KZbin seems to make comments lost 😞. I was answering Jouta Vainen and the comment just vanished when i answered. The question was: Is there a Sami connection in regard to Odins name? Interesting question, because if the name Odin doesn't come from Wodan there might be a Sami connection. It was only in the 11th century that Adam von Bremen connected these 2 names.

oh, thank you for answering.. it was me, i thought i was intruding :) there is a lot of german and baltic influence in the finnic languages, but sometimes it can also go the other way round (or that it can be IE words that simply came from another route). in finnish the verb odottaa means to wait, so with the same logic od-in would mean to wait for air, which could be either storm or child being born (soul connection again there). in sami it´s a much bigger patch of words (most have to do with future, why i´ve grouped them under predicting and future magic, in my own personal studies). of course they can also be completely unrelated (short words like that always have several different origins).

now that i thought about it it might actually have more to do with the word otava (big dipper). because the opposite words (for past) seem to be related to one of the sami words for moon (manno). so i would say that they are more likely related to the passage of time (future and past). unless the germanic gods also live on the sky they might not be related at all :) i have to study it more, but it is an interesting pairing of words for sure.

I think Odin comes directly from Woden name,north Germanic usually removed the “w” like “Wulf” in west germanic and “ulfr” in north Germanic Wođanaz=proto Germanic Wodan=proto West Germanic Ođinn=proto Norse

Die had ik nog nooit gehoord. Maar hij heeft ook een nummer dat 'Heksensabbat' heet dus ik denk dat Boudewijn de Groot wel van Wodan heeft gehoord :-). Ja, de energie veranderd zeker wel eind november/begin december. Ik merk dan een soort verstilling en vanaf januari of februari komt er meer wind of zelfs storm. Fijn dat we hier in Noordwest-Europa seizoenen hebben.
