What do you think are the most important skills for a dog to posses - especially in new places? I had to rely on Inertia’s real-life leave it and come when called when we encountered some potentially dangerous surprises while we were on an off-leash walk. What would your dog have done in this situation?

I will say, I love functional obedience- "back up" was never one of mine 😂 but I just saw it come in handy for you perfectly when leashing up Inertia 🤣 goes to show everyone's criteria and utilization of their commands are different. I would say come when called is essential for ALL. As well as sending away from you (place/bed stay etc.). Any cues that require impulse control. Whether that is leave it, threshold work, or stay etc. All useful.
@nedamm5677

While training over 20 years, I used wait, wait there until dog gets another request/command. Many training vids now use stay for everything. While off leash, say a car approaches and the dog is in a safe place - "wait" seems good. A video on more voice or hand signal commands/understanding vs fewer words (using stay for everything). Thoughts ???

When out and about I use "wait", too, instead of stay. I don't know why. I guess it seemed more logical? I say "stay" when I leave the house and she's not coming. She knows exactly what that means and doesn't get excited when I go for my keys or put my shoes on. If I've said "stay" she doesn't even bother getting up from her chair. I use "wait" when we're outside and waiting to cross the road or allowing a car to pass us etc.

I use “wait” and “go ahead” for things like dinner, greeting people, crossing roads, etc. and “stay” for times when my doggo cannot follow, or has to wait until I call him, or when it’s a safety issue. For example, using “wait” and then “stay” if the situation becomes dangerous, like a car coming or someone biking on the trail we walk on

I train my dog in the ‘Wild’ everyday using your techniques. We have snakes, kids, goannas, lizards, kangaroos, bikes, cars and of course other dogs. I ‘m happy to say the behaviour of my three year old Kelpie has much improved because of it. Although stay, leave it and come are the most important, you won’t get there without consistency, repetition, reward and gentle enforcement when required. I was taught to never ask your dog anything you are not prepared to re-enforce. Sometimes ‘Look at Me’ is more important; that or whatever you can do to get Fido’s attention. People stop to watch me train him and often ask for tips. I direct them to you. Thank you💕

Inertia's "pancake" moment really defines the meaning of her name lol. What a great place for dogs to explore and roam, while at the same time you are maintaining control of how they do it. I'm sure my dog would have done a vertical leap as well encountering a snake skin. Those sniffers on the end of their snout definitely serve a purpose.

I've been working on my dogs recall and off leash heel she is a 8 month old German Shepherd mix I rescued her at 2 weeks old and I'm currently training her to be my service dog I posted about my progress and people started storming me telling me that a service dog has to be on a leash at all times that I cannot be taking my dog everywhere in public off leash that there are leash laws I live on a large property that has a lot of Wildlife and a lot of woodsy areas I cannot afford for my dog to see something and take off after it and not return when I call her and there are hiking trails nearby that do not require you to keep your dog on a leash but there are people that I come in contact with and I want her to heel I tell her

My grandparents have 2 little dogs. I only can do off leash trainingbwith one dog( the leash is on the dog but I drop it on the ground) I can trust this little dog that I'm training because i have worked with him more. The other little dog, he's been with them for a year now. He's a runner, he will take off and I have no Idea what to do. He's scared of everything so I can't train him a lot of things. He's scared of me touching his paws. If there's any tips please I would love to hear it

Oof! I “lost” my dog for a bit yesterday. We were off leash on a road through a wooded area near home when a deer sprang past. Normally, after that initial blast of adrenaline and a short chase for a few yards (to chase away, not to catch), he races back to me. This time, the deer was too close, so the adrenaline was too high. I searched the woods for a while before realizing he’d run back home. 🤦🏻‍♀️Remind me again to keep up with training.

I guess I really don't see the charm and allure of off-leash in new and "unsafe" places. By unsafe, I mean no fence where a dog can tangle with a car or a wild animal. I have never had a Border Collie, never had a breed who was bred to do man's bidding. Danes and Wolfhounds were bred to think for themselves, rather than go around "What can I do for you now, human????". So they were never off leash--guess I'm not a good enough "trainer" (not a professional) to take them off leash. Plus, many of the dogs I've had in the past (and one I have now) have had anxiety issues. Man, oh man, I would NEVER take a dog with anxiety issues off leash in an uncontained area. One thing could scare them and off they'd go--anxious dogs don't "think" when they are scared (and they often don't obey cues, either), they react and their reaction is the famous "fight or flight". Most dogs, if given a choice, will leave the situation--run away. I don't care how good your recall is, a frightened dog reacting isn't going to pay one iota of attention to your recall cue. They're getting the heck out of Dodge. With Wolfhounds, you have to watch the prey drive. They see a furry little critter, they were bred to go after it. It's their "job", what they think they were meant to do and do it they will. If they're off leash, those with the stronger prey drive are gone in a flash. But maybe I just fail as a trainer.

My dog is very flighty. As you said, if he got triggered nothing I did or said could get him to calm down and listen. Ecollar fixed that. He will come everytime no matter what. And no, I don't shock him, I use the beep.
@janhankins911
@janhankins911 7 ай бұрын
@@pumpkinhead8593 I think the beep would scare a lot of anxious dogs--I know it would my anxious girl now (she hates noises). So that isn't an option. If you used a beep, why did you use the collar instead of an external beep? Can the dog feel anything when the collar beeps?
@pumpkinhead8593
@pumpkinhead8593 7 ай бұрын
@@janhankins911 Using an external beep would defeat the purpose of the collar. Contrary to popular believe, the ecollar's purpose is not to punish, but to break the thought process the dog is trapped in that keeps him from focusing on you, wether that's fear, "SQUIRREL!!!" or whatever else. It acts as a tap on the shoulder so it has to be right by the dog. Plus, an external beep wouldn't do me much good if he's flown two blocks down the road already. I also like to take him to the beach where he might get a good bit away from me or it's so windy he can't hear me. As far as the beep scaring an anxious dog, that depends on how you train with the collar. I've taught my dog that the beep is his cue for a treat so it's a very positive sound for him and he comes to me quite happily at full speed when he hears it. So when he gets scared and runs in a panic, the beep will break that thought process and he will go "panicpanic... wait, what...? Hell YEAH I want a treat!!!" and comes right back. And no, the dog doesn't feel anything when it beeps, it's literally just the tone.
@janhankins911
@janhankins911 7 ай бұрын
@@pumpkinhead8593 When a dog is in a panic, he isn't "thinking". When a dog is in a panic, he won't take a treat. At least that's what research says and that has been my own experience (working with literally hundreds of rescue dogs). I'll withhold judgment on the beep function of the e-collar until I see some research on it. Do you know of any?
@pumpkinhead8593
@pumpkinhead8593 7 ай бұрын
@@janhankins911 Well I can't speak for others but it works with my dog. Honestly I don't see a reason to vilify the ecollar, especially concerning the beep function. I don't see how it is any different than any other audio cue like verbal commands, whistling or clickers. And you're correct, when a dog is in a panic it doesn't think. Which is why the ecollar works, as in it interrupts that mental/emotional state the dog is stuck in. No I don't have a particular piece of research on hand I could point you towards, but I'm sure there's plenty available online.
