Great video! Please note that the LightSaver Max's integrated panel is 10W, not 20W. That said, it is designed to charge in 8-10 hours of full sun, so, depending on where you are, you can fill it up in a day. Additionally, while the end caps definitely increase water resistance, we advise not leaving the product out in the rain. A little water won't pose an issue, but the LightSaver Max could stop working if submerged.

First thing I did with all my Powerfilm panels was chop the connectors off and replace with Anderson PowerPoles to standardise. Plus, get a cheap USB-C to 12v board off eBay, and connect again to PowerPoles and you now have USB output from either your charge controller, or in a pinch, straight from the panel. Oh, and those connectors you showed are micro-USB, not mini.

This was just awesome I certainly wish that my mother could have seen this God Rest her soul. At one point she told me that I was born out of time, she said I should have been bored during the Mountain Man times. I looked at her and smiled really big and told her that I was born in the right time because now I could live in the woods and still have electricity and she kind of giggled and I'll try to explain it to her but she was not that text savvy. But I sure wish you could have seen this video she would not understood it but I could have tried to explain it to her. You're right there's a cord for everything and a solar panel and charger to charge it. I took two of those small power bricks from 4patriot ran them down to just one light showing on. I'll set them in full sunlight rotating them with the Sun 5 days straight and I never got any more charge than just that one little light. Now if you charge them up they do great but I haven't gotten them to charge by the sun yet. I still carry them around with me everywhere I go and I still use them I'm not getting down on 4Patriot yes that they don't do what they say they'll do. I certainly did love this video and I'm sorry it made my comment go so long but I'm certainly going to look into that solar film packet as of right now I haven't checked to see if you left a link but I hope you did. Anyway have a great day and stay safe and keep your powder dry and your batteries!

Nice video. Great minds think alike. I've been doing more with battery power packs in the woods lately. -Mostly because I have them as aux. power for cameras. Then I thought if I have these batteries with me, I could think of them for survival use (if necessary, if the situation arises). But I haven't been getting into solar yet. It is something to think about. Thanks again for the videos. God bless.

solar is my backup power at home, but my primary power for daily use is my truck, which runs on renewable solar energy, i pickup batteries ready to fuel the truck on the side of the road or the scrap pile at work. it runs on woodgas, gassifier in the bed. any chunk of wood is stored solar energy, i can throw it in the truck and run down the road for transportation at the same time using the power generated by the truck to charge any needed electronics. alternative energy, its fun AND sustainable if done right

The Powerfilm brick has a 20W Panel, so I asume that the build-in charge controller and the electronics around it are dimensionied to fit the 20W. Before attaching a larger solar panel you should definitely check if the "brick" is made to receive so much power. There is a mistake in the video that could confuse people: Dave called the adapter cable he showed: "USB to mini USB", and he sais "mini USB" again and again. But what he showed and meant is: "micro USB".

Had a couple of "all-in-ones". If the battery permanently fails, you have a heavy solar cell. If the cells fail you have a bulky battery. I keep my power and cells separate. A good cell system with a few power bricks is the way to go.

The issue with this is the powerfilms is it is just priced out of range of most hobbyist. 500+ solar panel to go along with a 1k radio + 200-400 dollar CW key. + reputable battery you're looking at 2k without even adding accessories or gear bags. I'd love to have one but its not happening for me at least unless I get a job paying significantly more.

weird question as so many use solar panels for all sorts, is there a solar water distillery pump for fresh and salt water as most salt water ones use a lot off human energy, i would be salt or fresh only but only solar ones i have seen are the blow up tent ones. Never a solar electric power one.
@jeffblaske29082 жыл бұрын
Sea water desalination, usually done with reverse osmosis, requires a lot of energy to get adequate pressure and usable flow rate. It would take a rather large solar panel to provide sufficient power. Desalinators on boats are generally powered by the engine.

Hey Dave, I'm pretty sure lead acid batteries required discharging entirely before recharging. These days most gadgets are lithium ion, for maximum longevity lithium batteries prefer to be kept between 50 and 90 percent charge as the contraction and expansion is what causes wear and tear on the cells. If you've discharged your lithium battery entirely, it's best to charge it in stages so that the cells dont expand too rapidly. Maybe some charge controllers manage this automatically tho I'm not sure.
