It is sooooo nice to see you two young people make this CABIN. My dad built one in 1923 and another when I was born in 1946. I had great times in it. It was on one of three small islands. We fished there on Nickel Lake, Nova Scotia , Canada, having the sounds of loons lulling us to sleep. So, I can relate to you guys enjoying the peace and serenity of your cabin in the WOODS. I am very happy for you two . And your sharing of the simple pleasures and living in nature is what is all about. Thank you. 👏👏👏👏

I've been thinking about what kind of kitchen cabinets to get in my cabin and here I am 62 yrs old and I've built furniture and cabinets from milling my own trees and it never occurred to me to pick up somber and just DIY until I saw this video. Sometimes we are so busy looking at the big picture we miss the small important things.

Good for you for be totally independent unlike tons of people your age. You need a plow so you could drive to/from your cabin anytime. Even though your off grid you want to make things as easy as possible. Prepare, prepare, prepare.

your cabin looks nice. One thing I would not like is, that the stove is right against the wall. Some space on the left would be a must for me. But, other then that, I think it should be great to live in such a cozy space.

-If you replace the rope on your sled for a thicker one it'll be less strain on your hands. -Get a 2nd smaller sled so Sara can help out and you won't have to make more trips. -Place a magnet on the door so have something to hold the latch. This will prevent you from grazing that latch, which I'm sure has happened more than once. -Since you have the propane tank inside, when you're just about done with cooking flip it off at the tank, let that little bit of gas born off then turn off the stove. I've been doing this for years and it really saves you on gas, especially since your hiking it in.

Hey Ryan, do you have a well? What are you using for solar? I'm off grid near Mora.
@dermody25 жыл бұрын
Yes, we do. Tried my hand at pounding a sand point, but to no avail. This past summer we had our buddy come out with a rig and drilled down 64 feet with good, pure water. Before that, hauled water since 2012 when we moved out here. Our solar unit is outback inverter, 1000 watts of panels and a kilowatt of lead battery storage. If ya ever want to talk shop, hit me up! My buddy, Tom Strom, up in Ely is an alternative energy guru who helped install my solar stuff. He lives on Will Steger’s stead. .
@jimsteele71085 жыл бұрын
@@dermody2 , that's awesome! I'm pretty low key. I pack in water but I'm planning for rain catchment. I use a sawdust toilet. I have 100 watts of solar. A 12 volt fridge will make ice and 2 - 12 volt UPS batteries store power. Lights are 12 volt LED. Tiny cabin is 8x16 but it suits me fine. Oh... mini wood stove is mandatory as far as I'm concerned. I have about $18k in the cabin and 7 acres, I love that part.
@dermody25 жыл бұрын
That’s simply awesome man! I admire the heck out of what you’re doing and will follow your journey here! Heating with wood is the best, especially when its free if you can cut and chop yourself.
@jimsteele71085 жыл бұрын
@@dermody2 , I've been kicking around the idea of a solar heater to supplement during the sunny winter days. They are a cheap build with lots of youtube info available. A guy can really be frugal if he's patient. I'm constantly searching Craigslist for a deal. I love doing morning breakfast and coffee on the wood stove and on occasions, I'll put a cast iron meal right inside the firebox. There's just something so cool about being in that cozy little cabin when -20 outside, I just love it.
