Off Broadway or West End? | Heathers Album Comparison

Hey guys, Happy easter! My Heathers video is finally here! So Heathers is pretty well known as both a movie and a musical, the musical having two different versions resulting in two different cast albums: The Off Broadway cast album and the West End cast album. So today let's see what's different about each one and which one is better!

While I do understand the controversy behind Blue, I personally think it was the better option. You're Welcome portrays Kurt and Ram as two genuinely evil and sober people trying to rape Veronica, while Blue shows them as two drunk high-school boys going way too far. J.D killing them shouldn't be justified, so Kurt and Ram shouldn't be purely sober criminals. In Blue, yes, they're acting like terrible people, and yes, it should make the audience uncomfortable, but that's the point. To summarize: You're Welcome justifies their murders and makes J.D seem heroic for them, which shouldn't happen.

they usually cut out like 1 or 2 songs when it comes to movie adaptations. what songs do you think would be cut for the movie?

@@jeff.fliehman If I had to choose a couple songs I’d pick any two from Fight for Me, Prom or Hell and Yo Girl. Ideally I’d rather cut none but those scenes (specifically Prom or Hell and Yo Girl) I feel could work without any musical numbers.

May I quickly make the point, Kurt and ram aren’t gay… jd frames them as queer because he thinks it wil, make them a laughing stock, in the go material they aren’t gay, and I don’t think you are meant to believe they are gay. I do like how the WE production makes that more obvious, JD is being a homophobe. He’s a bad guy, Because of what he’s grown up knowing. Kurt and ram aren’t gay no matter how much people ship them ( I do too! But when criticism becomes involved please look at the facts)

For yo girl,according to Google (not a very good source,but best I have) brimstone is one of the things mentioned in the description of hell in the bible. Brimstone meaning burning sulfur. Possibly being something to do with the come join Heather in hell line.

I've only recently joined the Heathers fandom, so you best believed I clicked real fast when I saw this video pop up in my recommended. I do want to give my opinion on some things. I am currently writing this out whilst I watch, so it'll probably end up being in list form :) In my opinion, I prefer the West End version. Maybe because it was the first version I heard and listened to, but I honestly found some of the singing in the Off-Broadway a little bit screechy (e.g. Dead Girl Walking) in comparison. I find Carrie's vocals sound a lot healthier, and she wasn't struggling to hit the notes, a point you noted with Barrett damaging her voice performing this musical. On that note, I feel like a majority of the OB cast recording sounds monotone (notably with the "big fun" repetition in Big Fun as one example). As for the stage setting, I feel like there isn't anything really going for the OB version. At least with the West End version, there's something to look at, compared to the raised platform in OB. Is that because it was a professional production? Maybe, I still think the stage setup is a heck of a lot better in the West End. I do want to say, the UK production (pro-shoot) changed lyrics, notably Heather Chandler and Ms Flemming's discussion the suicide note in Me Inside of Me. This was because the term "ghetto" is considered offensive, and I believe they wanted to make seeing Heathers more accessible to younger audiences, but that's a whole other topic for discussion. As for the Blue vs You're Welcome debate, I also prefer You're Welcome. I agree with you pointing out that YW makes Kurt and Ram seem like more of an active threat compared to Blue, and I think that Blue makes a mockery of date rape if I'm being honest. I also find it to be way more catchy. Another thing, I find that YW actually gives an insight into what Veronica is thinking in that moment, something I think the OB production really lacks. I do think the placement of the outfit change in Never Shut Up Again is perfect. The fact that her new red outfit is revealed before "I will never shut up again" is a great reference to Heather Chandler's treatment of Duke earlier on, especially with HC always telling her to shut up. I think the timing is *chef's kiss*. I do disagree with your view on Lifeboat however. I find the higher key sung by Sophie Isaacs highlights the desperation she feels, and I overall think she sounds a lot better, with it sounding less strained than the OB version. The line "what's that brimestone-y smell?" from Yo Girl is actually a reference to a follow up line, "Come join Heather in hell." Brimestone is a substance that is associated with fire and volcanic activity. It gives off an awful odour when burnt, so with a logical leap, people say it is a reference to hell. I have strong feelings about Meant to Be Yours, as it is one of my favourites from the musical. I find that although Ryan has an overall better voice, Jamie's vocals make him seem more psychotic, albeit only slightly. His perfomance as well, especially his eye contact with members of the audience really shows his mental state, and for that reason, just nudges him forward for me. I personally prefer the lyric change in I am Damaged. I find the West End lyrics fit better, as it shows JD was too stuck in his ways to see what Veronica was trying to say/do. Might just be me, but I think him realising his mistakes doesn't really fit his character. Heck, movie JD was going to kill Veronica after all. And yet in the musical, even though he was a goner, he still expected Veronica to say "our love is god" back to him, and he didn't get that resolution. I struggled wording how I felt about this, but hopefully it at least makes some sense. Overall, you made some amazing points, majority of which I agreed with. Fantastic video, and I am greatly looking forward to seeing what videos you make in the future! :)

i won't say anything abt the other things bc it's your opinion:),but i will talk abt the stage setting: the oobc cast was an off-broadway production so they had a way lower budget then a broadway production or a west end production,so there really wasn't much that they could do with the stage setting,but beside that you did valid points that i agree with even tho i like the oobc ver better:)

For the smiling bit before life boat the first west end actress for Heather Mac didn’t do a good job during that part but it can be done really well proven by the proshot actress she smiles but it’s clear she’s faking it, she’s shaking, she looks like she’s about to cry, and before smiling she swallows the lump in her throat

Great video, Evelyn! You made some pretty saliant points for both musicals! I'm personally team-Off-Broadway and while I understand why folks enjoy the West End, it's just not for me. The lyric changes didn't grab me and I'm not really onboard with the new songs they added. Still, more power to those that enjoy West End! Keep up the great work, girl!

I do agree! I was nervous this wouldn't be much to agree with, but although both have perks, there's so much more the original does better, and I'm glad you also thought so! I see a lot of people speaking of which one's better than the others, but they both have their ups and downs overall. Anyway, good musical 10/10 👍

I think that the west end pro shot is much better than the original west end cast recording personally, there isn’t an actual recording of it anywhere but the songs are on KZbin and there is a KZbin playlist of all of the pro shot songs and I find the actors much better! It would be great if you could compare that too!!

In terms of the creative aspects, heathers west end is better. The set, costumes, coreography and lighting is more developed. In the show and the Cast recording , the mix of audio and instrumentation sounds bigger, crisper and more complete. However some vocals in the Recording are dodgy but in the UK we have had so many casts with lots of different takes on the vocals

Interesting question! I think they’re pretty similar in how big their roles are. Heathers Duke does a little more to push the plot but Heather Mac’s part will probably hit people more emotionally. So I would say their roles are pretty equally big in different ways.

​@@forgottenrecordsofficialso,by your logic,the oobc ver is bad bc it didn't make it on broadway? it's not an actor's decision wether a show is off broadway or on broadway,it depends on the audience. i like the oobc cast more bc they still tried their best and delivered their lines just like how they needed to be delivered and the acting was amazing. while i still liked the west end ver,i feel like some lines where delivered either with no emotion or with too much emotion and some acting choices weren't the best but ,it was great anyways. (srry if it's a bit long lol)
