Evolutions (as well as silly stuff like "play as kirby"). It's very cool to have that as something you can turn and play on the go... (but also kind of sad the game couldn't do all this stuff already). It really seems like Pokemon BDSP is going to become the future Pokemon Fire Red in terms of creating hacked games and fan projects.

I will say one thing: Switch emulation can be popular because it allows people to apply mods to their games! To do that on an actual Switch, you either need a very, very early iteration of the Switch for a physical exploit, or to pay out the nose to add a modchip.

The 8gb model will do just fine, the switch only has 4gb of ram. I bought the 8gb. Save yourself some money you'll never use the 12gb of ram or 16, it's not a Ryzen or an Intel, and it's never going to play AAA games that would use the extra ram. PS3 has 256mb so even if this thing could pull off PS3 emulation there is still PLENTY of ram. It's the same hardware minus the ram and the internal space. Don't waste the money on it.

What's kind of being neglected in terms of information about this device is that the 450 something dollar model comes with 512 gigabytes of storage and a micro SD card slot. This has all the internals of Galaxy s23 Ultra minus camera and phone for damn near $800 less... For an Android device that is pretty damn impressive 512 GB of storage 16 GB of RAM and a snapdragon 8 gen 2.. All things that you cannot find together in a device around $450

Totally on board with the Switch emulation thoughts. When I was in school I totally would have been tweaking on it for hours "because I can" even if I had a Switch. But now that I'm in my 30s and have too much stuff to do, I just want to play games and not waste time screwing around making things work. I pretty much play all Nintendo games on real Nintendo hardware because everything else so far is a compromise. A real Switch just works, and everything I've seen/tried so far for DS emulation is so much worse than just using a DS. I do have some of my PS2 and GameCube collection on my Steam Deck for convenience and if I don't want to go to the TV. Something like this would be cool for something smaller and lighter, and way longer battery life if you're not planning on playing bigger PC games on the go.

At 53 years old, I'm a novice when it comes to emulation. I have a couple of Anbernic devices and had ordered an Odin 2 pro. I cancelled my order not because of the price, but because I wasn't sure if I would have a device that would do what I wanted to do. Which is retro emulation and Android games. A dedicated android device just for game is appealing to me. I ended up woth the Retroid Pocket 3+. It's the perfect device for learning emulation. Im just disappointed that it says Diablo Immortal isn't compatible with my device. I am still looking to get an Odin 2. I think it's a great device overall.

@@pistolao_vr Who's going to game on a handheld for more than a 2 to 3 hour session anyway? The Steam Deck gets anywhere from 3-7 hours of battery life whenever emulating games (dependant on emulator). It's not exactly what I class as being an insufficient amount for most people. Hell, access to being able to play AAA PC games, having a fully functional PC and being able to play 80% of Switch games fairly flawlessly on the Steam Deck (far more so than on the Odin), is in itself probably worth paying out an extra $150-$200 for those privileges. However, the fact that the 256GB LCD Steam Deck can now be picked up for £100 less than the Aya Odin 2 here in the UK, just turns the whole decision, into an instant "no brainer". Hell, you could even pick up a Retroid Pocket 2S alongside that Steam Deck and still come in under the £450 price of a Aya Odin 2. The Odin 2 is just too expensive for what it is. If it was a £250 - £300 handheld, then it would be one hell of a good deal and likely a must buy. However at £450 it just gets outclassed and bitch slapped by both the Steam Deck and the Z1 Ally, which are both in the same ballpark on price. BTW, I've also got a feeling the Retroid Pocket 4 Pro due out next month for $200, will make the Odin 2 look terrible in comparison (around 75% it's performance for well under half the cost)

The point this review is missing when comparing the Odin to a Steam Deck or other X86-handheld ist battery life and portability. The odin 2 weighs 35% less than the Steam Deck, is way smaller and has much better battery life. Hall-Effect sticks come on top. Switch emulation on Android is still in its infancy but the fact that as of writing the Odin 2 can handle Mario Kart, Mario Odyssey, Animal Crossing and basically any Indie Game flawlessly is remarkable. in a year or so it will basically be an adequate replacement for a switch. Without stick drift. The max variant of the Odin is too expensive, indeed, the pro model for 369 bucks might be the best deal in tech for emulation fans right now. By the way I love RetroGameCorps;-)

@@Carcosahead The way I look at it, the Steam Deck is more of a gaming PC alternative than anything else. The battery life isn't that great and the thing is big and loud. I don't see it as particularly practical for on the go gaming. It is more powerful though and will play "modern" PC games. It's more suited to gaming on the couch or somewhere like a hotel room or a relative's house. The Odin on the other hand is smaller, quieter, and has a better battery life. In my opinion, it's right on the edge of practicality for gaming on the go. It's large, but still small enough that it's not a chore to take it with you when you're on the go. It's perfect if you just want to play some N64 or Gamecube games while you're out of the house. It just depends on what you want. Personally, I wish I could get something with the power of the Odin 2, but in the footprint of a 3DS XL. Something you could reasonably fit in your pocket. I don't think that's going to happen anytime soon though, so I might just pick up the Odin 2 or the pro version.

I am not interested in Switch emulation, and that's even a tricky matter for a lot of reasons... I totally agree: if you want to play Switch games, just buy a Switch. But I definitely love the idea of upscaling PS2 and NGC games, and even use a handheld as a console to plug to TV: that's the main reason why I would consider an Odin2 (and also because it seems great with controls and ergonomics). However, I totally agree: price is an issue, and there's the Steam Deck just at the corner. Having something slightly less powerful, just to have 1080p PS2 without Switch emulation, around 250$ maybe, and in a smaller form factor, is what I would seriously consider (Retroid Pocket 4 hopefully).

The Switch lacking game saves on the carts themselves or offering a way to put saves onto an SD card is enough reason alone for me to dump and play my Switch on devices like my Steam Deck. I can go between an amazing upscaled higher FPS game with mods to remove dynamic scaling or blur on my desktop or laptop and then play it on the PC handhelds with an experience similar if not better than the switch hardware and it's super easy to manage your saves. I just picked up a copy of Dragon Quest Monsters The Dark Prince and it says "Does not support cloud saves" on the back of it. A title released like a week ago?!??!

There’s a few games that don’t support cloud saves. All the main Pokémon switch games among them. I’m assuming in part to prevent the ability to dupe monster by trading, closing software, restoring from cloud. It’s frustrating that this was two companies solution to prevent duping in their monster collection games. Especially when you might actually need to restore a save for any legitimate reason.

I'd love an Odin 2 but I have so many handheld devices today including an Analogue Pocket, Steam Deck, and various others. Plus I just bought the Odin Lite about a year ago. Just can't justify the cost as much as I'd love to have one. I also have a Razer Kishi V2 and a Galaxy S23 Ultra phone that will perform better than the Edge.

Would you say the Odin 2 is worth it if I wanted to use this as a purely emulation device & on rare occassion PS app streaming? I was always interested in getting an Odin but I skipped out on it and got a Steam Deck. Fast forward to months ago and I had sold all of my consoles and games. I do still want a PS5 and Steam Deck OLED sometime this year but to preserve space on my Steam Deck I want a powerful and separate handheld purely for emulation so I don't have to waste space on Deck for that. I want to use PS5 for main AAA games, Steam Deck for pc games and indies and a handheld for emulation. My favorites to emulate are Gameboy Advance, SNES, PS2, Gamecube, and Switch. Also would 12gb of ram suffice or is 16 needed?

@@-Crustyboi- I bought Odin2 for a month and a half. I'm freaking love it. I use it every day mainly to play switch games and PS2, NGC games with HD textures. Also streams from work back to my PS4pro and PC at home. Odin2 covered the emulation of all retro consoles up to Wii and partial switch games. Some heavy switch games doesn't have good performance at this moment on android. You may have to check it yourself. I think the main difference from other handhelds is the Odin2 can upgrade the gaming experience decently and more premium. The grip and is comfortable. The portable size and weight are acceptable. A playable game is not enough for me. I can run it with 3xRes + HD texture, speed up the games. I can still play games while transferring 10GB files from PC via wifi ftp. I didn't tried a pro version. But the advantages of having 16gb RAM is running any high demand apps stable and do multitask smoothly. I can't upgrade the RAM from 12gb if I found the problem is because of not enough RAM.

13:00 but it's not $460 because you don't need the max version or the pro version because 8 GB of RAM is plenty so it's $300. And I don't need to pay Nintendo $60 for every single game that I want regardless of how much time is past since it was released

Downvote for clickbait. YT love claiming Switch emulation is so much better but 99% of the time its somewhere between objectively worse to a complete joke. My SteamDeck OLED does better than this thing, and even Deck OLED is on average a worse experience than native. There are exceptions but generally speaking, the games it emulates well are already running 60fps on Switch like Metroid Dread and Mario Odyssey or Wonder. If you ACTUALLY had a device that ACTUALLY emulated Switch games better, Id be interested. But Im so tired of ppl talking up Switch emulation on devices, then you do some real research and learn not one single game runs better than native without having hitches or bugs or crashes or framerate anomolies. Its become a hustle for YT.

16:58 that's because you don't need 16 gigs of RAM to emulate a PS2. The PlayStation 2 had a whopping 32 megabytes of RAM. You only need enough RAM to run the operating system and the emulator so they're playing off people's stupidity and fomo to make more money which is funny. The standard for computers right now is 16 gigs of RAM and so people think everything needs 16 gigs of RAM and the manufacturers don't feel like arguing with them. Lol

Well, thank you. I really wanted to know the power of this console because I want to buy it. I don't really know that much about emulation, I have dabbled. I'm emulating things on my computer once. And that was the only the only Game that I have Played was mobile emulated, call a duty mobile. I don't know how to set up emulation games. And yeah, I'm mainly getting it for 2 reasons. One super powerful, another 1 is I get 2. Actually 3 reasons. Another one is I get to play all my games. I like to play on my phone. On that console with an actual controller and another reason is Streaming, I'm a fan of streaming. I pay for every streaming service, so this console is something that I want for a stream. Yes, you don't need the greatest hardware for streaming, but because of g force now. You kinda need to have your console running in 4k Or whatever you're trying to play defourth, now on if it doesn't support 4K, you will only get 1080P to play energ Force now game, and I pay for the ultimate here, so I want a handheld that has the ultimate capabilities 4K a 120 Hz, but yeah, I am excited? I thought I'd never get to play these old names again after he said about emulating games. I'm going to look for emulators when I buy this console. Cause me and my buddy, he wants to buy A. Wee because he wants to play all the old wii games. But I think because we live close to each other or we did, I don't live anywhere closer now. I think he could buy it this console. I'll learn how to set up emulated games and set it up for him. And I'll set up for myself so we can play old school games together, but like back in the day when we used to play, I remember after school, I used to rush to his house to play the new games that came out for the three sixty for the new games that came out for the wee
