Hey Andy, nice Video. I love how you oversize everything! Your videos just give me my daily dose of Batteries :) I also built myself an Lifepo4 Battery (6kwh) for my ebike to charge everyday. I use an old Apc USV (Unterbrechungsfreie Stromversorgung) as inverter. That works surprisingly well. You can have a pure sine wave 1000 watt unit for 50$ you replace the lead acid ones with your Battery Bank. You should mention in onw of your Videos. It would really help people, that are on a bugdet.

Thank you. I have several of these UPS sitting around. I removed all the dead batteries and wanted to replace them with AGMs again to sell them again. Mauby that's an interesting project to upgrade the UPS with LFP cells and use it as a small mobile battery solution, Bluetti on a Budget so to speak.

@@OffGridGarageAustralia That would be great andy! The only problem i had was the big Transformator getting absurdly hot. That was solved with installing an 120mm Fan. They aren’t designed to run big loads for long, although in my test there’s no problem with that. Edit: And i tried charging my tesla with 5 a (240v) which surprisingly works. These UPS‘s have some kind of Neutral-Ground-Bond.

Just FYI: There are two independent and INCOMPATIBLE measurement systems for cable glands: There is the PG system (PG9, PG11, PG16, PG19, etc). And there is also the METRIC system (M12, M16, M20, M25, etc). It's very annoying that they are not compatible. PG25 has thread outer diameter of 30 mm, but M25 has thread outer diameter of 25 mm. Some of the PG sizes have very strange thread diameters (e.g. PG16 has 22.5 mm thread diameter).
@OffGridGarageAustralia2 жыл бұрын
That is strange indeed. The PG25 fits a 25mm, the PG20 a 20mm hole. At least it is sold as PG gland down here.

Hi Andy. You could mount the AiLi 500A shunt, the one with rectangle display in line with Victron shunt. You’ll then see all important informations at glance without need to use an app. I’ve this setup in our motorhome, both Victron and AiLi together with 600Ah LiFePo4 DIY pack.

With all the data connections coming into the battery, I wonder if it would be cleaner to have a USB hub on the wall and then only one USB cable feeding from that hub into the battery. You'd probably need to feed 5v power for the hub out from the battery as well - but that's just two cables (one USB and one power [if needed]). Rather than an individual USB run for each device. Just a thought.
@evil172 жыл бұрын
I like ur idea Russ and I wonder how easily he can remove a faulty USB cable in the future if needed, I have heaps of dodgy ones, although they are not fixed and constantly plugged in and out of things compounding their shorter use by date. There are plenty of variations in USB Hubs nowadays that could suit well here, with 8-10 USB outlets or more for extra charging of phones, pads, etc, and a hub right at ur computer gear too could be handy. Good comment, & TA Andy for another entertaining vid, Cheers
@Labeeman2 жыл бұрын
Keep your data cables separate from your power whether they are AC or DC on the DC power cables you will have pulsating DC due to the inverters drawing from them. To confirm use an AC CT and measure the ac voltage while your inverter is powered up to a load.
@OffGridGarageAustralia2 жыл бұрын
Too late now ;)
@the78mole2 жыл бұрын
Hi Andy, seperating AC and Data has less to do with noise on the data but more with the data cable isolation.
@christelting1359 Жыл бұрын
I wish they designed inverters to play better together even across brands. All they really need to do is sync their waveforms just like with grid tie. Then you could run multiple inverters of different sizes and capacities. Have a controller that can switch them on and off. To boost amps or run your home solely from a more efficient small inverter when there is no real power demand.
@john_in_phoenix2 жыл бұрын
My only comment would be to use class T fuses instead of mega fuses. Nice work. We had no problems running communications and DC power together. Burn in racks holding 128 motherboards with serial ports and power together (in 1981, but still).
@OffGridGarageAustralia2 жыл бұрын
Thanks John. The mega fuses (with 58V capability) are recommended by Victron. And a bit cheaper than class T fuses but yeah, they would have worked as well in the same manner. I have a 250 circuit breaker before the fuses with a breaking capacity of 25kA so just in case of a case.
@john_in_phoenix2 жыл бұрын
@@OffGridGarageAustralia Yes, as you pointed out, I forgot you have some very capable circuit breakers. Much better than the Eaton Bussman brand that I use, although more expensive. No need to replace fuses even if you have a short.

Hopefully Australia won't catch on to California's brilliant plan to tax sunlight. As for signal cables with DC power cables in the same raceway and metallic conduit, we used to do that a lot in industrial power and control environments, not typically a problem if the insulation ratings of all conductors are above the maximum operating voltage of the highest operating voltage conductor. I've even seen up to 5KV AC power cables and 4-20ma control cabling specified and installed in the same cable tray, as long the control cables were internally shielded and separated by 6 inches. Alternatively, simply placing a metallic separator (grounded and bonded) as little as a thin aluminum shield plate between power conductors and low voltage signal cables was legal and effective.
@OffGridGarageAustralia2 жыл бұрын
That's interesting, thanks for sharing.

I ordered 16 3.2 V cells from AliExpress on 12/05/21. I received tracking information saying they were in Long Beach almost 2 months ago. The notification said the post office was waiting for the item. I have communicated with the seller and all they can tell me is that their records show the batteries have been delivered to America. Is this normal, or should I be concerned? The batteries were purchased from YYY battery store. The store is still open & has 95% positive feedback.
@OffGridGarageAustralia2 жыл бұрын
Sorry, to hear that Leon. I would not recommend buying such high value items from AliExpress unless the seller has good reviews and reputation. It's very hard to tell if they don't provide you with exact tracking information. If you paid with Paypal, you can make a claim with them to get your money back. 2 months seems a long time... Please use the links on my website the next time for reliable sellers for such batteries: off-grid-garage.com/batteries/
