Put cement board under and behind the stove. Then add spacer against the wall and add another layer. Nothing flammable within two feet of stove. That stove you have is going to make your life so, so much better. And save you a fortune 👍👍👍. You can easily dry clothes in that room on a rack with stove on.
@peopledustcanada19 күн бұрын
Time and manpower is of the essence in your case... harvesting and milling and drying for own logs and lumber for a house would take with one person 3 or 4 years...not to mention prepping the foundation, and so on...thats a lot of winters to live in the trailer...imagine people have done it, anything with enough grit and determination...wood stoves are key for the northern winters:-)

Happy belated birthday Nicholas 🎂A ring around the moon is called refraction. This is when moonlight passes through ice crystals in clouds and causes the light to bend or refract, making it look like a ring around the moon. It's like an optical illusion 🙂

The comforts of having electricity? Haha. You're working for it buddy! Our Canadian winters are ruthless. Ignore the critics. I admire your guys' determination! A thought for under trailer supplemental heat: a side vent kit can be put on dryer. Exhaust through floor and then exit outside after roughly 10 feet of solid vent pipe. Keep elbows minimal, 2 45°'s are more efficient than a 90°.

Put the water pipe inside a bigger pipe and leave a vent open at the supply end of it and it will never freeze! We had one supplying the farm house that we had many years ago, the pipe was only down 18 to 20 inches over a distance of 150 feet from the well head to the basement and it never once froze in the 25 years we were there! As for your frosting windows, there is a plastic you can buy that goes on with 2 sided tape and is shrunk to tighten it up with a hair dryer. I have used it in a 35 foot travel trailer in the winter before and it works well for keeping frost off the windows, plus makes it easier to heat. Those trailers only have single pane glass

those campers wont last very long with the slideouts out, and all the snow load and ice on them... I would highly recommend building a carport like structure to encolse them.. the roofs are not very sturdy, and you are losing a LOT of heat.. another option to look at would be one of those large garage tents, or a metal arch building (like what they use for military hangars) and put the RV, and your vital tools in them.

I do not understand why you don’t want to do laundry when you go into town to get groceries. Why put up,with issues of freezing temperatures to do laundry when you can save a few weeks worth and do it at a laundromat. Summer is fine , but winter has its challenges and uses lots of electricity. I am sure the pioneers did not wash clothes often in the winter.

Good job! Everything is coming along! You do have a point about quiting electricity cold turkey, that's what we did. Sold our house, got rid of EVERYTHING that used electricity and moved to an atv/snowmobile access cabin with nothing at all, now that was an adapt and learn senerio. One adapts if they are forced too but it's rough for a while that is for sure! And likely not something most should do. You are way ahead of most, most start with nothing and work their way into fancy washers and running water.

You are ahead of most who go off grid , the camper may not be perfect but atleast it’s a place to live , some start out with just a tent , so a camper sure beats a tent , and the wood stove will definitely help , and electricity is easy to get use to , but all a guy can do it try limit your use , best you can , look for a old wood cook stove for when you get a cabin , that way you can cook meals and warm the cabin at same time , in winter and summer make a outdoor cooking area with a fire pit to cook the meals ,

Don't know if its been mentioned, but you want to use 3/4 in pex for your plumbing. 1/2 in pex necks down at joints and elbows to 3/8 really restricting water flow. On a low pressure RV pump flow will be very slow. Not saying it won't work but will be really noticeable on something you use daily

A couple of locals are built underground with one large side exposed, when a fire comes through no need to worry about the house, plus one of them doesn't use the wood stove till -20C as most underground homes stay at 68f year-round I am 8 years away from building my own. As for solar this is the week to map out the light path from 9am to 3pm, beyond those times you get nothing in winter my 11.6kw only got 8kw today average overcast crud. If you can get a tandem axle 5t truck to the new site highly recommend a large LPG tank to fill once a year or april and sept so 2000 gal based off the usage you stated. Soon guests can stay in the current trailer, that will be a happy day. You might want to consider a 40x40 concrete pad with in-floor heating using a boiler, fill with wood every few days a bit of extra heated area for a utility room and small garage in one corner, best part if that heat stops working it will stay warm for a day or 2, build in the footprint maybe a flat roof if you plan to expand to a 2nd floor open concept to let the heat up. If you get time, you should try 1 array vertical see if it works for you like it does for me then convert to vertical, never clean the panels except for 4ft snow drifts was the only time.

There's a minimum clearance distance between the wood stove and walls, it depends on how much heat output from your stove. We also have a hearth mat on our wall behind the stove.
@OffGridWithGinaThi18 күн бұрын
Yes I've been doing some homework on all that needs to be done. Last thing I want is a fire.... my woodstove says it requires a minimum of 15ft of chimney vertical... does that sound right? That would be like 11ft above my rv roof. Im afraid it will be hard to brace it. What are your thoughts?
@loubas878518 күн бұрын
I'm definitely not trying to tell you what to do, buuuut, snow is an insulator, I comprehend that you may be worried about to much weight on the roof, and if it was like 25 inches thick, then yes I would clean some of, buuuut, it looked like it was only about a foot of snow on it, so I would leave it up there as an insolation helper. love that you guys are following your dreams, and your husband is a king.

I reameber when my wife and I went of grid was over 40 years ago. We cleared a road in to our property about a quater of a mile long, I cleared the building sight and put up the logs to build our log house the first summer. The next summer I built the log house 900 sq ft we moved in that fall raised 3 children and still live there . We run gas fridge and stove in the summer and wood cook stove in the winter, oh ya we also run gas lighting. Our well is at the bottom of the hill leading up to the house in summer we pump the water up to the house and in winter we run down the hill with buckets and walk back up the hill with them full. We have and old ringer washing machine and a little 1500 watt gen that runs it. We also built a sauna at the same time we built the house that we use as our bath house wood fired of course. Our children are on there own now and well we still live the same way. One thing I will say you do everything a little slower as you get older. We would not have it any other way.
