@@AllisonandJamesSailing I've been telling people for years .. I'm a RC model's fan and also Environmental scientist.. so have seen plenty of bird mist netting. Btw.. always loved flyingboats and amphibious planes so if you want to protect your electronics cameras etc .. get something like corrosion x spray.. we use it on our RC gear and motors for model planes and boats and off road buggies. 😎🇬🇧🧙🏻‍♂️ They will even work under water in fresh/brackish water...but will stop corrosion . Just wash salty dunked stuff off in fresh water then dry. Besides foamy fpv flying wing designs float and glide.

I have a comment about mounting those Victron charge controllers. They have a blue LED that flashes at night when the batteries are not charging. It is very bright and quite annoying. The LED is bright enough that even reflected light from it was very noticeable. Because of that issue I had to relocate my charge controllers to a location where they could not be seen from the main cabin>strongly suggest you have some sort of light block around the solar controllers. I can't comment about the DC:DC converter because mine is mounted in a cabinet.
@AllisonandJamesSailing
@AllisonandJamesSailing 3 ай бұрын
Yess we’ve noticed that! Luckily they’re mounted all the way at the back of the boat, in the aft cabin. Basically our garage 😅 we have totes and other gear back there that seems to do a good job at blocking the blue flash and we sleep up in the vberth where it’s nice and dark
@randyjackola
@randyjackola 10 күн бұрын
Why 3 controllers? I'm still learning!
@AllisonandJamesSailing
@AllisonandJamesSailing 10 күн бұрын
Hey Randy, we used separate controllers for each solar panel to prevent the system from loss of power output due to shading from the rig. Regardless of the direction of the sun, the mast and stays are always casting shadows onto some part of the solar panels which caused a significant reduction in power output from that panel. If all the panels are run through the same controller then the whole system suffers around a 50% power loss. When you run each panel through its own charge controller, if a panel is shadowed then only that panels power output is reduced and the remaining panels can continue to produce at maximum yield. It’s not typically an issue on land based solar arrays as the panels are in a static orientation to the sun. Hope that helps to clarify!!

Those ice makers are pretty nice and would be handy, but just so I can have my bourbon on ice! We have two separate ice boxes that we made, they’re both more insulated than yeti coolers, they keep ice for well over a week. I’m planning on adding a compressor on board next year and having one ice box as a dedicated deep freeze.

G'day guy A 900 watt solar system ? Wow! that will be able to keep the batteries going . I am installing a 600 watt system with 2 135 amph lithium batteries and will be able to keep my system going and a 400 watt wind turbine. I am also installing an electric gully. P.S I tell people to spend the money and do not go near those cheap plastic panels and the decent panels are affordable especially in the long run. Gerard.

G’day Gerard!! We have a 300watt system, 3x100watt panels. But that is proving to be more than enough! Those plastic panels really don’t last very well before they go opaque! An electric galley sounds like a super interesting project! Hope it goes well and keep us posted!

@@AllisonandJamesSailing Yes. That's right having two batteries on an switch means i can have one on charge, the other in use switching of battery no 1 and run number 2 next day The battery number 2 goes off and i will use battery 1. That's for the cabin and instruments The gully will have its own power station bank that will supply 240 volts main at 1400 watts and as the induction cooktop and oven combo will run at 1200 watts, powering will not be a problem Gerard..

On a more serious note, you must check your Alternator - regulator to make it suitable for the Li Batt charging, many boaters using Li Batt use a special regulators that limit the amp output to prevent overheating the Alternator and or damaging the Alt. belt. Please check into this, cheers from Sechelt, BC
@AllisonandJamesSailing
@AllisonandJamesSailing 4 ай бұрын
Yes! We have a regular internally regulated alternator ~ 35amps (tiny little thing)! Currently I have it still connected to the lead acid starter battery to keep that bank topped up (we can’t change it’s charging profile) I’ve put a dc-dc charger between the lead acid and the lithium to move current between the two banks but that’s more of a ‘back up’ system in case we run our 400amps of lithium down! I do have a balmar regulator and a 70amp externally regulated alternator for our engine but just didn’t have enough time to install it (we have it with us though). So far I’ve been very impressed with the solar, even on a grey day the put out a couple of amps!

@@AllisonandJamesSailing Thats great but I do not have experience with the DC-DC converter , I know it can supply the power for a fixed load example to supply all your Instrument load but I do not know what it will do with supplying a Battery charging load.... do a limited shake down trip to see how everything works and go from there, cheers from Sechelt.
@AllisonandJamesSailing
@AllisonandJamesSailing 3 ай бұрын
It’s also our first time with one and I defiantly agree that it might not hold a battery charging voltage for long, but we’re very curious to see what it can do! The eventual plan is to have a larger alternators eventually charging off the main power plant.
