I really don't think spartans were ever meant to hold the line, but they do excel at that when they are told to.
@danielefabbro8229 ай бұрын
@@johnhalo-ug4go hold the line? No, of course not, while they can, they were meant to break enemy lines. Historically speaking, defense have stopped to be reliable since the invention of gunpowder weapons. From that point further, the best "defense" was attack. The best way to avoid enemy bullets was that of being mobile, tactile, evasive. Making the enemy miss the target. Otherwise every hit is a lethal hit. And that's valid also on the greater scheme. You can afford the luxury of losing a line, a city, a planet. It will reduce your military power. A factory less that was producing weapons, less workforce, less economic power and so on. Spartans was intended to hit enemy in that way, striking and obliterating enemy key assets in order to cripple their chance to sustain a war. If the enemy can craft guns, they can't shoot at you. Spartans was made to attack, as like the whole UNSC military. If the UNSC has lost so much in the war, it was due to the fact that they had no maps about Covenant space, no chances to hit their military-industrial complex and instead the Covenant had Forerunner technology able to track every single human in the galaxy... a sort of transponder of every human planet... They was forced into a defensive position and by that, into a weaker position. After the war, the UNSC got and gained lots of new toys. Covenant assets, technology, intel, also Forerrunner stuff... They had the maps, and still enough workforce and military and industrial capabilities. And they was so smart to go immediately to attack. No matter if the war was over, loyalist covenant remnants was wiped out, planets was burned, Forerunner tech and locations was seized. It just needed to the UNSC to take the initiative to turn the tide and dwarf those who before was considered unbeatable foes. Even the same Forerunners or the Created adopted the same strategy, but thanks to Master Chief, they was beaten. Why? Because in all the chapters of the saga, Master Chief and those forces that follows him are that single decisive tip of the spear that goes ruin the plans of the enemies going to strike first and with max damage behind enemy lines. At the end of the day, if it wasn't for Master Chief, carrying out such manuevers on the grand scheme battlefield would have required way more forces and coordination. Spartans simply make the whole thing way more easy and effective. And mostly because they are so powered up and their mindset is so far from that of average humans, that they can simply succeed where we normal humans will not have great chances to survive.

The first time I’ve was exposed to the trope of sci fi soldiers in drop pods was Tiberian Sun, GDI had drop pods as a special ability in that game. I think the codified was Starship Troopers (the novel,) and obviously 40K space marines have it too, but I think the OFSTs are the most memorable incarnation as things currently stand. Helldivers may overtake them if it keeps up this momentum, but the satirical tone of the game makes for a different feel, and hell, they’re standing on the shoulders of giants anyway

Elite soldiers dropping into war from above is an idea as old as the first man to throw themselves out of a perfectly good plane with a parachute and rifle to their chest. Its only expanded on since then.

Before helldivers, we had the ODST. Before the ODST we had starship troopers. Man, the mobile infantry is such a good idea, such a scarily destructive idea, that it will never get its time on the silver screen or video game. Kudos to Halo for its Spartans. They come closest to what a mobile infantry can do.

One should remember that UNSC has wide access to incredible medical technology, medical technology that can fix most chronic medical problems that would prevent a person from becoming a soldier. So the UNSC had a lot of people that were physically absolutely capable of passing the training, but did not have the mindset, which is a generous way of saying they didn't have that special kind of brain damage that makes people wiling jump out planes on the regular, nevermind into enemy fire. The takeaway is this, you who are reading this, you could like have become an ODST if you really wanted to, because the UNSC had the medical technology to make you strong enough to actually do it.

From an in-universe perspective ignoring fan love, I’d imagine that ODSTs end up becoming a subsection of Spartan IVs or maybe even Spartan Vs. While normal Spartan IV/Vs do normal Spartan things, the Spartan ODSTs do normal ODST things, but as Spartans. We’ve already seen some Spartan Helljumpers like Alpha 9, so the natural in-universe continuation would be Super ODSTs.

you gotta check out the Kilo-Five trilogy, Glassland, Thursday War, and Mortal Dictata. takes place a few years after H3, and follows an ONI team of 3 ODSTs, a Spartan 2, an ONI Officer/Spook, and BB Oni's personal Smart AI (Like Cortana). They are tasked with fueling both sides of a civil war that breaks out on the Elites' homeworld. It shows a cool perspective of what ODSTs think of Spartans, especially when working together in the field. definitely worth a ready

My favorite ODST trooper, would have to be Mickey from Halo 3’s ONI HQ mission. He’s the Demolition specialist, and the written blurb he gets in the official guide is hilarious. Something along the line of he’s already a little crazy for willingly dropping into orbit from a functional spacecraft in the heat of battle. Now he’s extra crazy for wanting to do that and carry additional explosives as his main weapon.

First, brilliant video. You made such a dull, typical workday lunch so fun and nostalgic. Second, the sheer fact we only were blessed with a single game regarding ODSTs front and center will continue to be one of the biggest blunders Microsoft/343 continue to perpetuate. All those Reach attachments are partially thanked to the ODST design and the drop pods shown in Infinite's trailer (and in Halo 2) are thanked again to the sheer philosophy of ODST's. Outside of Halo, it's why I'm hoping the next Doom goes back to Doomguy being a marine. Sometimes being a "guy ready for whatever is up the creek" is more appealing than "green super soldier". Cheers to everyone who misses melancholy freeform jazz.

I think an interesting option for the ODSTs going forward will be becoming more like the rangers or cav scouts. A lighter, more mobile force mainly there for recon but can pick off high value targets or hold up the enemy long enough for heavier forces to get into the fight. Gives them a more defined niche without necessarily preventing them from doing the whole dropping on the enemies heads from orbit thing.
