A sunrise Land Rover convoy followed by an off-road event with the amazing Land Rover community of Japan.
We were surprised by Land Rover Japan with the presence of the 2020 model Land Rover Defender 110.
It was the fist time we had seen it for real and we were even taken for a ride on the off-road course.
We have been asked many times what the think of the new Defender, in this video we tell all.
Join us as we travel the world overland, exploring the cultures and traditions of all the countries we visit.
In our Land Rover Defender camper which is our full time home we will take you rock climbing, hiking and exploring across all the continents on this planet.

The new defender is a big disappointment, that doesn't mean I'm against modernising vehicles but they've got the new defender completely wrong. It's just a posh suv that must be a nightmare to work on without taking it to a dealership every other day. It's for a new generation I suppose, but i certainty don't like it. Having said that what a great crowd to spend the day with, looks like a lot of fun👍🏼

@@Archiepopop I would get a 79 series land cruiser personally, but regarding this new defender 18-20 inch rims,air suspension here in Africa forget it, people who don't live in remote places or under developed countries with very rough terrain and very bad roads don't understand that air suspension, large rims designed for tarmac driving with very low profile tyres and total dependence on electronics does not work and if it has any kind of issue which I'm sure it will have many more than the original, to have to be taken to a dealership to be fixed is ridiculous. There is an average of about 1 land rover dealership every 1000km out here, how is this new vehicle practical for this part of the world? At least with simpler 4x4s not just classic defenders most issues are fixable in remote parts of Africa. The average good mechanic in small African towns or villages will not be able to fix one of these new ones without expensive high tech tools and equipment with proper training, whereas an old land cruiser or old defender or suzuki or hilux etc no worries. I'm not saying that the original is perfect and that it shouldn't have ever been changed. It definitely needed modernising especially with regards to safety. The original has countless flaws and issues as we know but one thing on it's side is simplicity and that it's quite easy to fix. This new defender is way too complicated for this part of the world, refer to kiss..I'm not picking a fight, just giving you a different perspective that's all. Thanks

@@willcowell8197 Your point and experience has been totally ignored by the new Land Rover team, which considering where there from I really don't get. They have gone all in on the suv market ignoring LR's core markets - military and NGO's. We will see if they stick with the new one or ditch it for a cheaper, simpler more rugged alternative. Sadly I think the Defender has run its coarse and will be dropped soon.
@willcowell8197
@willcowell8197 3 жыл бұрын
@@ogribiker8535 well said and a good point regarding their former customers. Here in Kenya from the military, ngo's, safari tour operators, parastatal, farmers, police you name it a good majority of vehicles they used were land rover defenders, but nowadays that market has been handed over to the mighty 70 series Toyota land cruiser range which are fantastic vehicles for this part of the world in fact the best I would say..easy to modify and work on like the original defender is. Sad that land rover have completely crushed that heritage and given away a huge market. Again the original did need modernising but what they've created is just another luxury suv designed by clueless accountants in fancy glass tower office blocks. The grenadier will be interesting, I'm sure it will have flaws but will possibly be a more worthy successor of the original defender but we will see.

Based on some of the other documented experiences, I would not take a new Defender the same places you've taken yours. You've managed to acquire parts and had service performed by people that might not necessarily have a lot of experience or technical documentation specific to your truck, and they've been successful even to the point of rebuilding axle components. A new Defender is a modern electronics-heavy car that's loosely Defender-shaped. It requires factory support and if the experiences the TFL people have had are any indication, even factory support is not adequate at times. Your truck is the culmination of a legacy of decades of building for durability, simplicity, and to an extent serviceability. The new vehicle bears the name but has none of that pedigree and is unsuited to leaving regions beyond a single fuel tank's range from an official Land Rover service center.

Hey Leigh and Steph, I noticed in your video at 8:41 it seems like your primary shock mounting bolt (the forward shock) appears to have movement in it rather then the dampening cusion. Might pay to have a look at the attachement point on the chassis to ensure there isn't a minor fracture or crack in the mounting point because the bolt shouldn't be moving.

A plastic label on the bonnet a Defender/110/Series does not make. I vote they call it a 110-D5 and market it as a tribute, not a replacement. But I don't think Tata are that interested in anything but the rupees. It's a shame Toyota didn't buy JLR, I suspect they would have honoured the history more.

Guess there are a few trails there, though I can imagine most of those Defender spend 99% of their time as expedition showboats on the streets of Japan-not unlike most Defenders in most countries I suppose. Looks like a great group of dedicated Defender lovers. Land Rover heaven. I love seeing the old Range Rover classics. Didn't get to see the Citroen up close though.:( Love the new Defender. We may consider one in the future for an overland build, but so far it seems like JLR is unable to deal with computer issues. They said in the past that they would be able to diagnose the new Defender via satellite, but they are having issues diagnosing even in the shop. I think we are going to stick with our LR3. I am removing the air suspension in ours in favour of coil springs. I am trying to make it is a simple as possible. Great video guys!

That dark grey Range Rover looked in good nick - was it? Also, how’s the reliability been on the air bags you’ve fitted?

It's all good, except for one thing: its name. To me, it's the new Land Rover 'nth usual looking modern comfy SUV'. I just don't see where the 'Defender' is. Besides that, wow! Great video, great people, great cars, amazing team!

Main problem of all new cars... they are designed as „disposable“. Spare parts are sold for 5-10 years and after that the manufacturer wants to force you into buying a new car. That is why my „new” Land Rover is over 40 years old. That one will be on the road until they stop selling petrol and than it is easy to convert it to an electrically engine.

In my (entirely unimportant) opinion, the new Defender would be awesome for a soccer mom living way out in the middle of nowhere with occasionally bad conditions and gravel roads, but I simply can't see it as a serious overland or off-road vehicle. There are too many electronics to go bad and the driver has no control of what the vehicle is doing. No amount of electronics can ever replace hundreds of hours of experience, driving, understanding the trail and what the vehicle is capable of. All that's needed off-road is good tires, some diff locks and a bit of experience. The new Defender takes all of that away and you don't really experience offroading or overlanding.

New Defender is made incorporating the North American soccer mom SUV platform to target the American Market. Land Rover should bring back its iconic defender back

New Defender? Awesome tech. Awesome 4 x 4 system. But why? What is it for? There is already the Discovery and Range Rover. It’s just another SUV, not a competitor for Wrangler or LC 200GX. Definitely not an actual replacement for the utility of the Defender.

-Hey man... and why is your 2020 Defender stuck in that remote valley in Afghanistan?" -Aaah mate... yeah... see, the parking brake is normally released automatically but...you know... changed its bloody mind in Afghanistan..." Majestic overlanding machine (on 19" or 20" wheels...) #not

The new defender is nice but full of technology that will fail sooner rather than later and it's useless then as it will leave you stranded. It needs to be taken to a specialist to get it repaired so you will be stuck for a long time if you are in the middle of nowhere. The old defender can be fixed with the simplest of tools and any old mechanic can fix it.

"Would you drive it around the world, obviously not" - and there it is, that's essentially the argument why this new Defender will never replace the old... As nice as it may be, you would be foolish to take it overlanding, too much to go wrong, too technical to fix in the wild (imagine Nikolay trying to fix that for you! The man's a mechanical genius, but I would imagine even he'd shy away from all the electronics in there...) No doubt its a great on/off road vehicle, but unless they will make a version with all the electronics stripped back to bare minimum, then its days as the rugged go-anywhere, utility vehicle are over... But no worries, yours and many 1000's of others will live on likely longer than these new ones will ;-) I miss mine...

Hi,there! salut Stéph , Hello Leigh ! I gonna write in French it'll be easyer ;-) Alors voilà... le nouveau Defender est certes très beau...
