Off Grid Cabin Time: Trespassers and Trees Down

My family moved to north Idaho in 1972 and we lived off grid as the new term goes for years. My dad died in 1991 living that way Still. He had propane lights and a Old vintage gas cook stove and still went into town for water. I was 12 when we started it and 14 when we built our first log cabin. We also hand dug a well 93 ft with a pulley and rope and a 5 gallon bucket. We'd dig 5ft square and 10ft deep and then shove premade wall supports down the well to keep it from collapsing. My younger brothers. 2 of them and both bigger by several inches and pounds would take turns digging in that icey, cold and dark hole. We had a small tractor to help with the pulling by the way. I admire you for trying the life. Remember. You need water. Food. Heat. Light. You can live without the light in the cabin all the time but you Need those first ones. And of course a secure home. But you have that. Nicely done.

I work for the Michigan department of natural resources and we used our tractors to place very large logs and stumps around our gates to people from going into the wildlife refuge and it works 95% of the time, but some people still destroyed their vehicles to get in.

@@toddsmith4704 Sorry Todd, but you're wrong. Congress passed a law.. Geez, back in the 70's? That anybody with any plot of undeveloped land size 'X' or bigger had to set aside a piece of the property as a wildlife refuge. I THINK it was Ducks Unlimited that pushed the idea if I recall. Anyway, it sets aside a little plot (in the scheme of things) where even if everywhere else gets over-hunted and disturbed, the animals can still do their thing and make babies and raise them. I remember the law intimately, because my moms family owns the majority of a county in Iowa. We had to pick a nice location, with water access and etc., run it past the DNR people, and fence it off and post it. Nobody sets foot inside that perimeter. Nobody hunts in there, and so far nobody has had to track an injured deer or anything in to there either. The ENTIRE point is that no people ever go in there. It's because some animals get spooked, and won't even mate if there are people around. PLEASE PLEASE PLEASE spread the word and let others know to skirt the wildlife refuge areas. It's the hunters last defense to ensure that the game in a given area doesn't disappear entirely. Of course, it's also a protected space for endangered animals and birds as well, so that's another thing to consider. Us hunters should be defending the wildlife refuge areas, scaring the looky-loo's off, not screwing with the DNR about it. FYI, the Bureau of Land Management (BLM) is the organization with an unconstitutional judicial system, strong arming people so that they can buy up their property. THEY are the ones you should be railing about, worried about and keeping in check. The DNR is mostly concerned with conservation and the environment.

I build fence for a living. You wouldn't believe how many times Ive adjusted or repaired someone's gate and also took the time to flip their top hinge. Makes me chuckle every time.

Biggest frustration I had was people that once used the land thought they had a right to continue to do so. They would get angry at me! I put signs up and they ignored them. I put gates up and they ignored them. I started confronting people with a shotgun. That got me a visit from the sheriffs and invited him in for coffee!

Same here, people tearing up my land with dirt bikes, four wheelers and horses, we put up fencing and gates. They'd cut or break whatever and always "Have a right to ride" people are nuts.

Having a guy down there you trust is probably the best answer as for security you can ask for. Good neighbors are definitely a plus. Good to see the trees down without them there for shelter you might want to run some T1 down that side about 4' down. Save Buck from wind and sun.

Northeast Homestead I heard them leaners called "widow makers". A hunting club use the let me take a cord every year and they were adamant... "Don't leave any leaners".

It looks like as the leaners are just not hanging over your cabin. Then you cutt it all down in peaces. Attach a rope as high near the crown as you can, preventing the trunk to roll to your cabin. Then cut the trunk above the ground where you can reach it comfortably; first cut above, stop before your saw get jammed; second cut from underside towards first cut, to meet a half inch down; sawing slowly to keep controll. Stepping back, slightly towards the stump, when things are moving. (Super safety when you cut a notch \| at the first cut.) Don't you hurry. Leaners are tricky.

Paint purple rings around your trees on your border and fence posts tops, this means no trespassing. And is legal signage in most states.

Built a lot of barbed wire fence on the home ranch in Montana. Be very careful taking the wire off the roll, if you don't control it the wire will come off like a spring uncoiling and I have scars on my legs I got as a teenager who did it "my way" instead of listening to others. Be careful and make sure you have the end of the wire weighed down or in control always. Enjoy your efforts and thanks for the postings.

if you have any cedar on the land that you need to remove. You could build you a split rail fence and use spikes to hold the rails together . They will weather and look old but still be strong, but like my grandfather says a lock or fence just keeps a honest person out.

tommy you could use old telephone pole for gate post. you could buy them used or get them free from the electric co. then wrap the poles in hardware wire so they cant be cut with a chain saw once installed also sink them deep so they can't be pushed over with the back of a truck. you could also put some bolts sticking out from the gate itself so it can't be pushed opened either. more big post and large rock's so they can't go around or over them

Chain the other side of the gate so if they unbolt the gate the gate will still hold and if you want to chain the top and bottom so you cant lay it over.

same problem on my property couple of years ago ,, took the gate off the hinges but what I did I put a lock on it with a chain one on top and one at the bottom that's what I did no problems after that...

You can get spring loaded forward facing spikes that go flush with your land you can cement them in and when you leave your property you lock them to rigid so anyone trying to drive over them end up with no tyres and when you return you set the to drop in there housing so you can drive over yourself.

hey neighbor, I'm in Ga., you may be able to get used power poles from you local emc free. I contacted my local emc to see how I could get a few he asked me how many I wanted I asked how much, free where do you want us to drop them......they dropped them where I left cones beside the drive way. I could have left them there as they were and it would have blocked people from going around the gate. instead I built a ..Guard rail like structure. a couple for posts with long ones across the top.

I have found the best way to deter tresspassers on atvs is barb wire set about 12 inches off the ground, it also does a good job when you just lay several pieces about 12 foot long long painted brown across your road. barb wire wrapped up in tires does a lot of damage and they normally end up with 4 flat tires , this works with atvs and motor vehicles.

Check your state laws Kim. Some states will let you blow people up with booby traps if you have your property clearly posted 'No Trespassing'. Some want all access to the property physically BARRED (more than just barbed wire) before you're allowed to set up traps. Then, in a select few states (you can probably guess which ones) you go to jail if you set out traps to catch people. Just be aware, and use your head. ;)

in reality all you can do is deter entry.. in reality locks and security are for honest people... if some one wants in they will get in.. but yes its tricky if it looks heavily protected, more reason to go in if your looking for something good. Best security is being onsite and ready to defend.

Heat the ends of the gate hinges and hammer them down, mushroom style. Can't come off then. Or weld a nice little bead around the ends. I had 2 gates stolen because I didn't take time to do the job right.. Never again.

Another thing you could consider is to dig a decent sized trench across your main driveway (2' wide by 2' deep by the width of your road. This will deter people getting into your property very far with a vehicle. You would just need to hide a couple of good sized planks in the trees/bushes so that authorized people could use them to bridge the ditch.

bwillan don't hide the planks on property, carry them in your vehicle, you're the only one that needs them. Also, be like the military, do NOT discuss when you will or won't be there (or somewhere else) in your videos, just discuss the past. Try not to be on a schedule either (every other weekend, etc). An obvious schedule will be figured out by someone you don't want to know it. +1 on the propane on demand hot water heater, those things are awesome, plan on using in my cabin (that or the electric version, just to keep everything running on the same energy source). As for the idea posted about more hunting cameras, the good ones are indeed spendy (as you said), but certain times of the year you can get older models being discontinued for pretty cheap, as long as the camera has good quality it doesn't matter what year the model or what color the factory painted it... Best keep out property I’ve seen was Timevalve’s location when they were still in Connecticut. They were installing a stainless exhaust on my car and the guy suggested I not go off the asphalt. The lot was surrounded by a 6 or 8 ft chain link fence topped with barbed wire strands. The fence and all green areas were a overgrown with poison ivy. I’d never seen so much or so high. There were sections of the fence you couldn’t see for the ivy.

2 foot pits dug in staggered pattern and covered with brush. All you gotta' do then is pick up all the wrecked 4 wheeler parts. The secret is to do something only you know about and not let anyone use your property. Probably was the neighbor you befriended that drove around the gate.

Something to consider is to grow a thorny bramble on both sides of the fence that extends 30-40 or mor feet down the property line. Who wants to try passing a tangle of thorns!👍🏽 it can be sourced for free or bought for a low cost. Either way good luck with your decision and your property. My dad never locked the house when we were gone and he never locked his truck. He said locks only keep honest people out anyway and when you lock the doors a thief will just break it to get in, then you've lost whatever they took PLUS the money it cost you to repair what they broke getting in to steal from you in the first place. Hey great video! I've had some experience with falling trees and having them getting hung up. Just a few recommendations for you. You may want to consider a come along winch rather than using your vehicle. I've used my vehicle as well... its always faster. Another recommendation for towing and or pulling trees are aircraft straps. These are are super strong and get a better hold on the tree when wrapping around to pull. Cheers!!

Another idea for your hot water set up is a compost system. I have not tried this but have encountered people who have and apparently it works great and if your intention at some point is to have gardens etc this may be a good way to start preparing your soil. So the idea is to coil pvc water pipe under a large pile of composting material. Just youtube compost water heater!

That is an awesome idea. In the summer that wouldn't be a problem but what about the cold weather? I wonder how hot it would get. I'm going to look into that. I've seen people use black hose and coil it on a roof or something but winter time or no sun that is a problem. Composting material may get it done. Thanks for mentioning it.

I've worked with a lot of people within agriculture and I know that composting creates massive heat.... even in the coldest of winter days. Some farmers have even incorporated this concept for heating barns.

I have a power line across my property also. The power company, SCE&G (South Carolina Electric & Gas) has their lock on the gate also. They told me that they only use locks that are keyed the same. So one key fits all access locks. That way any lineman can access the right of way with his issused key. If for some reason the key does not work they cut their old lock off, and replace it with one that does work with the issued key. Just a FYI from my experience with power company access

Blocking those illegal ATV trails with fallen trees is a great idea, if you also have any decent sized rocks on the property then you might think about building some Cornish hedges to block off the more major holes in you perimeter, they're a lot of work to make but they should be good for about 3 or 4 hundred years before they need looking at again.

Make sure you mark the barbed wire with tape as well so it is easy to see. My brother was quade driving on his friend's family property where they hunt and they didn't see the barbed wire and it almost took off my brother's head. His throat was cut ear to ear. Do what I do as a land owner. Put nails in 3/4" plywood 1foot by 1 foot put them in different spots on your road. Flat tires will get them off your road. And letting your neighbor have access is the perfect thing to do. Let him hunt or whatever, the more he is around he can run them off in person.

Buy several shooting targets. Lay them on the grass and shoot several holes near the centre circle. Position them easily visible at the entrance to your property.

fyi y eccotemp water heater 6 months 5showers per week on the same grill size propane tank. just got to have 25psi and a way to vent it. don't let it freeze. may only heat the water by 40 to 60 degrees warning then water temp so winters some showers not super hot

I sprayed lots of flowers seeds around my in laws property, and it paid off, they covered the barn wire and a few have been caught up on the fence ,they back up so fast that is laughable,lol, you can plant them after you install your fence, and hide some solar WiFi cams.BTW Like your video,😀, I'm also tired of giving away my money living in the city and further more when I grew up in the country and i have the knowledge of how to live off the grid, I don't have the excuse of not knowing things. At 10:50 If I were you....... I don't quite know your the surroundings and landscape from your perspective, but I would have backed Upton get enough slack in the chain to reposition your vehicle to pull the tree to the left about 35° pulling the tree in the position it's lined. Do what I did take a generator and wire welder out there and make sure it can't be taken off, and btw put some big pipe in the ground , people will have to tear mine to pieces to get it off and I usually set up trail cams that nobody knows about.

Here in Maine most folks leave their property open for all to use unless there has been someone abusing the privilege. Most property here are large tracts of land and mostly private. It's a nice gesture to allow others to enjoy the great outdoors for hiking, hunting, fishing etc. What part of the country are you in? Have you had problems with others leaving a mess or causing damage to your property?

I'm in SC. I have had some issues with people riding ATV's and rutting up my trail, leaving trash on my property. The person that owns land next to me said that he has had a few game cameras and a tree stand taken. I wouldn't feel at all comfortable leaving my cabin open to anyone that happened across it. Need a deep ditch or wear around your property apart from your entrances and that stop 4 by 4 vehicles from entering it needs to be narrow but very deep so the wheels get stuck

you know a security trench on the other side of your fence works wonders keeping people from driving their four-wheelers and their four by fours on your property . It looks like a drainage ditch it's big enough where if you drive a truck over it you'll get stuck you can't get a four wheeler Polaris up it or down it without getting it stuck to . And a well-maintained road also says that's somebody's down there so maybe a good-looking road who knows might help with the security .

A thick hawthorn hedge would work, they have thorns an inch and a half long all over them and they are great for wildlife, shelter, and food in one package. But seriously the only true security would be a room with no doors, the door/gate/lock are the points of failure most often used by thieves. Good luck.

Best way I've found for a gate area is old 2 3/8 drill pipe on each side of the gate as far as you can go with it,,, cant be driven threw or under it , and they won't bother trying to go around it if you can extend it a good reach, the used drill pipes pretty cheap ,easy to weld and comes in 30 foot joints

Use a chip heater for hot water, just uses twigs and small split wood to heat all the hot water you want.

Can you paint the fence posts purple, indicating 'no trespassing'? I believe that it has a legal consequence if you catch anyone in the property (in person or on video). Of course, it will not stop them but may give them pause to avoid legal action.

Purple paint may be in my future but if the gate and the dozens of NO TRESPASSING signs wasn't heads up enough, I'm not sure of the impact. I'd prefer to handle these people myself but if the law has to be involved I don't think an I didn't know I was trespassing defense would hold up. I have a great suggestion, its a little over the top. But fare. First tripmines. Second take the body and lay it as straight as you can. And poor acid over it. Hopefully you'll get a full skeleton. (Let's be real the trip mines already destroyed the legs.) Then take a wire and tie the bones together. And string it up in the trees. Hmmmmmm beautiful! The first few victi(cough cough) trespassers will stop the next few from comming. It will be wonderfull.

get a shit load of roses called hedge roses they go hog wild and benefit is fence line , also raspberry , thistles anything that puts out thorns will stop 85% of the critters two legged and four legged then also drop fence post every 12 foot then drop a shorter post every 6 ft

Put up a sheep wire fence and two strands of barb wire across the top like we do here in Texas. I'll come help if you need any.
