There's been many similar coolers over the years, I had one from the 80's, but I highly doubt there's ever been one that only pulled 45watts, or even less on eco mode! to be able to run an actual freezer, on a 60w solar panel, is truly remarkable... Excellent video as usual...

@@electronicsNmore .. years back, I had one that had a compressor using r22... It worked well but drew a whole lot more current. It was an analog version of this and ran on ac or dc 12/24v.. The current draw and ability to freeze below zero, are the most impressive attributes of this amazing machine...

How does the compressor perform when not on a consistently level surface- think road trip in hilly country?
@electronicsNmore4 жыл бұрын
Hi Rick. Like every other hermetically sealed compressor, you wouldn't want to be driving on bumpy unpaved roads with potholes, but normal roads with hills shouldn't be a problem if the unit is sitting flat. If you can drive an RV where you plan on going, then it should be fine. Thanks for watching!

Thanks!

I can't spend too much time on one video. The insulated carrier will definitely slow down the warming of the cooler, and save power. My videos are becoming more and more of a waste of my time because YT's algorithm suppresses my channel, and pushes inferior videos higher up in the search results, and that's pretty screwed up. Thanks for watching!

How much power it draws is really not important compared to how much power it draws over time. If the ambient temp is 86 degrees, how much power per hour does it take to maintain 3 pounds of frozen steak for 24 hours? That is what matters.
@electronicsNmore4 жыл бұрын
Power is a huge factor, as well as how well it's insulated. 86 deg F is 12 Deg F warmer than my test area, I would imagine it would remain off only 7.5 - 8 minutes instead of 10.
@tarstarkusz4 жыл бұрын
@@electronicsNmore Peak power use is useful in that you can use a physically smaller power supply or battery in order to supply the peak current. But refrigerators are not one time things. They run periodically for as long as they are plugged in. I do wonder why they made this black along with the outer insulation jacket they supplied. Black is a better heat radiator, but it also is the most efficient way to absorb solar radiation. I was expecting the price to be higher. There are coolers that cost more. It's not a bad deal I think. Nice find and good review.
@atomikrobot3000994 жыл бұрын
For this reason exactly this is why I DIY made a solar powered fridge out of a mini chest freezer (by using a temperature controlled relay). The insulation is so good that it only needs to be on a few times per day for a short period. It would be interesting to do a comparison of a DIY option vs this commercial product. Great to see there are commercial options now. One question I have with this unit is if it resumes operation after having its power cut.
@tarstarkusz4 жыл бұрын
@@atomikrobot300099 That's a good point. I wonder if they would have been better off with mechanical controls. But I also wonder if that would make it cycle more. It might be worth it for them to add a small battery so that if you kept it in a car or some other use case where power is occasionally lost, it would automatically resume. Either a battery or non-volatile RAM and a flag for auto-resume.
@atomikrobot3000994 жыл бұрын
@@tarstarkusz yes, you're totally right on all those points. I really weighed getting a mechanical fridge controller for my solar powered fridge due to the simplicity vs a digital controller. That NVRAM / small battery is a great idea.

@electronicsNmore4 жыл бұрын
Glad you liked the video. He shows a different unit, and not all covers are made the same, but it's impossible for the refrigerator/freezer to not hold the cold longer by insulating it better. The only thing I could think of, would be the mesh over the air openings for the compressor area hindering airflow. If that's the case, just take a razor and neatly remove the screening over the vents. :-) Thanks for watching!
@Bennyboy-dog4 жыл бұрын
@@electronicsNmore Yeah, I was of the same opinion, but not any more - the vid clearly shows a market loss of efficiency with the cover. My guess is its the hot air getting under the cover and really, the only way to stop that is to seal around the openings, which makes it a bit useless as a cover. Maybe velcro or if it is steel, use magnets?
