I think it's white American thing. I'm Mexican and always do "accents" from different countries with my friends. We bean it up with our white friends, British English accents as well. I always do it when I watch tokyo drift, especially when he first goes to school. Some people actually learn the language that way. Growing up, white girls would always do mexican accents to be mean or something. I would just laugh then do a valley girl voice. I tried with a Samoan girl in 5th grade, but she wanted to kick my ass 😢. She was 5' 8 in the 5th grade 🫤

I worked with a guy named Paul which is his American name. He's Vietnamese. Always smiles and the best he could jokes. Worked 2 jobs and sent money back home to his family every week. Wholesome dude. I think it very much depends on the perspective, as well as the quality and intent. non asians, generally do an asian accent, that is horrible 9/10 times, to mock the culture and rip on it, basically doing the same shit, they did during and after WWII, they treat others, other cultures, like lesser beings and use the excuse of comedy, to justify their shitty behaviour, they always have. It's just that nowadays, comedians, are not making people question things anymore, not like they used to. Nowadays, the new up and coming comedians, are all people, who can only be "funny" with their exact target audience, that just wants to talk shit about everybody who has it worse than them and most people don't even realize that.. These people, literally talk shit about every other culture, but their own, then go on and use the excuse of comedy or others being to sensitive, no regard for consequences or being able to look at things from the other peoples perspective.. Nothing wrong with trying to imitate an accent, but I would say an imitation or attempt at it, is way different from mocking a language and culture and it is very very different, when you're not even part of that culture in the first place, you know, like we're not saying the N word, cause it has zero association with us?
