A little Q&A under all off grid lighting at the cabin. Combined with an inspirational message stop putting a price on all of your time. What are you worth. Insulation in the log cabin. It’s healthy to have fresh air coming into your home.

Brownstown, Indiana here. I came to this channel for the Cabin. Stayed for everything else. You've opened my eyes to the possibilities. You also opened them to the world of functional antiques. Not just something one buys for decorations. Lastly, I didn't realized where you were in Ohio. I've passed through there in my semi many times.

From NW Wyoming near Jackson. Your statement that whatever you spent on the cabin you'd have otherwise spent on therapy is absolutely true. We bought property and spent the past three years building a small frame house that we absolutely love, and the wonder of it was that in living our lives with purpose we avoided 95 percent of the angst that gripped the country over viruses, lockdowns, and shortages. Our house, while simple and rustic in style, is modern construction. Our next project is renovating a tiny log cabin as a writer's retreat for my husband that will double as a guest cabin. I love what you've done with yours.

from Manila, Philippines! I'm rather young so I don't have any specific memories about natural light, I grew up with harsh fluorescent lights and TVs and Radios blaring out around the home, but yet I still feel a connection, a nostalgia for an experience I've never had. candle light and a crackling hearth is my dream.

Howdy brother- living in a log home is a chosen lifestyle. Since I teach how to build log cabins I will travel to other areas to build. Right now I’m 190 miles from home building a cabin for people who want their dream to become a reality. Since I have those skills I can do that for those who don’t have the skills and at the same time I can share on our KZbin channel the information needed to do that for which I’m very thankful. Thank you so much for sharing your journey and life style you have chosen. God’s blessings to you

Jerry we live in Fromberg, MT and we love the natural light. My husband was admiring your candle holders, he is a blacksmith, using a coal forge. I wish I could share photos of his work; he made me a gorgeous candle chandelier with copper wax catcher trays. We've lived in our 1910 farmhouse for 23 yrs and we are still renovating it back to that era. We are almost there; my husband is currently smithing me an iron banister with wood handrail. Our farmhouse has the original windows, with wavey glass, the previous owner added aluminum storms, but we still feel the air coming in, when cold, we simply close the insulated drapes.

Greetings from southern British Columbia. My husband and I have been watching your channel for about 2 months now and look forward to each and every episode. Although we'll never live in a log cabin we can live vicariously through you! We grew up close to the city of Vancouver but moved to a small town (pop 2800), in the country, 31 years ago to raise our family. Since then I embraced and learned the homesteading lifestyle. To date I can make sourdough bread, soap, spin/weave, dutch oven cook, make cheese, can/preserve, and make beer/wine to name a few. I sew on an antique Singer treadle sewing machine. I come from British heritage, going back hundreds of years, so I don't have an ounce of homesteading blood in my veins. I just decided one day when the world crashes I want to be self-sufficient and know the homemaking skills that the pioneers had. Thank you so much for your content.

What a beautiful and fascinating video. Lighting is such an interesting topic and quite possibly the most taken-for-granted modern “luxury”. It’s mostly impossible to function (or survive) without light, but thankfully easy to acquire. And maybe that’s what makes natural light so intriguing and attractive, in that in its simplest form it is often the most pure. I’m from Lisbon, Ohio!

I grew up on the opposite end of ten acres from my grandparents in Washington state. My grandparents had no electric heat or running water. They had a tall hand pump out side that was used to carry water into the house for the day and a small hand pump on the porch just for needed. She cooked on a wood cookstove every day and they had a wood furnace to keep the house warm especially at night. My dad unhooked the furnace in our 3 bedroom trailer and put in a wood heat stove which is what we used for heat! I miss those days and really want to get back to them! I now live in Utah! I really enjoy your videos!!

Jackson county Ohio here. I’m an ex-offgridder, not even solar panels for over two years. Just my wife and our teenage daughter. We understand fully how candle and lamp life feels. It was a memory that we’ll cherish forever. Especially those long winter evenings, shortened only by games of Scrabble, Rummy, Trivial Pursuit and darts. We read a lot of books and ruined our eyes but it was enlightening. We are about to embark on another log cabin build, our third and my last. We aren’t going big or completely authentic (our view demands a lot of windows) but it will traditional with, once again, no electric. I hope that when we’re done, you’ll come visit some time.

@@logcabinlifestyle, we moved to Montana for a time. It never occurred to us that people still lived totally off grid until we saw how many people were doing so in the mountains with absolutely no modern utilities, or at least the bare minimum. When we moved back to care for my parents, we were rather strapped so we tried it. If it wasn’t for my teenage daughter’s revolt, we might never have gotten electric again. Even now our electric is very limited. We are nearly 3/4 mile from our meter and have less than 90 volts at our house. Barely enough to run a pump on our well and then we have to turn off other things. We do have LP gas to heat our water and some of the cooking but we heat entirely with wood and do most of our cooking with wood. Also have an LP frig. We poop in an outhouse, so needless to say, we aren’t all that popular amongst our families, lol. Which is probably the biggest drawback to living this way. Oddly enough my “revolting” daughter, now lives just fifty yards or so away (sharing our limited electric with her) and is planning to get back off the grid as well. Anyway, love your channel brother. Keep it simple.

It’s always a pleasure to view what you do and have achieved. Very inspiring Q&A especially what you shared about time and its value! Howdy Sir! I'm sending thanks for your channel from down in Wilson County, Tennessee (one county east of Nashville). I really enjoyed the info on lighting! When you note that sharing your journey triggers memories in others, you are spot on! I volunteer at our local historical village and help run a local cast iron cooking club. Every time I show up in a public space and cook over fire, the memories of others flow like a river! Year over year I am fortunate to help school field trip kids learn about life in what we think of as the pioneer period here in Middle Tennessee. When I started out years back, I thought I'd tech it all out: videos, multimedia content, etc. But one day I just decided to start a fire in a firepit behond one of our village's cabins and cook some lunch for myself on the fire... I'd never seen kids and adults alike start sharing and asking questions like that! So many folks linger with me at the fire, sharing memories of when they were kids, or how grandparents did things, etc. All it takes is some firewood and a little bit of my time. Which, as you note, our time is never best defined in terms of money - I believe our time is best judged by our ability to create meaningful experiences for ourselves, our families, and for others. And time spent with you through your videos is always meaningful for me! Thanks again.

Live in Tiffin, Ohio. The ambience of this place is so wonderful many years ago back in the 70s I used to volunteer at Ohio Village at the Ohio historical Society in Columbus. Hope you’re well keep the videos coming when you have time.

Great video. I’m just northeast of Toronto Canada. Just bought a cottage property and it will need some work but I’m looking forward to it.

Beautiful rustic cabin, friend- Our’s is much the same except we aren’t off grid- We still use our oil lamps though and burn wood in our wood-stove- It works for us for now- And we are your neighbors to the west in the great state of Indiana - All the best

Hello sir. Enjoyed the visit. I’ve always thought a house needs airflow. People spend soooo much money on airtight and comfort. Then you see a little mold at the top of the wall or on bathroom ceiling. Anyway I realize in extreme climate you have to but in Paris TN it’s pretty mild. Pretty cold for 10-14 days a year and dang hot for 20-30. The rest is gravy

Hello Jerry. We are in Southern UK in the Somerset levels, out in the sticks. We have used paraffin lamps for many years and love it. The wonderful 'warm white' colouration from the lamps, especially in the winter is so comforting also the byproduct of the heat the lamps produce is so very welcome.

Am a retiree in California. I'm on grid but try to live as much off grid as I can. Knowing tough times are coming I live using as little of resources as I can to practice for when things get really bad (hoping that's far off). ie, bathe only once a week to save hot water gas heating costs, no hot water in sink but with plenty of soap to clean things. Cooking meals outdoors, haven't used stove for 2 years. Point is I have many candles and gallons of lamp oil but don't use it till it's the only thing left. So I'm with you to save all your resources and be very very prudent. I work hard always gathering and sawing wood to store as I heat only with woodstove. Haven't used HVAC in years either. I'm 68 and pretty arthritic and alone but I get my chores done every day! I think and value the same kind of living as you do. God bless everyone.
