2005 Limited w/ 3.7 and 4wd, I didn't need to remove drive shaft or the bracket on the side of the transmission. I just used a combination of sockets and extensions, swivel adapter, and wrenches. It's really to make space for your hands, taking all the other stuff out. Hardest part was breaking free the 15mm starter bolts.

Great video. It helped a lot. I have an 05 4wd v6. The exhaust riser on mine is bigger-around in the area immediately next to the starter. It doesn't leave enough room to get the starter out between the exhaust and drive shaft mount. It lacks about 1/2 inch of having enough clearance. It was a pain but I finally managed to get it out using a crow bar to leverage the exhaust and drive shaft mount around enough to force it between them. I'm putting the new one back in tomorrow. Hope I can get it back in without having to remove the exhaust.

A1, Everyone....I watched your video and it was very helpful. One "HUGE" time saver I found doing a starter on a 2002 V-6 Liberty was removing the front diff coupler. Instead of messing with the motor mount, or exhaust you pop the coupler off, stuff a rag in the hole to keep the oil at bay, then drop the starter out. It makes removing all the heat shield and wires way easier than doing it in the tight spaces. Just my experience.

you do not have to take the driveshaft off on a 2007 jeep liberty with the 3.7L engine. the starter will come right out between the exhaust and the frame. no need to take the trany shift plate off either. and the heat starter shield can stay on till the starter is loose so you can get to that hard to get 10mm bolt. i just got done doing one. edwinstarr

If your exhaust has the CAT coming directly off the exhaust manifold be prepared to loosen and disconnect the exhaust pipe connections in order to swing the CAT out of the way for starter extraction clearance.

Nice video. Got to say my 2004 Cherokee (UK) CRD 2.8 Auto was a lot easier for any one attempting one. Whip the nearside wheel off, get a 10mm socket on the bottom two nuts, ring spanner for the top one. 13mm on the electric and pull off the spade connector, drops straight out with no issues. No heat shield on the 2004 model. I also cranked the engine over by hand to have a quick look at the flex plate for damage. New one slipped straight back in. Do like the these vids though. Very clear instruction and good explanations.

2002 Limited Edition, the cat is higher than in this video, runs vertical in the exhaust. Left the driveshaft in, pulled the cat. We unplugged the O2 sensors from their respective harnesses, ( the upstream sensor is a real treat). Once the bolt for the upper clamp is loose, you prolly need to pry it loose from the cat and exhaust manifold. Once the cat is out, it's super easy to change the starter.

Just figured I'd add some info, particularly if you're doing this at home: 1: Front drive shaft won't spin unless you have a (front) wheel off the ground. So Jack up the passenger side and pop it on stands. Could do the driver which gives you a little more height but less space as the stands are in the way. 2: Mark your driveshaft and it's receiver with whatever you have (white paint, marker, scratch it a bunch on both ends) so you can realign it on the way back in as they're balanced with weights like your wheels and yours may or may not be perfect. 3: heat shield removal optional 4: if doing solo it's kinda annoying to crack free and later torque the shaft bolts so get used to loosening 1 or 2, shifting it to 2wd, getting back on the ground , rotating it a bit, shifting back into 4, rince repeat. That is all.

On the 2002 Liberty, (2002 is a little different than later models) instead of removing anything with the exhaust, you can loosen the bolt on the left motor mount and lift the motor 1 inch. The motor mount bracket is slotted for this so you dont have to remove the bolt all the way. The front driveshaft still has to be removed from the transfer case & the front differential. It does not have to be removed from the Jeep though, you can just move it to the side to give clearance for removing the starter.

I had the say problem as heyjacks. I needed another 1/2 inch to get the starter out and eventually got so frustrated I threw in the towel. It cost me over $500 for part, labor, and tow at the local auto shop to get it running. Totally stinks. Very much appreciate the videos.

Can be done w/o removing drive shaft or unbolting shifter cable bracket. Don't forget to clean up the battery cable while you're in there and spray it down with fluid film.

Great video worked just like you said. I didn't have a heat shield probably should have got one guess someone took it off and never replaced it. The back shaft is a pain everything barely fits and tools are a pain back bolts on shaft are also about an eight shorter so they aren't interchangeable with front keep them separate. I could use cordless attachment on front saved lots of time took a couple of hours with jackstands and laying down I'm sure a garage with a lift would have helped a little all in all not bad just amazing how little car companies care about where they put parts especially things like starters that will always fail at some point.

I just did this on my 2006 Liberty AWD. Did not remove driveshaft. Did not remove transmission bracket. I used 15mm stubby wrench on both bolts which took most of the time, about 30min off and 30 on, not fun. Not clear from video how long that took 1A. Starter easily slides out. Removing driveshaft likely makes it easier to remove those bolts, but I prefer to not touch something if don't need to.

honestly this video would be helpfull if i had the same Liberty(2003). My downpipe coming off the manifold was twice the thickness leaving 2.5 inches between the downpipe and the shaft cradle(4x4). Had to turn the old starter 180 degrees to feed it through, pry bar to get completly out. New starter had to be pry bared in then steel mallet till its past that thick downpipe and 4x4 cradle. No where easy like in the video.

No, I have seen this done on a 4WD without removing any of that extra stuff, just remove the starter. Guy used one of those angle wreches and it's kinda tricky to slide the starter out but it saves a hell of a lot of work.

Here is what I did. It varies to your year vehicle. Spacing can be different. I would have made a video but I was swearing to much doing this. For 2004. You can’t sneak it out without removing or detaching something. This job can be a nightmare. For my 2004 Liberty. I removed the clamp to the exhaust / manifold which allowed me to slide the starter out when clamp was removed. I didn’t take my drive shaft off. Small air tool with a 10 mm deep well socket. It’s a pain to work on the ground but I did it. Take nut all the way off. The exhaust will come down plenty to get the starter out. To put the clamp back on. Thread the nut on a turn or two to hold the clamp together. Place the clamp in between joints position the clamp so you can get the air tool up there to drive it home. I used a floor jack to hold the pipe up in its position. Position the jack about in the middle of the vehicle to jack the pipe up just enough to hold tight while you clamp it back together. The big bolts off the back of the starter I Cracked them loose with a stubby socket wrench than used an air tool to take them completely out. You will need a swivel neck adapter and extensions for the angle while using the tool for the big starter bolts. Be prepared to get banged up a bit doing all this. Lol. My biggest problem that held me up was figuring out how to get the exhaust clamp back on. Well this is how you do it. After researching that clamp is not cheap so don’t hack it. Nightmare is over.
