After reading Austin's letter about leaving Of Mice & Men and describing the constant pain that he was in, I'm quickly making connections that this is a very personal song for him, and reflects his physical pain from Marfan Syndrome as well as perhaps the emotional pain from the decisions that he's had to face as a result. I think this song is a work of art. It makes me think and feel for myself and others. My daughter plays it for us in the car almost daily...she deals with a lot of pain, more than I probably realize most of the time. Physical pain in her feet and body from her training as a ballet dancer, in her back sometimes from scoliosis, and she has struggled emotionally to the point of cutting herself in the past. I appreciate the message this song gives me from the perspective of another who deals with pain everyday.

I've had recurring depression since my Dad passed away 13 years ago, exacerbated by my stepfathers death a few years later and my best friend taking his own life at only 16. I'm now a 20something old adult, a university graduate, and I still feel like I'm in pain every day. Austin signed my arm in Manchester and I got it tattooed over, and I swear being able to look at my arm and see Austin's signature there is the only thing that can help me some days. If it wasn't for Austin, Aaron, Alan, Phil and Tino there's a good chance I wouldn't even be here right now. I don't know about my future, whether it might actually be worth living in, but what I do know is I owe these guys everything for helping me make it as far as I have. For anyone else in a similar situation; please stay strong, you're truly not alone.

This song says why Austin left the band. His Marfan syndrome had gotten so bad that he couldn't perform without being in excruciating pain. This is why he left: “My greatest fear had become a reality… I had 3 tears in my dual sac surrounding my spinal cord, and we discovered that every time I would push down to scream spinal fluid would rush though the tears which was causing me the violent pain every time I’d perform. It was causing my muscles to seize up, and body to contort on stage, and making me lethargic and sore every hour of the day.”

Bands don't like to release the same music album after album. Get over it.
@AndrewDRoyappa8 жыл бұрын
But when they obviously dumb down their music to appeal to more people/fangirls, it's kind of sad to see this is legitimately bad music
@NotcoolJames8 жыл бұрын
+Andrew D. Royappa they didn't dumb down anything. If anything they are maturing. And in case you've been living under a rock or just simply don't understand, the scene is evolving and there are bands that are gonna stay at the top of it for that reason. The music in general in this scene is warping towards a much simpler sound. Of mice and men, bring me the horizon, the word alive, etc are bands that will still be relevant ten years from now cuz they GET IT.
@AndrewDRoyappa8 жыл бұрын
Maturing by writing obviously simpler songs with boring two-step beats? Whatever that is, it's garbage and I guess I'll steer clear of the scene's "leaders" from now on

Never really liked metalcore but I gave this album a listen and was actually quite surprised with the sense of confinement and helplessness in it. It all felt very close, cold, and almost claustrophobic. Much quieter than I imagined, this is easily the most in your face song I feel from the album.

I do find OM&M better when Aaron shuts up and lets Austin get on with it. Don't get me wrong, I don't mind Aaron if he plays 2nd to Austin as a backing vocalist like in Bones Exposed. But Aaron does too much vocal work and takes up way too much song time. Austin taking full vocal control and the band keeping things heavy is the future of this band going forward. I love this style. I hope that the whole of Cold World reflects the same style as Pain has.

Hope their other newer stuff sounds like this (when/if they come out with more soon), because THIS is why I loved Of Mice & Men. This band is a shining example of how sometimes the metal community can be so toxic. This album is awesome and since the band wanted to evolve their sound and make something different people instantly fucking pissed and moaned about it. "How can these be the same guys who wrote Ohioisonfire and Let Live?!" Its because they dont want to make the same record again and again. I understand why some people may not like the new style and theres nothing wrong with that, but LOADS of people instantly called it shit and claimed they decided to sell out and question their character. The way I see it is that we have a great band with amazing people in it who have evolved over time with 4 kick ass albums for people to enjoy.
@spaghett0id8 жыл бұрын
TL;DR - just because Austin isnt ripping his vocals by screaming and then having Shayley/Aaron serenade us on (nearly) every track anymore, doesn't mean its bad

You might think the album is awesome but to some people they think that Cold War and Restoring force are boring and unoriginative. Personally Im all up for bands wanting to evolve however If I dont like their newer stuff its because I have real problems with it. Avenged Sevenfold is a band that evolved dramatically yet still retains most of its fans due to creating good consistent music. However this band didn't transition that smoothly thus the huge disconnect.

You want to know why metal is having a hard time making a comeback? Because shitty fans like the ones that complain about this song. Bands change, bands take influence from other bands. It's always been this way. Slipknot and Linkin Park are two bands that influence them, sometimes there will be similarities in their song styles. And why is that a bad thing?! Slipknot and Linkin Park are amazing bands and I love hearing a new generation of rockers being influenced by them. If you don't like it and if it's so terrible, stop listening to it and go listen to something else. So easy right?! I guess not haha.

***** ATS and LT had some pretty heavy songs. The thing I don't like about everything since Meteora is that they kinda trashed their Hybrid theory idea where they were a mix between hip-pop and metal were you couldn't tell which part was hip-hop and which part was metal. I love that their newest album kinda goes back to their old style but the songs are either Metal or a very hip-hoppy nu-metal.
