That drive up Pikes Peak and then back down is a once in a lifetime experience. It's frightening as hell once you get above the treeline and my mom was in tears before we reached the top. I'll never forget it.

Thanks for posting. My dad drove our family up in 1959, when it was gravel. This looks like a much more enjoyable trip! You don't want to have to hug the edge of nothingness near the top, as we had to do, while a huge gravel-grading machine passes in the other direction and takes up most of the road. Pavement is so awesome. Looks like you had a beautiful day up there. Thanks for posting.

My dad and his friends drove up in the summer of 1942 when he was training at Lowry field in Denver. I was at Peterson AFB from 1990 to 1993 and it was still gravel at that time. Absolutely breathtaking views Colorado Sorings and Kansas to the east and snow caps as far as you can see to the west.

I was just there last week. Did the drive with my 80 year old mom. Once we got towards the top I had a massive anxiety attack 😂. Somehow I kept going. I found the drive down to be easier because you can actually see the horizon and ground. Drive up towards the top all you see is sky

I love how the trees get more and more sparse as the altitude increases ... really enhances the effect of the true nature of the climb! I've done both the road and the cog railway.

The first time I went, I was alone and drove up and down. A decade or so later, I had with me a friend who had never been there. We each wanted to ride the cog railroad, but he also wanted the experience of driving up the mountain. So, we went to the bottom rail station, where we bought one round-trip ticket, and I headed up by train. He drove my truck up the mountain. At the top, I gave him the second half of the train ticket. He rode the train down, while I drove my truck down and picked him up at the rail station. We did it all for half the money in fare and toll and in half the time. Sheer geniuses!

The City of Colorado Springs was forced to pave it after the Sierra Club sued them in the 1990's, claiming the gravel was washing off and polluting the forest below with gravel. The paving was completed in 2011.

My Dad,Mom,and I live in Chicago from 1960 thru 69. We vacationed in Colorado quite a bit. That first year,my Aunt Marion,my Swedish grandmother, and cousin came with us. We decided, well,I guess Dad decided to try the Pikes Peak drive. Back then it was a gravel road and very little guardrails. Well it was OK up until we passed where the trees grew out along the road. Once Mom, Aunt Marion, and Gail saw how high we were and about three curves after that.....that's all she wrote, they wanted to go back. Dad drove the girls back and we went all the way up to the summit. I remember having to piss,so Dad stopped and I found a beautiful green quartz near a pine tree, had it for years but it was lost in the move. Funny thing about our vacations together though, every place we went on vacation,Marion,Gail, and Nanny always got a room where the TV was broken, the shower trickled out water, the fan was broken, the room stunk, there was always something wrong wherever they stayed.

My wife and I drove up in mid-October 2022 as part of our honeymoon. Amazing experience. The visitor center is very nice now that it's completed. You can certainly feel the lower oxygen being up 14,115 feet. I don't think I've ever driven a vehicle in 1st and 2nd gear so much in my life as I did driving back down. Used the brakes about three time. Highest I got was 3rd gear. I was more unnerved by the number of times I let people pass than I was the road itself. Halfway down they check the temperature of your brakes to make sure they're not over heating. I would definitely do it again. Glenwood Canyon on I-70 was spectacular too.

WOW! Talk about a "dizzy" ride with a dash-cam recorder! Great scenery, even the pull-offs and parking areas on the way to the top of Pike's Peak in CO. I was surprised that much of the roadway did not have guide-rails on the side of the road and the drop off would have killed anyone for certain! The views going up were great! What amazes me is the bicyclists making it all the way to the top, its hard to breathe because your oxygen level is decreased being at high altitude ,I salute them ! All the hairpin turns with no guardrails can be a bit terrifying, just dont look down while driving , keep eyes on the road at all times ! A bicyclist was disoriented near the top he was zigzagging and then finally got his bearings, was scary to watch , yikes ! Beautiful breathtaking view at the top, glad we did it !

We drove up this road in 1965 and there was this crazy man behind us who kept tailgating our car and we were half way up the mountain. I turned around in the back seat and looked at the guy and he looked weird. I told my dad that the guy was right on our tail. Daddy slowed down and the man passed us only to get in front of us and go real slow. We passed this nut several times back and forth and all four of us were alarmed and terrified because there are no side railings up this very, very dangerous road. To this day I don't know why that man was bugging us like this. It was the most terrifying ride I've ever taken and the altitude made us all a little queasy too. When we got up to the top we couldn't see anything because of the clouds. There were oxygen ports everywhere because of the altitude. I was very glad when we came down off of that mountain.

I remember making some pretty treacherous drives in Arizona. One of them was an old road that snaked back and forth up the mountain. It was in terrible shape and in many places an entire lane had crumbled away. Like many people, Im not fond of heights, but for some reason mountains dont bother me the way buildings or bridges do.

This happened several times on the dangerous curves with no railings almost to the peak. We were all very alarmed and frightened by this man. It is really beautiful and the views are breathtaking😍, but I have to admit that I'm not very brave😣, when we went, my son was driving our SUV and he is very careful but after you pass half of the way and before getting to the summit the road gets so narrow and there's no protection on the sides that I got so scared that I could feel the panic in my stomach, I thought I was going to have a heart attack😰, I don't wish no one to feel how I felt!😥 But now that I look back I can tell it is worth the ride because it's really beautiful!💖

Yes I was a passenger and looking down out the window you have about one foot of room to the edge of road one mistake and you all go down my nephew was driving up you could see in his face he was scared shitless. I was thinking of shit I may have to drive but he pushed through and was happy he did it all by himself so was I . If you make the trip please no fooling around no room for error and driver for sure can't be distracted . Don't want to scare anyone for doing it just be safe and focused o what your doing.

Took this trip in 1974 in a 1970 Mustang Mach 1. Had to check in at santas workshop. They would check your vehicle and adjust the carburetor. Many cars off the cliffs and turned over. Wonder if they are still there? I had no problem with breathing there but put me in Colorado Springs and I faint every time. Took the trip again in the early 80's in a 1973 Mustang Mach 1.

I am totally terrified of heights. There would be noway for me to drive up to the top - with no guardrails, the curves... even as a passenger, I would not make it. It is beautiful though. Video kinda made me a little dizzy as fast as it was going but still it was good.

Ran the Pikes Peak Marathon . . . from Manitou Springs city center . . . left up Ruxton Avenue . . . past the Pikes Peak Cog Railway, to my left . . . and on (and up) the Barr Trail. I was already acclimated, due ro my residence in Denver . . . however, it became a true test of endurance when passing trendline ! Pikes Peak to - 14,110 feet elevaton. Marathon distance - 14.1 miles, finishing time - 3 hours 12+ minutes . . . perfect weather, firat Saturday in August. Round trip of the same race was the next day.. A true test . . . of will ! ! ! ! !

Made the ride as a passenger a few weeks ago. Terrified for a substahtial stretch...miles of skinny shoulders with no guardrails and thousand-foot drops. Fortunately, my son is a smart mountain driver. The views are breathtaking, and am so glad to have seen them...but next time I'll take the train and acrually open my eyes

The absence of guardrails is so the snow plows can push the snow off the road when they're clearing it. It takes a special kind of person to drive a snowplow in the mountains!

We were there last month and listened to a man trying to get help for his car that had an overheated engine. He walked up (down actually) as we were buying our passes. This caused a slight delay in paying our toll. Just as we were leaving the toll booth we heard a call come over one of the worker's radios that there was a medical emergency further up (heart/chest problems). Around mile 10 we were passed by an ambulance. We decided to park and take the shuttle at Mile 13. Best decision of the trip.
