Can't afford to. The trucks today are better performance and technology but not looks compare to these, however they're so expensive that people just buy them like they buy designer shoes, to wear and not use.

I can't tell you how many times I've been climbing a mountain in my 4x4 when a group of well dressed mountaineers, all wearing the same clothes, "came down from the mountain" and guided my way. Then, like Mexicans looking for work in a Home Depot parking lot, they all pile in back and I drive them to the top again. Yep...too many times to count..

They have very nicely paved road all the way to the top and it costs $10 per person to drive it... Not tough at all as long as you don't mind a highway with no guardrails in many places, a two foot dirt shoulder, and certain death only a few feet to your right in most places.
@TestECull
@TestECull Жыл бұрын
Modern plastic garbage won't even make it to the rock field without a MIL lit and won't make it 100 yards into the rock field before something gets ripped off the bodywork and something in the driveline goes sproing. Modern trucks are made to look tough but are optimized for the mall crawl they're actually gonna be doing. These old 57s? They were built tough because, back in 1957, people bought trucks to actually WORK them. They HAD to be tough. They weren't family cars or daily drivers back then, they were workhorses. You bought a sedan, coupe, convertible, or wagon for your everyday use and you bought a truck for heavy work. It ain't like today where you buy a truck for your everyday commute and pay someone else to do the heavy work. You stand a better chance of making that climb in a 57 Apache than a 23 Silverado. But I suppose the 23 has air conditioning and a radio so you're comfortable waiting for the off-road recovery vehicle to drag you back to civilization after you break something in the steering or explode the transfer case....or just simply piss the computer off bouncing over something and make it disconnect the pedal from the throttle like they're prone to do.

Nope... I live very close to Pikes Peak. My home faces the mountain from the top of another mountain about 10 miles away, and on clear days, I see Pikes Peak from my living room. The entire mountain is managed by the US Forest Service. You have to pay $10 per person just to drive up the paved highway to the top now, and have to be off the mountain by 5pm, or earlier depending on the time of year. It's especially beautiful when coated in snow. They keep the paved highway clear of snow most days of the year, but it's occasionally closed due to heavy snows and ice. It is a money maker for Colorado Springs, the USFS, and Manitou Springs. It gets really crowded at the top during the summer. Climbers climb it pretty much every day of the year, but they also have limits on hours when they can even be on the mountain, or get huge fines. Yes. They have a few man made water reservoirs up there, and a Visitor center and gift shop at the top, and a massive new one is being constructed right now... But no residences, malls, etc. There is one small lodge about 2 or 3 miles from the top... Hard to get into.

I think they build them way better now, I like the look of the old classics for sure but they do not compare performance wise even remotely to a modern truck. back then if you got 50,000 miles out of an engine before having to rebuild it you were doing good, plus constant maintenance was required, modern trucks drive 300,000 miles or more before they are used up and need a new engine .

@@dangreving1094 you are correct. I watched a 2009 Chevy vs a 1959. There was maybe 300 lbs difference in weight and the 59 was demolished. The 09, demolished, but the driver would fair much better than if he had been in the 59.

Ref. Pike's Peak road was started in 1888. It was dirt. It was hard packed and improved in 1915. packable rock imported I'm guessing. Natural granite chip rock doesn't pack well. Prior to 2011 the road was asphalt just the bottom half. top half was crushed stone but smooth and very wide and safe.. Full asphalt to top in 2011. FTR no pedal bikes were ever allowed but you can take your Mtn bike to the top in someone's vehicle and enjoy a 12 mile brutal ride down on Barr Trail the hiking trail. You will be on your brakes most of the ride down.
