There's a fan-made comic about noble team called "A Fistful of Arrows", by Levi Hoffmeier, that shows a Noble Team operation against an insurrectionist cell. The author included a scene where Emile gets absolutely blasted by a warthog gun which results in multiple dents and scratches in his EVA visor. He then proceeded to scratch his signature skull into the visor in order to hide the scratches. If you consider that canon, then that's a good reason to be pissed off at the Innies for.

Fun fact: Ackerson despised Halsey and the S2 program. Was it because it was unethical to kidnap kids? Nope! It was taking away funding from the ODST’s, his project. Despite hating the S2’s he saw that they were effective, but he saw room for improvement and an opportunity for revenge. The S3 program, expendable Spartans. He had Kurt kidnapped and faked his death in order to train the S3’s. Plus Halsey was completely unaware of the entire thing until Reach was falling (ignore Halo Reach Halsey).

The real life Spartans shows the weaknesses of the Spartan Way. The Spartiates were raised from Childhood in a brutal fashion, given little food and made to steal from others, regularly beaten and eventually forced to serve in death squads which terrorized the Helots (enslaved peoples which farmed for their Spartan overlords) and regularly trained and drilled. They did produce formidable phalanxes which held for longer which did have a fearsome reputation. The problem was that they were hard pressed to maintain a population base due to the high attrition rate among their youth. There were never more than 10,000 Spartan Men, often less. A lucky stab, slash, spear poke, arrow or sling bullet could still kill them and it would be years before any replacements were ready. The loss of a even a few hundred people was one they could ill afford. They also were famously defeated by the Sacred Band of Thebes at the battle of Leuctra, a body of men retained by the state of Thebes to be the ultimate phalanx (also composed of homosexual couples). The Roman Legions were far more efficient: the Roman State recruited people, trained them, fed, clothed, armed armored, sheltered and supplied them, kept them under arms and drilled them regularly. At their height there were about 200,000 Legionaries as well as 300,000 Auxilia recruited from various non-citizen populations.
@RememberTheDuck3 ай бұрын
That's what gets me: A well-outfitted and *mostly* happy military is the best way forward. We've seen it several times throughout history. Spartans were badasses, but they suffered from low numbers and quality over quantity. "Quality Over Quantity" was even at play with German armor during WW2... Sure, your Tiger could rip a Sherman to pieces with little effort, but 3-4 at once? Not a chance. Which isn't a knock against WW2 Era German armor, they're beautiful pieces of machinery even now, but there just weren't enough.
@addisonwelsh3 ай бұрын
That's without mentioning that a Spartan style training program wouldn't work for a modern military. A lot of jobs and positions require college degrees, so you have to educate your soldier to a college level while also giving him military training. It'd be much better to spot a perspective candidate and use social engineering to influence them into joining the military, where they will then likely qualify for whatever super soldier program you're working on.

@@addisonwelsh From what I remember the Spartan 2s did receive very high level education to go along with their brutal training but it was mostly military related things which makes it a bit more sad when it comes to basic interaction with regular marines or soldiers being described as awkward and strange due to a lack of teaching basic human conversation/communication (that was non-military related).
@aquila44603 ай бұрын
@@thehtehteotheithe Entirely wrong. While Spartiate women did have it better in some degrees then other Greek women at the time, they where locked away from political power, and their purpose was to have as many children as possible. The actual reason why Sparta had such a problem maintaining its population was because it was relativly easy to loose your Citizenship, by failing to uphold your social, economic or political duties, while becoming a citizen was essentially impossible. So with every generation more and more Spartan families dropped out of the system and became second class citizens(who had it still much better then the 90% of helots).

Two additional facts about the Spartan 1s for anyone interested: First, Sgt. Johnson was completely immune to the flood infection. This was how he survived Halo 1. It should be noted that this was unique to him, no other Spartan 1 was immune and Dr. Halsey didn't think it was possible to recreate it. Second, Sgt. Forge was hinted to be a Spartan 1.1 as his father or grandfather suffered from Boren's Syndrome. This is why he can survive a brawl with a Spartan 2, and kill the Arbiter in melee combat. Granted Jerome was certainly pulling his punches, and he only beat the Arbiter by tricking him. But I say the only thing more dangerous than a smart man, is a smart AND tough man.

Gonna use every chance I get to decry Karen Traviss' recons to Halsey and the Spartan program. There ain't no way Halsey did the entire flash clone thing behind ONI's back. It's ONI. You don't do ANYTHING behind their backs. Two, how would she even manage that without ONI? And three nothing about the flash clones as a cover up is outside of their modus operandi. These are the same chuckleforks who: - Nuked Civilians - Tried to WEAPONIZE THE EFFING FLOOD - Covered up most of the Human Covenant war - Found a marble sized slipspace bubble and pulled a whole Dyson Sphere out of it - Took it over said Dyson Sphere and founded Space Gitmo - Used a reporter to gaslight everyone into thinking the Master Cheif's real history was fake - Threw the reporter they used to do it into space gitmo and drove him insane - Tried to repeatedly destabilized genocide the Elites AFTER the war - One of those attempts involved selling guns to Space Bin Laden - Knew about ancient humanity long before anyone else And Travis expects me to believe a civilian contractor organized a whole cloning op just under their noses, and they would have objected to such a cover up. I'd also like to remind everyone than prior to the Kilo-Five character assassination Parangoski resented her for having too much of a moral compass compared to the rest of ONI and did everything to keep the S3s covered up from her because of it, which says a lot about ONI. Need I remind everyone the Spartan III program was the S2 program again but with more kids but now clad in stealth-coated paper mache and sent on suicide missions by the hundreds. Also later on they added intentional berseker drugs into the mix, that had to be suppresed with medication for the rest of the life otherwise they would psychologically degenerate into rabid animals within days. But this is supposed to be more ethical and no way as evil as what Halsey did because they get "Consent" from 5 year old traumatized orphans. Remember how Halsey was adamant about not lying to the Spartans or brainwashing them out of fear that the Paramount Halo TV show would exist and out of whatever genuine human decency she could spare knowing how horrible the situation was regardless? Karen Traviss sure doesn't remember. Remember how ONI already had the Spartan 2 program planned out and Halsey stayed on partly out of fear of how much crueler it may have been without her? Nah let's throw that in the trash and come up with her being a eugenicist out of nowhere, and she was the sole mastermind and somehow tricked all of bloody Space INGSOC into doing what she wanted. Granny knows what she did was awful and loathes it. Y'all need to give her a break and get on the rest of ONI's case. Especially Parangoski's self-righteous butt.

@@addisonwelsh To be fair the UNSC is still better than The Imperium, even with all the fucked up shit ONI does. For all their evil the government of Halo is clearly descended from The Enlightenment and its origins are in the Liberal Democracies of the 20th century. As such there is value placed on things like objective truth, human rights and individual liberty/responsibility. If you notice ONI actually feels the NEED to hide what it does from the public eye which means that the public at large would consider ONI’s actions morally reprehensible and would seek restitution for their crimes. The Imperium is a Frankenstein’s Monster of a civilization that takes basically all of the most brutal beliefs of human history and chucks them in a blender. It has no regard for anything other than mere survival and it believes only what is necessary to keep its people compliant. The Inquisition feels no need to hide its deeds from the public for fear of moral repercussions, in fact they show their atrocities openly like the Kings of ancient Babylon or Assyria. There’s no pretenses in the Imperium for things like justice or truth. For in the grim darkness of the far future peace has been forgotten, truth has no meaning, understanding is anathema and there remains only the eternal war against the dying of the light. Abandon all hope to ye who enter the 41st Millennium.

How in the hell was the Queen Spook of ONI--who is described as having her hands in every piece of dirty business in the UNSC--somehow unaware that an important ONI program (carried out by ONI agents) involved replacing the Spartan candidates with clones until after the fact? Also, two things worth mentioning about the S3s. We got a good chance to compare the baseline abilities of the 2s and 3s in Ghosts of Onyx when Kurt chose to use SPI armor instead of his MJOLNIR in an act of solidarity with the 3s. The book also shows the extremes the Gamma company's secret augments allowed them operate under when after combat one dropped de ad seemingly unaware he had been grievously wounded in the fight.

S2s especially in later gens of armour have lifting strength closer to custodes level, and in the most recent model, straight up at/slightly above into the three digits tonnes not at full effort when wounded to the bone on one leg. Their proportions compared to astartes makes a lot of people assume they must be dex builds/drastically weaker. Edit: i feel i should clarify given some others in the community. Yes i still like astartes and custodes this isn't to rag on them. Also i am talking unnamed marines because 40k runs entirely on plot armour for its scaling so yes you can absolutely debunk what i said by taking pov characters : P Second edit: ok this is driving me nuts i made two long ass responses to comments in the chain and they arent showing up after hitting post so i'll add it here in todr form: Spartans age 12 outrunning aimbot from mech autocannons and punching them down, in a flat field hundreds of metres wide with no cover and the mechs in the centre, no armour, no weapons, still coping with body recovering from augments and being not fully grown. Neophytes are NOT pulling it off, grown fully equipped marines could with variables on the loss count. Space marines having plot armour has become such a meme that we looped back around to calling out people calling it out, but it doesnt mean the plot armour isnt strong as adamantite. Halo still has plot armour, as most stories do, but is immensely more consistent. I had to trim that shit down i aint rewritting thel fully screw that. Third goddamn edit: i am actually losing my goddamn mind with youtube deleting my f***ing answers. Here's to spartans in gen 3 and why brutes are much more of a problem most people realise because gameplay balance makes them jokes by comparison: chief lifted a block of granite the size of a warthog Flipping scorpions is canon Strong brutes have been quoted as being able to rip a hunter in two if they get in range since halo 2 (tartarus did it and he wasnt THAT big an outlier stat wise aside from the funky stuff the fist of rukt did) Brutes live on the harshest world when it comes to gravity of the halo races, they're not simply tall, they are absurdly dense, a naked brute WILL take a mag dump from an MA5B point blank and still have enough juice left to rip you apart. Mind you UNSC ballistics despite using the same calibres as modern weapons for dimensions have considerably higher yields (people more educated than me did the calcs such as installation 00 and i think marcus vence? I may hvae fucked up the name, cant look up on youtube while typing the comment. Both the material science, propellant, and chamber pressure put them much higher than the modern equivalents) Hunters depending on the exact form and armour designation are in the 5 tonnes area with their main armour being at tank level (our tanks, not theirs, to be clear, covenant nanolaminite is pretty strong given it shits on unsc titanium a) and have the strength to bring mid sized vehicles to a full stop with an arm swing and ruin them in the process. I cant do the maths on hand for what bringing a fully loaded hog to a stop by punching it with no ill effect to the hunter consists of in strength and resilience but yeah brutes have been compared to these fuckers lorewise. Brutes function like smarter faster angrier ogryns more than an ork but have similar pitfalls where if you're in their ballpark even with a disadvantage if you keep to range you have a good chance but letting them in cqc with no prior experience dealing with them or opponents considerably stronger than you is a death sentence even to spartans to some extent. As for s2s in gen 3 getting bodied by brutes That happened exactly once in mainline content and under pretty specific circumstances: Chief vs atriox It isnt an even fight from the get go as atriox both has a free hit by being a lil bitch (never fights spartans head on without ambush...ok admittedly more smart than anything) and has a much higher grade weapon than chief who only has a sidearm. Atriox's gravity mace at absolute worst should compare to a regular grvaity hammer (logically would be higher but i will keep it at that level) Gravity hammers have similar effects as hunter punches except with AOE and debilitating/concussive effects (if something is enough of a brick to survive a strike) The fact that chief was still standing at all after a full force initiative strike from that without being mush is a testament to gen3, any other previous gen would have simply gotten mulched. (This is consistent with other gen 3 feats as its able to facetank monitor beams, something that fucked up chief in mark 6 which is technically better than gen2 armour on s2s) Also Atriox not only is a brute and thus gets everything i talked about Not only has a personalised gravity mace incorporating banished upgrades and blades from silent shadows in it He's also iirc the single most imposing brute we have seen towering over even other brutes AND if you didnt notice His armour is actually powered He is amped Frankly this goes more to show how much of an upgrade Gen3 is than anything else. So yes Spartans getting messed up by brutes in cqc unless they have a bunch of experience dealing with them already and ARENT ambushed is normal. Should specify the granite lifting feat is what i alluded to with chief having a wound to the bone on one of his legs during that feat, its in a recent story, am on the highway (passenger dont worry) so honestly cant be bothered to go back check which it is but should be one of the most recent novels. The nlock of granote was calced at minimum 100+ tonnes hence my statement, that and it is roughly in line with spartans up to this point if you account the gen 3 boost and the wound + chief not being all that strong for an s2 Note: just remembered that monitor beams also vaporise elites with shields down and bissecr hunters if at full power, was most proeminently seen in the comic that starred black team iirc

@@sirflapfla97 astartes armour and bolter resilience and output is MONSTRUOUSLY inconsistent to the point it allows a chapter of marines to take on a force of necrons or eldar that vastly outnumbers them if the writer feels like it, something that very simply shouldn't happen as the opponent are in their ballpark in statline or above while having weapons and armour at minimum comparable to theirs (on paper, GW likes to just like ....not do that and makes SMs tank eldar shit all the time) comparable / better training (eldar) I'm picking those two because they're realistically the biggest offender while still being kinda eyebrow raising just from a glancing look The most egregious case would be the tau since....like, as much as some may hate them, yes, an actual tactically competent military with gear for their basic troops that can harm marines consistently (i'm NOT saying basic tau guns can one tap marines but they have WAY better performance on ceramite than say lasguns and normal ballistic weaponry) would shitstomp the mostly medieval level shit most of 40k has. Necrons can fall into that category too SOMETIMES but heavily depends on the leader, and the individual non named necron wont exactly be tactically competent. Halo is both a more grounded and more consistent verse, a plasma pistol was a threat to unshielded spartans at the start of the war, it still kills a spartan with its shields down in three shots by the time of the fall of reach. Only post war sees significant upgrade in unsc plasma resilience for non shielded stuff. There is plot armour, no popular sci fi setting and most stories involving a main character cant function without some. But its much, much, much less egregious than 40k I dont care How skilled your marine is They arent lifting a necron pilon Winning 1000 vs multiple billions on an eldar craftsworld (happened) Destroying a lord of skulls in melee. What needs to be remembered about John doing that to the ODSTs at 14 is that he wasn’t even considered the best of the Spartan 2s, at least not physically or mentally in any way. He wasn’t the strongest, he wasn’t the fastest, he wasn’t the best marksman, he wasn’t the best fighter and he wasn’t the smartest. In universe, the only thing he has going for himself is that he’s canonically lucky, and gets the job done (plus Cortana). A 14 year old Spartan who was getting used to his new enhancements, that wasn’t even considered the top of his cohort, was able to decimate 4 fully grown, well trained ODSTs, while not trying to actually physically maim them. The deaths/injuries he caused weren’t through malicious intent or rage. They were due to him not realising how strong he truly was and how much he needed to hold back.

33:42 Especially the chief. Heck, get the rarest and best materials we can find, make a new alloy with them, and make a suit truly unique to that one-man army. Mans is literally so fast and powerful, I wouldn't be surprised if positions he takes go unmanned or skeleton crewed for weeks as the U.N.S.C. Logistics fail to keep up. When you need something impossible to be done, send in the chief and he'll do it in hours. O.N.I. Should put every resource they have into improving and supporting him, at least.

The difference between Halo and 40K is that 40K is dramatically depressing, Halo is quietly depressing.
@typhoonoftempestАй бұрын
On a rewatch and rethink about this and why Spartan IVs get better armor than Spartan IIs or IIIs is a simple one: because the IVs require constant check-ups and adjustments to their augmentations, every time they leave the lab they are on a soft time limit before their augmentations get out of whack or even wear off, while IIs and IIIs don't have this limitation. Having your supersoldier require constant maintenance is just a way of keeping them in check or you'll get what they thought Master Chief became: a rogue demigod of war roaming up your backside. Nobody wants that. So the IV's augmentations having less kick yet having much better armor means they have a limited shelf life of maximum effectiveness before they wear down in a few months at the longest of timescales, while a II or III can just keep trucking well into their 70's and 80's and still be able to fold Unistrut with their bare hands.
