The fuzzy thing thing is called shell texturing some game engines allow you to apply the effect without having to manually model it too

The castle beneath the water surface is used by Nintendo as a fake water mirror. I've recently decompiled the model of the whole map you see there and they used this technique to save on rendering time by not actually making a huge mirror out of the lake but simply doing it that way. Kinda clever actually. Same with the ships.

I actually tried that on the wii with dolphin the problem though is that legos games unload parts of the map as you move and simplify the geometry so you can never see the entire environment. I only tested this with lego games based on the original lego starwars engine.

Theory about low poly Roselina’s angry eye: It could be another leftover from an old idea. Perhaps Roselina was meant to have an encounter against some form of enemy and her expression would grow cross and as she attacked her hair would move away to reveal her right eye. Perhaps the developers just left the eye angry looking cause the player wouldn’t need to see it in at any other moment. Why it’d be on the low poly version of the model still baffles me though.

It can be extremely taxing on higher resolution characters if you're not using it sparingly. ie, deleting parts of the mesh.

Shesez Dead Sound animations would be good for boundary breaking. In No Monsters (sequel to Being Pretty) for instance, in the behind the scenes he shows that he had to use forced perspective to make it look like mom's sitting on the bed. That was a pain for him.

The doors to the castle do open on the final level where the doors open so that Mario goes through the portal to Bowser’s Galaxy, and Mario and Peach are also seen leaving the castle (this time it’s a prerendered cutscene though) through those doors after defeating bowser, the difference is a portal wormhole texture thing on the room instead of the plain wall.
