The end theme for Nils Gaup's "Ofelas" (1987). The English title for the movie is Pathfinder.

It's a joik - a Sami pentatonic chant about a person, place or signature tune. The composer was Finnish Sami Nils-Aslak Valkeapää (1943-2001). It is highly evocative of an endless icy waste.

Believe it or not, I bought the videotape in 1989 or 1990, here in Italy. Watched the movie 3 or 4 times. I still have it, somewhere. Really great. By the way, the hero actually 'perished', up there on the ridge, along with the raiders he led into the trap. That is why he later became the new shaman of the community. You might believe it's a happy ending, but in reality he would have become a marginal, a living corpse, with no wife or children (despite the languid glance of the girl in the movie). To me, this is the song of the end of his childhood and youth, and of his own death.

sten larsson They remade it into an American mobile-- very pale compared to this & not based on any actual indigenous legends or tales.

Sadly, the captive bear in this movie was euthanized after the filming was completed.

That is really sad and ironic

@opossumd Interesting. But it doesn't evoke an icy waste to me. It sounds more like, a great tale has just come to an end. The hero's journey is over. Not knocking your opinion, just giving my iwn perspective.
