Many thanks for these videos, I find then very useful and enjoyable. Been in the boat business for over 40 years and now retiired . Never attempted wood/grp/varnish as my discipline was always engineering and believed in 'do what you do, do well '. Now's the time for me to expand a bit.

The videos that come through this channel are unusually good. I’m always surprised how few views and comments there are. It’s a fantastic resource to have a hand. Thanks for this video too.

Thank you for the strength test and breaking the fillet, that's exactly what I have been trying to see. It looks plenty strong and I'm now more confident in the strength of the technique.

Instead of sanding the cured fillets, I wait until the epoxy has gelled well then dip a gloved finger in 70/30 IPA and smooth it down. This makes a glass smooth surface without the hassle of sanding. Feel free to tell me if this is a bad idea. Thanks for the cool video!

Isopropyl Alcohol. I tried it and loved it! Use thick gloves. I waited too long but the fillets were still soft. I used acetone and rubbed them smooth. It worked great. Thanks for the tip.

@@craighuenergardt2198 If you look at the MSDA for acetone, (non-medical I assume), it has oil in it, so clean well with something else if you are going to apply over it.

How do you achieve a filleting putty the same colour as your timber?

It is rarely perfectly possible, but you can start with wood flour. There are dyes you can use with epoxy, but they are usually best avoided for cost, mess, and possible weakening. You can experiment with different woods and their effect on tones. Often the wood flour is too dark, in which case, you can add some 410, which is useful as a thixatropic, but also is light in colour. I am a boat builder and really good boats are rarely wood finish. It is ludicrously time consuming to make and to maintain. But even if you go for that approach, as a builder I am proud of my joinery, so I don't make it stand out any more than necessary, but I am not ashamed of it (a different way to look at things).

Do you have a patch kit for screw holes that will work to patch the holes in the fiberglass hull? I have to cut the screw off, prob sand into the gelcoat, and patch with something. Thank you. Do you have anymore videos?
@nateface
@nateface 3 жыл бұрын
Hi Lee - we don't sell patch kits, but a little thickened epoxy should work great. There are hundreds of videos - including this 10-part series - at www.offcenterharbor.com/all-videos/ if you'd like to check them out.

I highly recommend this video series as well as others. Especially as a beginner. Using a roller for laying the glass was amazing. Best $45 I ever spent. Thanks!

@masterpiecetools131 3 жыл бұрын
@@craighuenergardt2198 For sure, but it doesn't work with all great epoxies. It is how fiberglass resin is laid, because it is so thin. But some of the boat epoxies will not sink in well, which is why there is the dry method. And they can be combined as well. Russ' dad, Jim, the original epoxy geek, told us that the unique thing about rollers is they take epoxy from places where there is too much and move it to places where there is too little. squeegees tend to screed it off the surface, and leave you with puddles that get wasted to a can, or, sometime, you can rolled them back into action with a roller.

So...you put fillets on top of cured fiberglass/epoxy and NOT the other way around?

A bit late of a reply, but for future web searchers: I watched the full video series. I seem to recall that the panels were fiberglassed prior to assembly. So, in this case, the fillets were going on top of glass. A video later in the series goes over adding fiberglass tape over the fillet.

I've never had any of the epoxy products, like gorilla or permatex, bond or hold up to anything. All surfaces prepared and cleaned, but still no success.
@nateface
@nateface 4 жыл бұрын
Russell (and most of the other boatbuilders I know) use WEST System Epoxy. I've used gorilla glue but not permatex, and all I can say is that real 2-part epoxies like WEST are in a different league. They'll bond and hold up to just about anything.
