4 years ago I felt lost, even though society had clearly paved the path for me. I was 17 and living in Stockholm Sweden. After seeing the documentary "Alone in the wilderness" by Dick Proenneke, I became completely obsessed with the idea of just packing a rucksack of hand tools and wondering off into the vast forest of Sweden to create my own life, living off the land and build a log cabin. I found my meaning, but I was still in high school. My Grandparents owned forest so I started spending more and more time with them every weekend, wandering out, dreaming of my obsession and asking for advise. I had absolutely no prior knowledge of anything how I was going to do this, just the obsession to learn. When I turned 18 I told everyone of my plans. I received a gopro camera from my parents, so I could at least film some of my adventures. I hadn't even thought about filming anything but I did so and am I glad I did. It is a long story from here of hard work, pain, cold, making many many mistakes and figuring out how to solve problems all alone by trial and error. But I finally built the cabin all alone after 3 years. Along the way I also became passionate in filmmaking, so I invested in a better camera. The whole journey is filmed on a tripod and edited by me, which was lets just say a struggle (I am insane). Some people will doubt this and say I had a film crew and construction team, which I just take as a big complement. I know my journey and I hope to inspire others the same way Dick Proenneke inspired me.

What makes this so unique is the fact that there's no blaring music. It's just the sounds of nature and someone building a cabin. Honestly at first: I thought it was gonna be boring but I somehow got really hooked.

I think something I love about this is that he didn't force himself to have to rely on everything from nature, it looks like maybe his grandparents or himself went out and bought some things to help him on his journey, like tools and concrete powder and other helpful survival equipment, even a razor to cut his hair. It just makes it feel more realistic in a sense, and he is very open about the tools he used showing them in many camera shots clearly and demonstrating the use. I don't have the money for any of the tools, and I'd be over it in a week, ask someone else to build it, annoy the builder, but finally move in and find out one bedroom house with no toilet or power is not my ideal life... oh, and any sizable hunting grounds are hours away by car or even plane tbh.

I have to admit, though, I couldn’t help but smile when you talked about feeling 'lost' at 17. After all, with such valuable skills at that age-like woodworking, problem-solving, and sheer determination-it seems you already had more survival knowledge than many people ever gain! In Russia, it’s common to say that most young people naturally have those skills. Seriously though, your dedication is impressive, and I can see why people admire your resilience and passion.

This is a gorgeously filmed videography of Erik’s passion project, the evidently solo undertaking of a young man constructing a log cabin over a 3 year period, mostly from the raw materials Mother Nature provided him via a dense forest in Sweden. The locale with its seasonal variations is achingly beautiful, and the scope of the step by step tasks he undertakes to craft his beautiful, very sturdy cabin nearly beggars belief that ONE MAN could have done it all-and yet I’m clear that he did. And Lord have mercy, what a varied set of skill sets he has a mastery of: carpenter, lumberjack, architect, stone mason, blacksmith, welder, bricklayer, roofer, and oh yeah-wilderness hunter, fisherman and outback chef. The final result is such a masterpiece of a log cabin, it leaves me wanting to know: did he have all these skills under his belt by his late teens, or was he an autodidact who systematically taught himself the mastery of all the tools as he went along? Either way, the end result here is a superbly filmed story that, wonder of wonders, has no musical soundtrack, but rather allows nature to provide the natural sound score, with the accompaniment of a deeply devoted, sweet natured pooch who is clearly having a ball hanging out with his master 24/7 for the duration of this truly marvelous and wonderful adventure. Erik’s film of his passion project is quite simply one of the best movies I’ve ever seen and enjoyed, and I’m a serious movie buff. One thing is clear: whoever ends up being Erik’s life partner will never lack for warm shelter, adventure or delicious wilderness gourmet dining. And PS: hats off and shout out to the family who raised such a vastly talented wunderkind of a young man! Talk about being brought up well! I want to ask this amazing young man if he was inspired by Richard Proenneke. In 1967, Richard Proenneke, at the age of 51, retired and moved to Twin Lakes alaska. He built a log cabin from scratch and lived in it for 30 years before his death in 1999. Richard used a special 8mm camera that could be hand cranked, allowing for 20-second shots without electricity. That 8mm footage was cut into a documentary called "Alone in the Wilderness." If erik isn't paying homage to Richard, this would be a coincidence of epic proportion. The techniques they use are identical. Both did all of it from the surrounding raw materals found on their soon to be homestead. For both, it was a solo project with limited outside tools (Hatchet, saw, tent, cooking materials.) Both had a dog and lived off the land, hunting, gathering and limited store bought essential food supply. Both trapped and used pelts for clothing, beding, etc. But the one major connection erik displayed that immediately made me think Richard Proenneke is the way erik filmed and edited his video. Richard was limited to 20-second silent clips. He would crank his camera, set it down, and film himself, building his log cabin by hand. Richards doc. consists of thos 20 second 8mm shots edited together to make a cohesive story come to life. Erik shot this video in HD, but every clip and scene is 20 seconds long. At first, i thought Erik created an HD version of Ricards 8mm crank camera. But i don't think that's what happened. I think Erik purposefully filmed it that way as a homage to richard. 20 shots cut together to show progress is such a distinctive look and feel. It can't be just a coincidence, right?

Without any doubt at all, this man just made the most beautiful yet simple artwork. The cabin itself, the documentation, the scenery, everything just shows this man's perseverance, dedication and appreciation of a sublime lifestyle. One day, if my son or yet myself does something remotely close to what this man has done, I'll be the happiest man alive. Congratulations and thank you for this masterpiece.
