Ah yes... pretty much the exact experience I've had every time I've opened Blender as well... But yeah the baton looks great I can imagine the foam version might be even easier to make, but this one probably has a bit more heft to it so that its weighted to feel more baton-like. (I guess you could also just add weight to a foam one but this is already done.)

For the wood finish on the PVC pipe, I did one that looks REALLY close to wood for a Grim Reaper scythe in my Halloween video last year. I did flat black spray paint, then used acrylics. Dry brushed dark brown so it wasn't a full coating, then dry brushed medium brown, then light brown. And each color I used less and less. So more dark brown on the brush than medium, and more medium than light. And only went up the length so give it brush strokes in that direction only to give it a grain look.

After you adjust all those things at the start when you open blender, you can actually save those defaults and whatever is in your current scene becomes the new program default. I built a cube the exact size of my print volume with my buildplate that shows up every time it opens.

I love this, also, as far as painting PVC black, you can use plastidip, you just need to sand the PVC first, as far as how ultra durable that finish is, I'm not sure, but I used it on a blaster I made and it's still holding up really well, and you're not dealing with the death in a can that is vinyl spray paint, respirator still required though
