I can relate in so many levels. My parents did not have a good marriage at all. Half of the time they're fighting and the rest of the time pretending that the other doesn't exist. Then my mother emotionally burdening you with "I only stay in this marriage because of you." Can you imagine what that does to a child? Thinking it's your fault that your parents are fighting? There's no divorce in my country so that wasn't an option for them. Separating also means shame to the family back in the day so that wasn't a choice for them either. Unfortunately, my dad died 10 years ago and my mother, instead of calming down and putting all her resentments to rest, developed a more narcissistic personality. Now me and her are the ones constantly arguing. Good thing she backs down when she sees that I won't budge. Yeah... we have a complicated relationship. I love my mom, but I don't like her very much. Lol.

My parents only stayed together long enough for me to receive a kidney transplant when I was 6. My father was the donor. My mother loves to remind me constantly that that was the "only" good thing he did for me. I always had the hope they would get back together but end the end I saw it was for the best.

I'm a big advocate for telling people to not be together if their relationship is toxic. If they argue over stupid stuff, then it's not my place to say anything. I know people who pops up kids and can't take care of these kids. I know this kid and when she got older, she told her dad to divorce her mom. As kids, we see so much shit our parents do. Arguing everyday and mental abuse is something I never wish for my parents. It's better to separate then risking the chance of one of them going to jail.

It's a good thing I've never experienced any fights between my parents. They got a divorced when I was just a baby. My dad wanted to be on his own at the time and he was a drug addict too. My mom hated him for it. It's a good thing they got a divorced. It was the right thing to do from both end.

2 happy homes is better than one miserable one. I'm glad my parents divorced (which is a no-no in Mexican culture), but luckily, out of many other cultures, it's not so dishonorable. But I was made fun of and had the comments. Of course. But looking hindsight, they are doing much better as people now that they chosen who truly fits them in relationships (vs having to be married at 17 yrs old cuz they had me). Now my mother is a lead nurse supervisor at the hospital and a real estate and business investor. My father is also a nurse practitioner at a different hospital and owns several mechanic shops. They did better separately than together.

I have two different groups of friends who's parents are divorced. For both of them, the parents got divorced when they were in college/high school. With both of them, it's the same sentiment. While it was sad and it hurt to see their parents separate, they were glad the parents did because the household was so toxic that as kids they were afraid to go home after school. Honestly, both of them wished their parents had gotten divorced earlier to save them from the trauma.

My mom was driving while 5 of the kids including me was in the car with my dad. My mom n dad got into an argument so my mom drove onto incoming traffic saying my dad had to apologize or else she won’t turn back onto the ride side of the road. I remember us kids yelling and forcing my mom to move back to the right lane. And telling my dad to apologize. Luckily my dad apologized while cars were coming from oncoming traffic.

I never knew my parents argued thought out my youth. In 2018, I was 23 and my brother was 18 when our parents divorced. I was so mad, since I was the last person they told. They broke my heart and I don’t think I would ever forgive my dad. And I assumed my mom would never talk to him again. 2022 came around and all of a sudden my parents made up. They talk like friends but not lovers. I understand now why they divorced, they were both at fault for the failed marriage. But I’m glad my parents are still friends. Sometimes I think their divorce messed me up. I now think what if my husband does the same? It’s kinda scary. ;-;

I understand what Bart is trying to do but shielding your child from all fights is creating an unrealistic idea of what a loving relationship is. A child should see that there are fights but also how they are resolved and never become nasty or disrespectful

But I think that is the biggest issue because most couples don't just have disagreements or low key "fights" I knew my parents had times where they weren't happy with each other but the stress that doing in it front of them is not good. Dont lie and say everything is perfect, but most don't have the communication skills or emotional maturity to do so

I get the understanding that our parents didn't have resources like we do. But to what extent is it our responsibility to help out full grown adults to mature and realize new perspectives in life? Seems too big of a burden to raise your own parents.. especially closed-minded ones.

Unfortunately a lot of people do this because they’re acting on their own emotions at the time, they don’t even think about what it can do to a kid. My mother used to threaten to k*ll herself just to get me to convince my dad to apologize to her (often for issues that she was the problem of). It’s crazy to think parents do this stuff for their own selfish reasons.

And tbh, idk if like.. it was meant to be from his dad’s passing. Like his mom basically got to say goodbye ina way. in my opinion, I think marriage is too easily approved of by the partners/their families & that same ease translates to divorce. the build to marriage should include prenuptial agreements, now more so than ever. treat your spouse as imperative to your life as your career, finances, and the body of your family. these precautions will show the importance of being involved throughout your relationship, especially if you decide to call it quits. it’s okay to divorce if the situation calls for it, view it seriously as it has lasting effects for everyone

I don’t think we understand the parents who ran from the Vietnam war. They ran down the hills while villages down there were massacred. Running through a forest full of bombs being implanted through the side of the dirt roads which is all they had. Splitting away from friends n family n now after 20yrs they finally meet. It goes to show why they are so tough to know their parents were forced to stay behind with a risk of dying.
