Let’s talk about TWO kinds of speed that goalies NEED to PERFORM - 1) Starting/Impulse Speed, and 2) Moving/Dynamic Speed and we will get into HOW TO TRAIN THEM during your off-season, so that you can STAND OUT on the ice next season..
Here is a breakdown of the exercises we will cover:
1) Knee Down Vertical Jump
2) Knee Down Lateral Skate Bound
3) Quick Step and Stick
4) Lateral Hop and Stick
5) Quick Step Lateral Hop
6) SL Line Hop
7) Front to Back Line Hop
Leave a comment if you’d like me to do a part two video.

Just so you know, now that I'm 66 years old and been playing goalie since I was i my teens, I find that my mind can still keep up with the pay, my body is not willing to comply. I do look for videos like this to help with my stamina which is also not what it was like 40 years ago. I strive to work on these type of motion drills because when I started, it was only the stand up style of tending. There were no programs for coaching and I used to watch Hockey Night in Canada when we could get it in norther New York. The current style of play and equipment designed for that play ha changed so much in just the past 10 years. I am trying to move towards the newer style, and I think these drills will help get my body to start to comply with what I need to be doing.

Yes, a lot has changed and it does get tougher as we age - all the more reason to take a diligent approach to prepare your body for the demands of playing. Keep at it!

Great vid, can't wait for Level 2. I think I am good at speed but I know I have problems with stopping and getting back! Have no idea what muscles and drills I could use for that. I push off quickly but then the play moves back the other way, by the time I stop and get ready to load up to move back, I am watching the puck go into the net knowing that there is no way I can get back in time.

Yes, that is the problem with focussing too much on speed and not enough on agility, that's where the deceleration, change of direction comes in. In my programs I always start by teaching deceleration before acceleration because it is so important for goalies.

I don't sell any merch - I use it to treat/reward goalies in my programs or goalies who attend my annual training camp.

Is this something that would appropriate for a young (12u) goalie that wants to be quicker in the crease? Or only appropriate for older?
@goalietraining
@goalietraining 9 ай бұрын
No, this is designed for goalies at least 14 years of age.

@@goalietraining great thank you. I’ll be using these for sure for me. Any recommendations for the off season for a 10yr old wanting to be quicker on their feet? Stronger T-Pushes, faster up/downs?

@@TonySeaward I have a few videos on this channel specifically for young goalies (search my channel for "youth" or "young" and you'll find them. I do have a program for 10-13 year old goalies called the NextGEN Academy if that's more what you are looking for - goalietraining.pages.ontraport.net/NextGenGoalie

I was a goalkeeper in a sports school and at an adult level. I always lacked speed in my legs when playing. I also have an average starting speed. I think it's a genetic predisposition. Do you think that children's coaches should determine the speed of children in order to determine the correct position in the team? A goalkeeper with slow feet and a slow nervous system is unlikely to achieve great results and a stable game at an adult level.

Personally, I think it is most important for kids to play sport and play the position they enjoy the most. The majority of kids won't move on to the elite level, so I don't think that should be the goal of youth level coaches. At that age help them love the sport, love the challenges, learn resilience. Often the natural talent finds its way out.
