I am in the middle of this repair as we speak. I ended up removing the drive shaft b/c it also needed repaired. That helped a bit getting to the starter; however that top 15mm bolt on the starter is now standing between me & a new starter, it won't budge. It would really help to see how you got that bolt out, or see what tool helped you finally remove that bolt. Thank you for the video.

Wendy A. Green Yes that top bolt was a pain. I used a tool that the head flexed. This is the amazon link below. You should be able to get these at your local oRiley’s or auto zone, Home Depot might even carry it. Good luck. That top bolt took a while. Normal starter should take 10 min. This one took me 45 min. Here is what I did. It varies to your year vehicle. Spacing can be different. I would have made a video but I was swearing to much doing this. For 2004. You can’t sneak it out without removing or detaching something. They changed the design for the 2007 from what I see to get the starter out without removing shaft or exhaust. This job can be a nightmare. For my 2004 Liberty. I removed the clamp to the exhaust / manifold which allowed me to slide the starter out when clamp was removed. I didn’t take my drive shaft off. Small air tool with a 10 mm deep well socket. It’s a pain to work on the ground but I did it. Take nut all the way off. The exhaust will come down plenty to get the starter out. To put the clamp back on. Thread the nut on a turn or two to hold the clamp together. Place the clamp in between joints position the clamp so you can get the air tool up there to drive it home. I used a floor jack to hold the pipe up in its position. Position the jack about in the middle of the vehicle to jack the pipe up just enough to hold tight while you clamp it back together. The big bolts off the back of the starter I Cracked them loose with a stubby socket wrench than used an air tool to take them completely out. You will need a swivel neck adapter and extensions for the angle while using the tool for the big starter bolts. Be prepared to get banged up a bit doing all this. Lol. My biggest problem that held me up was figuring out how to get the exhaust clamp back on. Well this is how you do it. After researching that clamp is not cheap so don’t hack it. Nightmare is over.

Yea its a total nightmare of a job. A starter should only take 15 min this one took me 1hr. No you don’t need to raise the car. You should be able to slide under to do it.

@@OFFAxisBuilds not a 2004. 2007. They figured it out. 2004 you are detaching parts to get it out. All jeep needed to do was to make a different bend in the exhaust so you could sneak the part out. What a joke

Yep completely agree. I think the engineers had a laugh when they placed all those parts in.

I thought i was having a starter issue on my 02 jeep liberty. Went to the junkyard and pulled one. When i got home to install it i decided to give my batter posts and power cable connections a really good cleaning. Havent had the issue since. I would just hear a click when i turned the key.

Yes that can happen. I’m glad you were able to fix it on the cheap side.

Thanks for your support good luck to you in the future. If you have any other issues, like your ignition keys stops working or your window regulator break, or your fuel pump. I have videos on that too.

Whoa, you should disconnect the negative battery cable first and reconnect it last. The directions that came with my new starter (from A Zone) specify this order too in the included instructions.

I'm going to be doing this today on my 07 liberty. Our starter actually smoked before it stopped working. Checked the breakers and fuses with no issues. How did you get the top 15mm bolt out? Would a closed-end 15mm ratcheting wrench be faster since you can't really turn the top bolt very much?

That top bolt was a pain to get out. I recommend getting a flexible ratchet wrench. Here is a amazon link. You can also get these at Lowe’s, home depot, o’Reillys or auto zone. www.amazon.com/dp/B01LH812GO/ref=cm_sw_r_sms_c_api_i_lnGUCb68H7YGM

@@LifeofCrane We gave up. Spent 3 hours on that damn thing and it started to strip. I went to ACE and got the wrench. I created new curse words today. I have never seen such a flaw in the engineering of a car. The rear main seal, front diff, and the valve covers were all leaking, so we're just gonna send it to the scrap yard. I've been fixing that damn thing nearly every two months. Brakes, wheel bearings, window regulators, plugs, coils. We're just done.
