I think the older woman and the younger woman are the same person. The picture at 3:10 has the younger woman's face on the older woman's body. And you can see that they are one in the same by the sequence at the end on the bed. The younger woman could represent the part of herself that does not fit into the normal gender or sexuality definition, and her older, wiser self is wishing she could go back and teach the younger version to love herself instead of feeling isolated and unhappy.

So from reading the comments and the director's thoughts on it, I think the video is about the young woman learning to love herself, with help from the older woman. The older woman and her have a relationship similar to a romantic one, and the older woman teachers the younger one how to be young, and to be in the moment and feel happy with herself. Their relationship is special and makes them feel like they're alone in a separate world, and the younger girl learns to be unique and appreciate herself, instead of always being the one observing those who she finds unique. She relaxes, and becomes less on edge, and learns to live in the moment. At the end, when the older woman floats off the bed, it symbolizes that she either leaves or dies, and that when the younger woman reflects on herself, she sees that she has inherited the qualities she had admired in others, but was never able to see in herself. She sees who the older woman helped her to become, and how that relationship was something precious, how she loved her for it, and how she's sad she's gone.

Wait a moment....The young is not a guy? I tought it was all the video, in my own opinion the video its a description of that you can love anyone, it doesnt Matter how old or young it is, If it is a men or a woman, its a video to show that, of course everybody has their own description about the video and i respect that, but we all have to agree that the music its amazing
@alexandranorton59998 жыл бұрын
I think they're the same person, but the old her is wise enough to finally accept who she really is (not traditionally feminine/ or not heterosexual) and she reminisces on her past and wishes she had accepted herself sooner and not cared about society and it's norms.

In my opinion this is one of the best music videos for a song I have ever seen. It is just abstract enough to make you think a bit, with some clever cinematography to encourage re-watching, but also just literal enough that we can see the connection of lyrics to what we are seeing.

For those who didn't understand the video. I'm from Brazil, I don't speak English very well but I will try to explain what I understood. The two are the same person, and now she's older but she tries to feel new again remembering how it was before, and realizes that she can feel young, even not being younger. It's a bit confusing but that's what I understood.

I feel this is also a song about how everyone deserves to have a place where they can belong. They show us this couple that consists of many societal taboos (old/young relationships, two females, one female prefers male styling, elderly dressing young) and give them an escape within each other where they can be themselves completely. Heavy stones fear no weather.

There's a river running wild that will create An empire for you An empire for two An empire for you An empire for two And I paint your body black I hide in your hair And you're staring back at me Like I wasn't there As our bodies become stills We welcome the fear Heavy stones Fear no weather And from the rain Comes a river running wild that will create An empire for you Illuminate! The young woman is an androgynous model named Erika Linder ; the old woman is Ingmari Lamy, a Sweden model. In my opinion, they (obviously) have a relationship. I know some of you might find it weird or creepy but I actually find it beautiful. Erika, a young person, only sees other people's beauty but never hers. But through her relationship with the old yet youthful Ingmari, who teaches her to be live her life happily while she is young and to see her own beauty within and to accept herself, Erika learns to love herself eventually. In the end, when they switch outfits, it's like Ingmari passed on something to Erika before passing away/moving on: Ingmari taught a lot of things to Erika that teaches her to see her own beauty. Therefore, the song "Empire" -- Ingmari has built an empire (Erika) before she moved on for Erika? In other words, Ingmari helped Erika build herself as a whole person she can love as much as Ingmari did.

okay just an observation. at 3:06 right before it shows her young with long hair, their is a picture of the rune ING framed. this is the male fertility rune. so here are my thoughts. the video is of the woman, old at a party. a woman who inside was always a man. in her mind her younger self (st the moment she accepted inside who she was) dressed as a man, accompanies her to a secret place she's been making for herself since that moment where she celebrates her inner self. she is dying and is released to be who she always was while her body is lifted and fades away. she pulls away as her younger self embracing her gender but in the dress she was wearing at death. the last scene is a flashback to the moment she realized she was a man.

what I got from this video is that the old woman is a lesbian that already found herself and feel the belonging in this world, whereas the young confused woman didn't felt that she belong anywhere. Eventually, both of them fell in love and the older woman showed her how she belonged in this world and she had to love herself before anyone else. And after she had done her job by letting a young confused woman feel in place, it's time for her to leave this world.

LETRAS Feel the ocean as it breathes Shivering teeth See the mountains where they meet Smothering me As the wind fends off the waves I count down the days Heavy stones fear no weather I find comfort in the sound And the shape of the heart How it echoes through the chest From under the ground As the hills turn into holes I fill them with gold Heavy stones fear no weather From the rain comes a river Running wild that we create An empire for you Illuminate there is a river Running wild that will create An empire for you An empire for two An empire for you An empire for two And I paint your body black I hide in your hair And you're staring back at me Like I wasn't there As our bodies become stills We welcome the fear Heavy stones fear no weather From the rain comes a river Running wild that will create An empire for you Illuminate there is a river Running wild that will create An empire for you An empire for two An empire for you An empire for two From the rain comes a river Running wild that will create An empire for you Illuminate there is a river Running wild that will create An empire for you An empire for two An empire for you An empire for two

The way that I see it is that they are one and the same person and this is the story of how they learned to love themselves. It should not be any less beautiful and meaningful than a story about love involving two different people. The older woman might represent what they aspire to be and in the end, they achieve that goal without losing who they were before. They accept themselves whole.

3:10 Es ella misma, pasado y futuro, la señora mayor está ''abrazando'' el recuerdo de ella misma en su juventud y legandole el imperio de sabiduría adquirida con el paso de los años.

You obviously haven't seen Bjork's music video for 'Human Behaviour'. Talk about a doozy.

Read other comments and just want to throw the director's comments here: noisey.vice.com/blog/of-monsters-and-men-empire The video really is about a forbidden relationship between two women with a large age gap but the interpretations people have come up with are also really awesome and creative. :'D

If you read up about these two amazing people, you will find some very interesting facts about them both! This video is outstanding! I watch it at least once or twice a year since it first came out! Beautifully done and it fits the song so perfectly. TO me, the young one just doesn't feel like fitting in...the older woman shows that the young one does belong.

The way i see it, the main girl is at her mother's funeral and the older woman you see is the main girl remembering all the good memories about her. Thats why the main girl is so sad until the older woman shows up, she misses her

I think that this means more than a normal releationship. I think the old woman represents acceptance, and the main caracter seeks it

This is such a brilliant video... I think the young woman isn't necessarily lesbian, but queer and rejects conformity and gender stereotypes. It is arguable that the old lady is actually an old happy version of herself, which is odd considering in the end we see the young woman wearing the dress- meaning, she eventually did conform? However there are glimpses of a picture which seems to be the young woman with long hair like the old lady so this could mean this theory is actually true. Another explanation could be that the younger woman wanted bliss and feminine beauty and in the end somehow they swapped bodies; it wouldn't be new for Of Monsters & Men to incorporate fantastical elements in their music and videos- but is it as deep as the other possible meanings? I think both of the actresses are breathtakingly beautiful and the story here is very moving. And the song is amazing all on its own.
