The Harsh Reality of Off Grid Life: Gardening in the High Desert at High Elevation

Living off grid is not for the faint of heart, and trying to grow a garden at 3500ft doesn't help! It's the height of summer and we're still learning to adapt to everything nature sends our way. From snow that covers our Jeep in winter, to extreme heat with no A/C in summer - we're still here, doing it.

We're John and Greta and we've been living off grid in eastern Washington since 2020. We're just a couple Gen X-ers, minding our business, getting back to basics, and enjoying the comforts that make life worth living.
Our farm is in a high desert region, meaning water is scarce. In winter, temps can dip below -30F and it snows a lot! Despite the challenges, we're happy here growing our food, creating our power from solar and wind, chopping firewood, and baking from scratch. We live simply and work with what we have.

We're trying! Having water makes a huge difference where, in years past, we didn't have as much. How are your beans doing (or was it peas?) I get them confused.

@@LoveOffGrid Our field peas have not appreciated the rapid change from cold weather to blisteringly hot 🥵 Eesh, farmers will always have something to complain about though 😂

They have 250w portable ac units, close off a small area for all of you, nice spot to cool off. 1kw every 5 hrs.

We bought a small one for the bedroom in case we need it to sleep. So far, it's been cool enough in the evenings that a fan is enough. Hopefully, it won't last too long! Stay cool yourself!
