I love my Odin 2 - it turned out that whenever im traveling to another city, i take it with myself (instead of Steam Deck, Aya Neo Geek 1S). The battery is just so great. With Windows handhelds I have "battery anxiety". For Odin 2 Portal I plan to have it as ultimate streaming device - both local (from PC) and online. Also, sometimes 6 inch screen of Odin 2 was too small for some Switch games. And yea, OLED screen - PC Engine shmups will look fantastic there :) ps. I'm glad I preordered it some time ago.

Been playing my RP5 lately remote play from my Series X and I realised these handhelds are an amazing portal to beefier hardware! This really is the future eliminates all the issues I have with handheld pc gaming. Can even pop 360 disks into my series x play them 1080p on my RP5 🎉

@TheJamtarts1 all around in this context meant overall, price you pay for what you get, good screen good battery life same performance and a little more portable. Doesn't mean the portal is objectively worse, just that the Odin 2 is still a better "conscious" choice.

@@ronaldomanzoli3964 Fair enough but as someone who the Portal will be their first Retro handheld, I think the Portal looks a lot better than the older Odin 2. It's also a similar price brand new (as long as you got one of the super-fan or early bird deal's). For me the Screen is the most important part of a handheld and the Portal screen is night and day better. I can't see how anyone could see the older Odin 2 as the better purchase even if it's slightly cheaper.

Great video. Glad to see better compatibility here than on the EVO. I hope they can figure out the screen issues. My other big question mark on this one is how it will feel and if the tpu ergo case will be good. They said the device travel case won't fit the grip so it is a bit annoying I'd have to take it on and off to use it/carry it around.

Thanks for the video, I didn't know you had an EVO on hand hard to say right now without the final version but knowing previous AYN products and where the Portal will most likely land which do you prefer? Have an Odin 2 mini pro but have a retro power EVO and DMG on order, bounced between ordering the EVO or the Portal so many times but went EVO in the end primarily based on comfort thoughts and full size sticks more than anything, the Portal will have to wait for me feeling a tad bankrupt :) Thanks again for the video know allot of folks been waiting on this one.

I would also like to know if you noticed a difference in the size of the A,B,X,Y buttons in relation to the standard ODIN 2 in the video, I was unsure if they were the same size

Rob , having taken apart this and the retro pocket 5... Snapdragon version aside, how similar are the internals? Do you think it's one manufacturer making these?

They do share the same parent company (Moorechip) but both Retroid and AYN hate being compared to each other. 😅😅 The interesting thing about the RP5 is that it's stamped Moorechip whereas this Portal sample just says AYN.

@retrotechdad the device is a prototype so production units may be different. I replaced the rear backplate with a clear one and as I saw your teardown of the Portal I saw many similarities. Going back to your RP5 teardown, the basic design of these units look .. well identical. Thanks for the clarification! 😊

I'm actually working on something for all of the Odin 2 devices! For Blur, did you change the in-game settings? You can try dropping the resolution for the shortcut to 960 x 544 and see if that helps! 🙏

Even though we knew the specs . I'm disappointed we didn't get an m.2 capability and a gen 3 or elite option. Given this it's hard to warrant an upgrade from Odin 2 pro with only a screen upgrade. But it does seem good if you don't already have an odin 2

The move to Gen 3 would be nice but I suspect it helps keep costs down. The Elite right now despite being a powerhouse lacks the driver maturity/support so lots of high-end stuff doesn't work at all or fares worse than Gen 2/3. 🙏

This and the evo share the exact same screen. My rp5 is amazing, this is pretty much made by the same company that made the rp5 so think of that but 1.5 inches bigger

You became a fan of the Ayn joysticks!?!?! Clearly you're not playing anything but retro games. Any FPS game or game streaming with modern games is going to be a GARBAGE experience because of those Ayn switch style sticks. The Ayn sticks have absolutely terrible sensors in them. They are super flicky and tend to snap to the cardinal directions. It's technically a true analog stick but in practice it's just not sensitive enough for playing modern games. This is just a fact. The EVO has a lot of issues. QC issues, I'm having to send mine back to get it repaired. And we're still waiting for the chipset to be recognized by many android apps. But tbh, the downsides are completely made up for by the incredible full size joysticks. I would have 100% bought an Ayn Portal if they had used decent sticks. I'm blown away they didn't take the massive amount of feedback regarding the garbage sticks they use. I must have sent them 10 emails about this... Sticks are SOOO important. And the EVO not only has good full sized joysticks, these are legit some of the BEST most accurate joysticks I've ever seen on ANY controller and I own most of the high end controllers on the market. If you want a game streaming device or you play a lot of android games that use analog sticks such as COD Mobile or warzone, You're gonna want to go with the EVO. The experience you're going to get with the EVO is just so vastly superior. And for FPS games, don't even bother with the Ayn device those sticks just cannot aim precicely no matter how hard you try. The EVO on the other hand has incredible super precice aim control. Once Ayaneo hammers out some of the software issues and you get everything dialed in, it's the way to go for modern gaming. If you don't care about modern gaming you def would prolly want to go with the Portal, simply for the price savings, superior QC and (I'm not sure about this on the portal) ayn makes their devices very repairable. With my EVO, I have Geforce now Ultimate and I got a wifi 7 mesh, I can stream over 2000 modern games such as Black Myth Wukong, Space marine 2, Warzone, etc at 120 fps and virtually no latency. My ping sits at 10-13 locked with 1gbps fiber connection and tri-band wifi 7. My Evo is basically a 4080 PC!!! I can play AAA games from my steam account, gamepass, and ubisoft connect (plus a few others from epic store and gog like cyberpunk), at max settings at up to 120fps! ALL DAY LONG WITHOUT CHARGING!!! The EVO is something special because of these sticks trust me.

It can be seen that many materials are made of old Odin, which can save a lot of costs. Looking at the comparison picture, the handle can be designed to be thicker, not only for better feel but also for accommodating a large joystick. But it's not supposed to be done for cost, and the grip cover has to be bought separately😢

I like them a lot more than the usual Switch sticks. Ginfull sticks are quite good for their size and a big improvement over what we've seen in the space prior which is why we are seeing more use them including Anbernic. FWIW, AYN did raise the height on the sticks with the Portal to give them larger range and with a larger stick cap, they are quite solid. I do have an EVO in-hand and I absolutely love the sticks on it, which I talk briefly about in the comparison section. 🙏

Yeah,i originally wanted the portal max, but then seeing that the differences is only on the screen and internal storage. I figured that since the lortal is noe their main focus, it was only a matter of time till the regular odin 2 gets discounted; and sure as hell it did! I got an odin 2 and everything for it for just about $500 (got the super dock, the travel case and sfreen protector for free and with fastest shipping) and yeah,definitely dont regret my purchase The portal is beautiful, but my main fear is screen burn and since the front is all glass,one bad crack/scratch,its over
