A few tips for you. Inverter is very inefficient by about 10-15%, it has to convert 12v into AC, which generates lots of heat, and requires a fan to cool. Avoid the inverter at all costs, find 12v chargers for your devices, this will make your battery last way longer. You can use any solar panel, you dont have to over pay for Goal Zero's proprietary and weak solar panel, for the same price you can buy a couple of flexible 100W Renogy panels which are easy to store and super light, wire em up in parallel, and find the mc4 to Goal Zero converter to allow you to plug these in. Also look into suoaki which has a 400w lithium solar generator, is cheaper, and doesnt use proprietary connectors. happy cruising

Thanks Vlad for the input. You definitely know what you're talkin about. I'm still trying to figure out why they make power supplies to plug into 240 volt Outlets when the device only requires 5 volts. I guess it's for people who don't need to care about power consumption. If a device can run on 12 volts it needs to be run on 12 volts are you are wasting electricity. Having to run an inverter for such devices is a waste.
@matboyrd
@matboyrd 5 жыл бұрын
Youre're correct on the inverter. Just turning it on pulls 7 watts. Thats more power used than charging a cel or tablet via the other options. Also, as to the point about the 2 proprietary 12v ports made in the vid, you can get cables that have the classic "cig lighter" female end to allow them to be used with standard 12v cables.

@@kenjboyd6233 it's likely because a lot of the devices are manufactured where 220-240 volts is common (everywhere but north america)

Thank you for the info. I bought mine in July to have just in case we lose power in the house. We have a gas powered generator that my husband has to carry out side and operate, but I wanted something in case the power goes off when he wasn't home and I'm in a wheelchair and needed to have a light, fan or be able to charge my iPad and phone. Just this week I've had to use it twice. I love it. I am now home schooling my granddaughter and we were able to continue on with our lessons by having our iPad and hotspot charged up. It was really quite too. I have the solar panel in the box still but sounds like I may need to order that 30 ft ext. Cord. Thanks again.

Yeah... but the lithium grade is an upgrade from his unit he has the same one I have and it's like I bought what I got and then a month later they started selling the lithium ones showed me I was like I want a refund and the right ones but it is what it is 4 years later mind still works fine just doesn't work for anything other than charging my phone and running my LED lights. I've been paid almost $100 for a special cord that they said I needed and still can't run anything off of the yeti 400 search me I don't know I think I just flushed that $600 down the toilet but maybe it's because I don't use it with solar panels attached and it only came with the 30 watt solar panels.

Great review, thanks! I've been using a similar setup, a Goal Zero Yeti 400 with three Boulder 15 panels, for at least 4 year now and am on my original battery and have also found that the case has held up extremely well. If you keep the charge level up above 60% it'll last a long time. Sealed lead acid batteries are heavy, but they're readily available and not too expensive to replace. It's nice that Goal Zero makes swapping the batteries very easy. I use Goal Zero's adapter cables to run my Boulder panels and DC charge from my vehicle in parallel, which is a nice feature. While many complain about Goal Zero's proprietary ports, they offer adapters to DC accessory ports, ring connectors, and anderson connectors, so that makes everything pretty standard. I had originally planned to build a higher capacity (both battery and inverter) setup, but found that while I could build something very high quality and swap out components as I liked, I ultimately found that it would be very expensive, larger, heavier, and more complex. With Goal Zero you get a compact, convenient, and very useful product at a reasonable price, which I ultimately decided gave me more options. I've been very happy with that decision.

I got lucky and purchased this unit for $20 from a tag sale in Ma. Now i decided to buy a 100w rockpal panel instead of the goal zero. The panel was cheaper, foldable and more wattage. I also purchased the goal zero lights that chain up together and they work very well and barely use any power. We do a lot of camping and the set up has worked well for us

the Yeti 400 is a tank of a product. i've put mine through hell over the last decade. it was truly ahead of its time. in the cargo area we had ours chained to (2) mighty max lead acid batteries. gave us a ton of extra juice. at the time there were no boulder 50's or 100's. the options were boulder 15, 30, and 90. we bought (4) boulder 30's and the tripod, and also chained (2) 15's to the linkage as well. charged the yeti 400 up quickly

I have a Goal Zero 1400 with 2 100 watt panels as well as dual batteries on my rig so power is not a problem at all. As Solo Over 50 rightly said below, Goal Zero has come out with a charging cable allowing for car recharge but website reports said cables not in stock or sold out. Another way around this difficulty is to mount a small inverter in your rig and then plug your Yeti into the inverter for recharge. There is some power loss through the inverter as others rightly posted on so there is that. You can also mount fixed solar panels on your rig and recharge as you drive that way as well.Great video TrailRecon and glad to see the Goal Zero being considered as a camp power option especially.

Hi Brad. Just a comment about your Yetti. The lithium version which is model 500x. DOES charge off of your car system. It has its own battery management system so your car charging system does not make a difference. The big disadvantage is the battery is not chainable. Your channel is terrific. Thanks for all your hard work

You can use and charge the lithium unit in your jeep, the work around is to plug it into your factory ac outlet. The Yeti pulls about 56-76 watts usually at max, which is well under the 150 rating of the built in inverter (Assuming that you have the ac inverter option of course). They are also working on a charge cable which will probably be a DC to DC converter to get the voltage closer to being above 14V to make the charging more reliable, as even the 12 volt will work when running "usually" as your output is generally closer to 14 volts when the Jeep (Or other vehicle, but is there really any others vehicles we need to care about :) ) running, but that is close to the low end on the Yeti for charging so it makes sense they don't support it, as it's probably inconstant. If you don't have the built in AC inverter, getting an aftermarket one rated for say 300 to 1000 watts (please avoid the cheap Walmart 29.95 ones though, as they are complete junk, a decent unit will run about 75- 100 bucks and avoid ones that plug into your cig lighter type connection as it can't really pull enough power safely, they should wire or jump directly to your battery) is fairly cheap and would also do the job (And be good to have for other things). I wouldn't buy the non lithium unit, as long term the battery performance shouldn't last as well as the lithium.

Victron makes several DC/DC converters of various capacities. I use one to charge the lithium battery in my trailer from my 4Runner while driving. It bumps up the voltage from the vehicle alternator to voltage you can set yourself. I set mine to 14.2 volts and it works fine charging the lithium battery. If you don't use an isolated DC/DC converter with LiFePO4 batteries, they will drain to the vehicle battery and overcharge it.

Took the 400 and 150 on a weeklong trip. Takes a long time to charge with the panels and you constantly have to adjust the angles of the panels to get optimal charging. I liked having the 150 to run LED tent lights. I was never in camp for more than two days. So keep the 12v charger to charge them in your rig.

Goal Zero claim a small inverter that you can plug into your accessory port in the Jeep will charge the lithium version while you drive. But you need to buy that small inverter of course. But the upside is, a 33 amp/hr lithium battery is a legit 33 amp/hrs of use unlike the AGM that is only really good for 1/2 of that without decreasing the life of the battery. I use the Yeti 400 AGM with 2 Flexopower 79 watt panels. Works pretty well.

I just watched your video on the Yeti 400. I have the Lithium model and I heard you say you couldn’t charge it by 12 volts. My battery is getting old so I thought about getting a lead acid for mine but then I found where you can purchase from Goal Zero a charge cable (cigarette lighter to Goal Zero input) that works with 12 volts. Long story, when your battery dies or you want to drop some weight you could go with a Lithium battery. Some day when I get my Jeep upgraded enough I would love to make a trip you sometime. My problem is I’m west of Austin Texas about 30 miles and I’m not getting any younger. 😂

I have the 150 and 400 and the 1200. Biggest difference battery hours available and power draw it can handle. The 150 does NOT have Anderson plugs to add additional batteries as it comes. These have been amazing. If using the 12v recharge I highly recommend adding an aftermarket 12v outlet. It will recharge twice as fast as the factory Jeep and other vehicles use 18 guage or smaller! Wires. So it will recharge...just wont recharge as fast.

You mentioned you ran your refrigerator and charged your camera batteries and laptop, all of which fits my needs perfectly. However, what refrigerator are you running and from what port? DC or AC? I belong to three teardrop pages as I prepared to order one and am looking for those remote times when we may not have power en route to a destination with a night or two boondocking, or simply to have the ability to run a Dometic unit when not in the camper at all. I watched another review with the Yeti 1000, and it ran a very sizeable Dometic for 80 hours straight. Until that time that I need that kind of power, I'll either just go with a solar panel for the existing AGM 115 amp battery in the trailer or consider using that along with the Yeti 400. Glad to see so many others add to your review, which I thought was well presented and quite thorough...thanks!

Hey Brad, I would imagine when you turn on the AC button it turns on the inverter. Any time the inverter is on it is generating some heat which is all the energy that you lose when converting DC to AC. That's probably the energy loss that the screen is registering. There may also be some fans that come on to dissipate the heat the inverter generates too. Similar to what happens when you leave a standard phone charger plugged into the wall; it will stay warm even if there is no cable plugged into it because any time power is running through it, there is heat that results from going from AC to DC. Hope that helps!

We have the Yeti 150. Considerably less capacity, but much better price point (got it at $160, 20% off at REI). Major differences, one less AC, I think the inverter is different (400 is pure sine, 150 is modified), one less Goal Zero proprietary port, and the LCD is garbage. Only has battery 0-100 in 20% increments, no info on wattage/volts in or out. Also went with lead acid to charge in the vehicle over long drives.
@the-dullahan

He mentions the price point of this compared to a dual battery system, which makes no sense to me. His requirements were to have a solar panel and being able to take this from one vehicle to another. The GoalZero Yeti 400 costs [way] more than setting up a second battery will be, a second battery can use a solar panel, and a second battery can be taken from one car to another (I shift mine based on which vehicle I'm going to be in for each road trip). The Yeti 400 is made primarily for situations where you won't have a car to use for power, and in those situations it works great. But for the comparison he's making, a second battery will not only cost substantially less, it will power substantially more.

Just listened to your intro for a second time. So I take it you're not using dual batteries.

Hello Brad. Love your videos. I have a question about your setup. You noted that at one point during the weekend when you were challenged by overcast skies, you plugged your fridge into your Jeep to keep it running. In general, how do you do that? Do you operate with a second, deep cycle battery under your hood? Did you start your Jeep to recharge your Goal Zero and operate the fridge off your crank battery? Do you have a cigarette lighter/12v outlet in your car that feeds off your crank battery that doesn't require a key in the ignition to operate. I've watched your videos closely and I'm not clear on your configuration. Thanks.

Thanks for the great video. Since you are using a lead acid battery is there a problem with fumes in your vehicle or should I be concerned with using that battery inside my small camper (4'x4'x8')?

My experience with Goal Zero is the gear works well but is a lot more expensive and lower performing for the price than alternatives. I know in one comparison a Jackery unit that was about 40% less expensive actually put out more power.

goal zero uses much higher quality components, and has much better heat dissipation due to the aluminum case (also more rugged). customer service is also superior. the new "X" series goal zero line is hands down made for true outdoor enthusiasts

@@ScottenJonesVideo My (2) Yeti 150's and (2) Yeti 400's are almost a decade old. bought when they first came out and replaced the previous Escape 150 / Extreme 350 models. they have all been to hell and back. Jackery is peddled by influencers, goal zero is used by enthusiasts

@@jgg204 I disagree. Very happy with my Jackery, I have owned Goal Zero products before and while they worked fine they cost more than other higher performing alternative.

I was looking for an introduction something like this. Thanks a lot, it is clear to me know to make the final decision to purchase this product. Did you need any device in between the refrigerator and the Yeti, since the constant 12V might fail?

Ran my Hisense freezer off the 1400 Yeti, for 24 hours. Question ❓ I got is are you running your fridge while charging the yeti? What effect does this have on an OME battery?

When you hit the AC button it kicks on the inverter from DC to AC which will cause a draw

The AC uses power because it has to run an inverter, which has a fan and more that constantly run.
